This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Gill / Pettit Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACE/1493 Message Board Post: I am looking for researchers working on the Gill/Pettit lines and any information on Gabriel Gill and Rebecca Pettit. Facts: Thomas Pettit (York Co., PA) mentions his daughter Rebecca who married Gabriel Gill. Through review of the court papers "Grever vs. Gill" we find that Rebecca (wife of Gabriel Gill) died before October 1807 in Washington Co., VA. My ancestor, Thomas Gill, was most likely born in Maryland ca: 1885-90. (via census records that for his sons Nehemiah and John) The Klechner shown in the lawsuit is most likely Adam Clackner who married Rebecca Gill (a daughter) in Baltimore MD 1798. Throughout the documents, we find this name spelled Kleckner, Klackner, and Kelchner but in all cases, he and his wife are identified as "no inhabitant" of the County and/or State. Further, in 1803, letters of Administration are issued to Adam Clackner for the Estate of Gabriel Gill in Baltimore MD. Clearly, Gabriel still had property in Maryland when he contracted to buy property in Washington Co., VA. Thomas being too young, Adam Clackner was executor in Maryland and David Carter and Rebecca Gill (the widow) were executors in VA. Time line. 1780-1784 Mary Gill is born 1785-1790 Thomas Gill is born 3/12/1789 Thomas Pettit's will identifies daughter Rebecca as wife of Gabriel Gill. 1794 Gabriel Gill, brick layer, bought land in Baltimore, MD 1796 Gabriel Gill, Brick Layer in Baltimore, MD Directory 1797 Gabriel Gill shown in Lease deal in Baltimore, MD 1798 Gabriel Gill shown on Maryland Tax List 12/23/1798 Rebecca Gill marries Adam Clackner, Baltimore, MD 1799 Gabriel Gill, Brick Layer in Baltimore, MD Directory 1799-1800 Gabriel Gill shown on Maryland Tax list 1800 Gabriel Gill, Brick Layer in Baltimore, MD Directory 7/2/1801 Mary Gill marries David Carter in Washington Co., VA 4/13/1802 Gabriel Gill buys land in Washington Co., VA from Phillip Grever 8/1803 Letters of Administration are issued to Adam Clackner et al 8/26/1806 Grever files claim to recover from the estate of Gabriel Gill 9/17/1806 Nancy Gill marries Hugh Carrick 10/1807 Rebecca Gill (the wife) shown as dead on the legal documents and "Nancy Gill now Nancy Carrick" 1/6/1814 Thomas Gill marries Grace Williams Conclusions: Gabrel Gill died 1802 or 1803 in Washington Co., VA after moving there in or around 1801 and buying property in 1802. He married Rebecca Pettit in Baltimore Co., MD or York Co., PA. She died ca: 1807 in Washington Co., VA Their children were: Mary Gill who married David Carter Thomas Gill who married Grace Williams Nancy Gill who married Hugh Carrick Rebecca Gill who married Adam Clackner Mariah Gill who married James Allen I have made some small "leaps of faith" 1. Gabriel and Rebecca Pettit. Few Gabriel Gills are found. Two of them married to Rebeccas would be unlikely. 2. Thomas being born in Maryland. Only the census records for his sons show it. 3. The data on Clackner. Spelling and location. Two Gabriels shown dying in the same period with Kleckner/Clackner involved have to be the same guy. All comment and input would be greatly appreciated.
