James HUTTON was the son of Leonard HUTTON (son of John HUTTON & Jane DICKSON) and his 1st wife, Martha McCALL (dau. of Thomas & Agnes McCALL). Leonard & Martha were married in WC VA on 31 Oct 1793 (by Rev. Charles CUMMINGS). Leonard and his 2nd wife, Nancy BAUGH, were married in WC VA on 17 Nov 1818 (by Rev. John JONES Jr.). [Source: "The Marriages of Washington County, Virginia, 1781 - 1853," (1993), by D.E. BROWN, pages 26 & 29]. John HUTTON was the son of Edward & Eleanor HUTTON of York (now Adams) County and before that, Chester Co., PA. The HATTON's/HUTTON's were from Huntington & Tyrone Townships, York (now Adams) Co., PA. John HUTTON came to WC VA in the late 1700's and settled in the upper Baker Creek (now called Hutton Creek) area. [WC Survey Book 1:360, WC DB1:76-77, VA Land Grant Book 28:164-165 & 169-170]. Leonard HUTTON owned land north of the Middle Fork of the Holston River between Cedar Creek and Little Holston Creek (now called Hall's Creek and a short portion near the mouth that is called Byar's Creek). [WC Deed Book 2:11-12]. Also see WC DB 4:388-389 for proof of James HUTTON being the son of Leonard HUTTON. Thomas & Agnes McCALL also lived in Tyrone Township. They moved to WC VA and in 1795, bought a 215 acre tract in the Forks (between the Middle Fork and the South Fork of the Holston River). [WC Deed Book 1:405]. Leonard HUTTON moved to the area east of Marion, VA before Smyth County was formed. The HUTTON's lived on Hutton Branch just east of Marion and areas east of Hutton Branch which put Leonard in Wythe County until Smyth County was formed from WC & Wythe Counties in 1832. According to Mary KEGLEY, Michael CORMANY, Sr. "settled on the headwaters of the South Fork of Reed Creek, and entered his land on a Treasury Warrant in 1782, and had 300 acres surveyed the spring of 1783 for which he received the grant on August 2, 1796." [VA Land Grant Book 35:467-468. "Early Adventures on the Western Waters," Volume V, (2004), by Mary B. KEGLEY, pages 229-233]. The Land Grant was granted to Michael KERMANY and is filed under Montgomery Co., VA even though Wythe County was formed in 1790 and the tract was no where near Montgomery County. (This is quite a common occurance). The above Michael CORMANY Sr. is most likely the ancestor of your Michael CARMONY who was born about 1820. My research follows: (Johann) Michael KARMENIE was born 26 Jul 1745 in Edenkoben, Palatinate, Germany. He was christened in Edenkoben Catholic Church. One of Michael & Catharine's sons was baptized at Hill Church (John George, baptized 15 Oct 1775, sponsors were George & Elizabeth WAMPSTER). (Johann) Michael was the son of Johanes (CARMIER/KARMINE) KARMENIE who married Maria Catharina KRAUSS on 16 Aug 1729 at the Catholic Church in Edenkoben, Palatinate, Germany. Johanes died in 1778 in what is now Lebanon Co., PA. His surviving widow was named Anna Maria. Maria Catharina's father was Johann Henrich KRAUS. Her church affiliation was Reformed (Calvinist).
