I know of HANDs that were in VA in 1700's, moved to NC, and some where back in VA in 1790, in HARDY CO. One was Jeremiah HAND, whose father was Jeremiah also. James was a common name is this family, all the way back to 1649, Easthampton, Long Island. JeremiahSr. was through one of 3 brothers that moved to CAPE MAY NJ in 1695. Jeremiah was born NJ and moved to VA ca mid-1700's. Could these 2 Hand families be connected?
