Especially articles 502 ("Latture Family Cemetery", pages 282-283), 503 ("Latture Ancestor Grave Moved to Blountville, page 283" [the grave moved was that of Harmon LATTURE, b. 1756 & d. 18 Nov 1833], and 1107 ("Mauk Family History", page 511). -------------------------------------------------- The following are about the descendants of John BOWLES, whose 237 acre Land Grant was between the Middle & South Forks of the Holston River (near Hermon LATTURE), along with the neighbors of John BOWLES and his descendants. -------------------------------------------------- >From The Personal Property Tax Lists for the Year 1787 for Washington County, Virginia", (1987), by Netti Schreiner-Yantis, page 966 (James BOWLES) and page 967 (Mary BOWLES). Both were on page 958 and both were marked "not tithable." The following are entries in the "Washington County, Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists," Vol. 1, (2004), by Jack Hockett: Mary & Jno. BOWLES were taxed on the 1788 Washington Co., VA Personal Property and Land Book. One line above Mary & Jno. was James BOWLES. (Hockett, page 135). Mary BOWELS (widow) was taxed on the 1789 Washington Co., VA Personal Property and Land Book. One line above Mary was John BOWELS and two lines above Mary was James BOWELS. (Hockett, page 156). Mary BOWLES was taxed on the 1790 Washington Co., VA Personal Property and Land Book. On the next line was Philip BARRICK. (Hockett, page 180). - - - - - - - - - - Margaret BOWLES was on the last line of page 698 of the 1810 Washington Co., VA Census. Two lines above Margaret was John COLE and 3 lines above Margaret was Philip BARICK. On the first line of page 699 was Alexander ROBINSON. Margaret (age 26-44) had two males under 10, one male (10-15), two females under 10, and one female (10-15). There was also a Thomas BOWLES (age 26-44), one female (age 26-44), and two males under 10 on page 698. On the next line below Thomas was a May BOWLES (age over 44) and one male (age 10-15). - - - - - - - - - - >From "Southwest Virginia Tax Assessments, 1815, Grayson, Lee, Scott, Russell, Washington, & Wythe Counties, 1991, by Mary B. Kegley: BOWLES, Margaret, one farm in the Forks of Holston [between the Middle and South Forks of the Holston River] on the Blue Spring Road, joining William EDMONDSON, and John COLE, 118 & 1/2 acres, having thereon four log "cabbins," valued at $600. (Page 95). [This would be one-half of John BOWLES' 237 acre tract]. BOWLES, Thomas, one farm in the Forks of Holston, joining Margaret BOWLES and John COLE, 118 & 1/2 acres having a log "cabbin," and log barn, valued at $600. (Page 96). [This would be the other one-half of John BOWLES' 237 acre tract]. COLE, John, one farm on both sides of the South Fork of the Holston River and on the Blue Spring Road, joining the land of Philip BARACK, Margaret BOWLES, and Joseph COLE, 580 acres having thereon one log dwelling, one log barn, four small "cabbins," and one saw mill, and iron works building, valued at $2,900. Kegley: EDMONDSON, William, one farm in the Forks of Holston [between the Middle and South Forks of the Holston River] , joining Alexander ROBINSON, John MOORE, and Margaret BOWLES, containing 240 acres having thereon one log dwelling house, one log barn, and four log "cabbins," valued at $1400. (Page 1). MOOR [MOORE], John, son of William of Kentucky, one farm in the Forks of Holston, joining William EDMONDSON, Alexander ROBINSON, and George ALLEN, 359 acres having thereon 2 log "cabbins," and 1 old log barn, valued at $1800. ROBINSON, Alexander, one farm in the Forks of Holston, joining William EDMONDSON and Samuel FULTON, on the Blue Spring Road, with a "cabbin" dwelling house, log barn and two "cabbin," containing 108 acres, valued at $675. VA State Warrant #10941 ... on a branch of the South Fork of the Holston River ... Beginning corner to Adam MONROWIE [MORROW] ... corner to John BOWLES land ... on Robert REAGHS survey ... May 5, 1784. Page 399 - Hermon LATTURE- - 238 acres ... on both sides of Mill Creek, on the south side of the South Fork of the Holstein [Holston] River ... treasury warrant # 8184 ... on the south side of a line of Joseph COLE's lower survey ... corner to Esther RAFFARTY's [RAFFERTY's] land ... with David PHILIPS line ... with John JONES line ... in a valley ... on a road ... crossing Mill Creek ... June 16, 1792. - - - - - - - - - - Washington County, VA Deeds: 24 Jun 1814 -- Thomas BOWLES, State of TN to Wm. EDMISTON (EDMONDSON) of WC VA, One equal half of a parcel on the waters of the South Fork of the Holston River on both sides of said river, formerly owned by James BOWLES which land was conveyed or descended from his father and decreed from James BOWLES to Thomas BOWLES and the heirs of John BOWLES by decree of County court of Washington supposed to contain between 237 and 337 acres on which Peggy [Margaret] BOWLES and Wm. HOUSTON now lives -- one equal half of all that tract or parcel of land. [This deed bordered a 792 foot boundary line on the north side of John JONES 200 acre Land Grant dated 20 Aug 1801. EDMONDSON -- said Wm. EDMONDSON owning 1/2 of said survey (that Wm. bought from Thomas BOWLES), and John BOLES junior] and heir to John BOLES senior, deceased, which John BOLES junior held 1/2 of land and Margaret BOLES, widow & relict of John BOLES junior, deceased and she claimed the 1/3 part of said John BOLES junior's, deceased, share. Margaret BOLES being an heir of John BOLES junior sells 1/2 of 1/2 of said survey, she (Margaret) being a daughter of John BOLES junior, deceased. Said 1/2 lying on the north side of said survey, that 1/2 being undivided as yet, which said 1/4th in the north side which said John EDMONDSON is to have. And heirs of said John BOLES junior, deceased did own the other part and part of said heirs own some shares in said 1/2 yet and John EDMONDSON now owns other shares in said 1/2 being 5 shares in said part and said Margaret BOLES being an heir of said John BOLES junior, deceased, one share of said half. . [Source: "Washington County, Virginia Deed Book 11, 1831-1834," (2006), by Jack HOCKETT, page 53 (WC Deed Book 11:173-174)]. -------------------------------------------------- There were two other Washington County, VA Land Grants for another John BOWLES that were located south east of Abingdon on the north side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River on or near what is now U.S. Route 58: One was dated 07 May 1787 for 400 acres on the waters of the Middle Fork of the Holston River adjoining Samuel HENRY's land (VA Land Office Land Grant Book 7:548-550). The other was dated 02 Nov 1793 for 157 acres adjoining the land James CRAIG formerly lived on and on the south side of said land, William KENNADY [KENNEDY] on the south east side, and Samuel HENRY on the west (VA Land Office Land Grant Book 31:30-31). The above two Land Grants totaled 557 acres and the three WC deeds listed below also totaled 557 acres. 19 Aug 1794 -- James BOLES of Knox County, Territory South of the Ohio to David CARSON. Power of Attorney. Witnessed by Wm. CARSON and Wm. HUTCHISON. [WC Deed Book 1:349]. 19 Aug 1794 -- David CARSON, attorney in fact for James BOLES of Knox County, Territory South of the Ohio, to James SNODGRASS. 105 pounds. 207 acres on the north side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River. [WC Deed Book 1:350]. 19 Aug 1794 -- David CARSON, attorney in fact for James BOLES to Archibald McCULLOUGH. Consideration not stated. 220 acres more or less on the north side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River. [WC Deed Book 1:351]. 19 Aug 1794 -- David CARSON, attorney in fact for James BOLES to Archibald McGINNIS. 40 pounds. 130 acres on the north side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River.
