As in the 1820 and 1840 census of Washington County, the 1830 census was in order alphabetically, but only by the first letter of a surname. Thus the five persons above may have lived near each other as the order of the surnames listed under "K" (or any other letter) were probably taken off the enumeration lists for the original census which were in dwelling to dwelling, farm to farm order, etc. There were no other KINDER's in the 1830 WC VA census and none in the 1840 WC VA census. Jacob, Jesse and John KINDER were on the three lines immediately following George KILLINGER on page 216 of the 1820 WC VA census. - - - - - - - - - From "Supplement to Southwest Virginia Tax Assessments, 1815," (1992), by Mary B. Kegley (which included Washington & Wythe Counties): Page 12 - "Jacob KINDER, tract on Walkers Creek, a branch of the Middle Fork of the Holston [River] joining Jacob WILLIAMS, Henry JAYNES(?), and John GOODMAN, 200 acres, having thereon a log "cabbin," barn and stable, valued at $800. [Mary's note:], (Walkers Creek is a branch of the New River, not the Holston)." Page 16 - "George MERSER, one tract with a small farm and grist mill and some log "cabbins," joining John GOODMAN, Thomas SNIDER and KINDER, 47 acres, valued at $150." Page 31 - "Jacob WILLIAMS, one tract on the waters of the Middle Fork of Holston [River], and joining the Mountain Survey, Jacob KINDER, Adam FOX, and Jacob BLESSING, containing 190 acres, having thereon a log "cabbin," and other out log houses, valued at $950." From the surnames mentioned above, it looks like Jacob KINDER may have been living in Smyth County, which was formed from Wythe County in 1832. There were KINDER's in the 1840 census of Smyth County on page 397 and on pages 168A, 194A and 194B of the 1850 census.
