Author: yelnam Surnames: ARNOLD Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.washington/4172.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Great Grandmother Sallie Arnold. The ONLY thing I have about her is the 1900 census (Wythe Co. married) where she lists her birthday as October 1870, Virginia. Her first son's family has a verbal history that she was from Abbindon. Two of her sons marriage records record that her name is Sallie Arnold. That is all I have. She died after the 1900 census and as you know the 1890 census does not exist. I estimate her marriage date to be about 1889. I have no idea where. I have been unable to find it in Wythe Co. VA. where she was living for the 1900 census. I notice that there are two Arnolds in Washington Co. Virginia. One I have accounted for Susannah A. Arnold born Oct. 12, 1869, married Thomas Franklin Hamm, s/o Enoch J. and Martha Hamm. Susannah died Oct 22, 1956 interred Mountain View Cemetery, Chilhowie Va. But there is another Sarah Arnold born around the same time that I can not find any information on. I find her in Washington Co. in the 1880 census. Do you know anything about her? Do you know anything about any other female Arnold that could be her? Thank you for your time and trouble. We have the info you have related - and have not been able to document any of it yet.... except the reference to Alexander and the Amicable Society. My husband and I actually went to the Historical Library in Richmond, and there were several files of info on this. Enough to make it clear that this is not our Alexander - the death date was completely incompatible with what we know - As far as we know now, Alexander and Ann had just the 2 children, Charles Lewis, and Elizabeth - so the reference to Alexander having 4 daughters might mean that this is not our Alexander. It gets very confusing - I'm beginning to think that the name Alexander Montgomery is the Scottish equivalent to John Smith!!! But it is nice to know there is someone else hunting for him - one day we will track him down for sure! If there are particular things you need info wise in Charles Lewis's line, I and another cousin have done quite a bit of research on that, so I might be able to help. I live in Mason County, but Menard County IL, where all these Montgomerys wound up settling, is just 6 miles from my house, and I drive through there all the time. The town of Greenview is where many of them lived, and Charles actually donated a great deal of the property that the town is built on. Let me know if I can help with specific people, dates, etc... besides Alexander.... kathy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have some clues about Alexander Montgomery - hopefully some will lead to some solid proof. I found out some things about Alex. M. from "Past and Present of Menard County, IL - 1905." I believe it is one of those books common to the time where people pay money and have their biography printed. If so, it would be very interesting to know what a person chooses to tell about himself and his ancestors. The article is about Alexander Montgomery, born 1833 in Menard Co. "He is a son of Charles L. and Eliza (Bracken) Montgomery, the former a native of Virginia and the latter of Kentucky. His father arrived in Menard county, IL in 1820, when a young boy ..." I had assumed that Charles had arrived with his father, but apparently it was with his step-father James Meadows. Later it says that Alex. M.(1833) was a Mason, and goes on to say "His paternal grandfather {does not state his name} was also a Mason, having become a member of the order at Covent Garden, London, England, from which the was demitted April 21, 1771, upon his emigration to the new world. Crossing the Atlantic to Virginia, he was made grand master of the grand lodge of that state October 28, 1789." I spoke to the historian at the grand lodge, which is in Richmond. She said they have very little info on Alexander. He became grand treasurer of the lodge in 1785. He withdrew from the lodge June 1791. She said that this grand lodge is made up of members of lodges from all around the state, and that A.M. was from Washington County. She said their records state that he was mayor of Richmond, but she believes that is not true. He was apparently a councilman. She said he was present for the laying of the cornerstone of the Capitol of Richmond in 1785. When I asked about his family, she said their records show that he had 4 daughters. She said he was in the Rev. War., Capt. Whit's Regiment in defense of the western frontier of VA, under Gen. George Clark. She said he was a member (maybe V.P.?)of the Amicable Society of Richmond, which aided strangers and wayfarers in distress. I believe she said that a lot of the info came from Montgomery family data which they acquired in 1989. Please let me know what you think, and if any of this info confirms or conflicts with what you already know. BTW, what do you have for a birthdate?
