    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: catmiller2 Surnames: Catron, Lloyd, Collins Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.washington/4178.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am a descendant of Christopher Catron/Katron/Ketring and Mary O'Neal. They married 1812 in Wash Co. VA and owned property in the same area. Their house was located at the "Delmar crossing", ie intersection of 711/712, 711 being the road going through Alvarado and 712 (at that point) being the Bluff Hollow Road. Route 713 (now Alex Road) "Y's" off Bluff Hollow Road at Cedar Bluff Methodist Church. Christopher and Mary's daughter, Elizabeth, married Wm. H. Lloyd and their oldest daughter was Letitia. In 1862, Letitia married Jefferson Collins, son of John F. Collins and Catherine Newman. John F. Collins was the son of Patrick Collins. Some years after Elizabeth Catron Lloyd's death (c. 1861)and the death of her husband (c. 1863) her property, which came to her through the estate of her father, Christopher Catron/Katron/Ketring, was divided among her 3 children. Letitia Lloyd Collins petitioned the court to allow her to have the portion of her mother's property which bordered the Collins property, so she and her husband, Jefferson, would hold deed to a larger tract of land. (I could only assume that Jefferson had "laid claim" to the portion of his father's land which bordered the Catron-Lloyd land.) A search of Chancery Court records revealed a hand-drawn map of Elizabeth Catron Lloyd's land and detailed the division of same between her three children. The land is located on Bluff Hollow Road; what was Elizabeth Catron Lloyd's home is now owned by Thomas Slavic --- a large farm house with limestone chimneys which sits below the road on the east side. According to the map, the land Letitia Collins was given lay on out Bluff Hollow Road past the (now) Slavic home. The land on which the present-day Depew home now sits was also a part of this same (Catron-Lloyd) tract. I hope this piece of information is of help to someone. By the way, it would appear, from everything I have been able to understand, that "Bluff Bridge" was the bridge (or river crossing) nearest the settlement of Alvarado, that is, lying west of Alvarado, where the present day road (Rte 710) crosses the South Fork of the Holston River. There is a rock bluff there, and a post office was likely to have been located nearby, to serve that (Alvarado) area. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RobertFord14 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.washington/4178.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The James COLLINS (a farmer, age 46) and Mary COLLINS (age 93) in dwelling # 988 of the 1850 census of Washington County is a mystery in that they are enumerated between Col. William BYARS and Henry MOCK. There is no other James COLLINS in the 1850 census of WC. On 05 Oct 1798, Patrick COLLINS bought 92 acres in Washington County from William & Elizabeth BRADSHAW. This 92 acre tract was located on the north side of the South Fork of the Holston River east or southeast of Alvarado. Alvarado being about one-half mile slightly southeast of the mouth of the Middle Fork of the Holston River where it empties into the South Fork of the Holston River. See: http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.washington/1608.1.1.1.1.1.2.2/mb.ashx for additional info on Patrick COLLINS. (Note: the URL -- http://www.topozone.com/map -- mentioned in the above website no longer works as TopoZone is now merged into a pay site). In the 1860 census of Washington County , is a James COLLINS (a farmer, age 55, dwelling # 903). This James COLLINS is also listed in the Schedule 4 "Productions of Agriculture" of the 1860 census of Washington County (Post Office "Bluff Bridge"). On page 17, line 10 of the Agriculture census, James COLLINS is shown as having 50 improved acres and an additional 42 acres of unimproved land, thus a total of 92 acres. If the James COLLINS that was a farmer in the 1850 census of WC was also listed in the 1850 Agricultural census schedule, his acreage (improved & unimproved) would also be included. Thus if it was 92 acres, mystery solved. For more on Patrick COLLINS, see: http://www.michaelh53.com/genealogy/collins/patrickcollins.htm [On the other hand there was a Charles COLLINS associated with Col. Wm. BYARS and both were part of the early history of Emory & Henry College. Collins House is the oldest college building still on its original foundation. Built in 1845 as a home for Emory & Henry's first president, Charles COLLINS (1838-52), the house carries his name. Col. BYARS owned various properties in Washington County including his residence for a time called Brook Hall]. Bob Ford Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [VAWASHIN] Name Game???
    2. Shiloh and Joy Stone
    3. Ok, I have found some interesting info the last couple of weeks. I called a woman in Bristol, she goes by Cricket(kinda cute, huh?) and I had her tell me about my grandmother and the family. She was my grandmothers sister in law when my grandmother was married the first time. Anyways she told me that my great great grandparents were divorced or at least separated. She said they hadn't lived together for years before either of them died. So I called to see if there was a divorce record but there wasn't. She couldn't find a will in Patrick Henry Lewis' name but did a reverse search for his wife Martha and found one. The name was Mathias Lewis and it had that he left money to his ESTRANGED wife Martha and I knew it was the right one because Ethel Vickers was listed as a child heir. She was my great grandmother. So anyways, I found this guy on a census as a child named Ison Lewis and then he was known as Patton H Lewis and Patrick Henry Lewis and now Mathias! Is it common for people in this area to change their names? My grandmother(Patrick's granddaughter) was born as Charma Mae Vickers and she changed it herself to Charmie Jo. She also went by CJ and Jo. I was just wondering if this is common?Joy _________________________________________________________________ Search that pays you back!
