Author: catmiller2 Surnames: Hand, Edmondson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.washington/412.2.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, haven't heard from you in a while. No, I'm sorry, I don't know when he arrived, or from where. Louise Fortune Hall (the town historian for Damascus) wrote in one of her books that he came to VA from NY or NJ, but where she got that info, I do not know. I always thought their nationality was probably German, but a cousin swears he was always told they were Irish. There is still a heavy concentration of "HAND" families in the Cape May Courthouse area of New Jersey, and I suspect that may be where they (our branch of the HAND family) originally settled before drifting SW to Washington Co, VA. There is a branch of that family (Cape May Courthouse, NJ Hands) that somewhat fits our family, but I don't know of any documents that definitively tie our Hand family to the one in NJ. The only clue I have found is in the census for Wash Co, VA for 1860 where Mary Han, age 83, born NJ lives in the household of James and Sallie Han, both age 65. They lived in Mocks Mill, which was later named Damascus. Because we know "old" James Hand died before Oct 1834 (when his will was filed), and because we know by his will that his wife was named Sarah/Sally, we know this Mary Han/Hand is not the wife of "old" James, therefore not the mother of the James ("son" James) with whom she appears in the 1860 census. I believe she is the aunt of this 65 yr old James, as I believe she is the unmarried sister of "old" James. And yes, she could be the widowed sister-in-law of "Old" James -- there are a number of possible scenarios. The problem is, I have NEVER been able to find any documentation in Washington Co, VA which would explain anything more about the older generation of the Hand family than what I've given here. The only hope I have is to someday get to NJ to research documents there. Perhaps there is a will or deed which names "my son (or brother) James who went to VA and was never heard from." !! Wouldn't it be great to find something like that !! I have tried to determine when "old" James first came to Washington County, and the best clue I have found is in the book, "Wash Co, VA Personal Property Tax lists, 1782-1786 and 1788-1790," by Thomas Jack Hockett. I first found him in the 1786 list. He is shown to have 1 white tithable, no slaves over 16, no slaves under 16, 1 horse and 1 head of cattle. The only Han/Hann/Hand listing in Mary Kegley's book, "Southwest VA Tax assessments 1815" is a David Han, and I don't know who he is or how he connects. In later years there was a William David Hand (sometimes referred to as David William Hand), so it is possible the handwriting was so bad that Ms. Kegley simply thought the name was David (in the 1815 listing). Who knows?!! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [VAWASHIN] Latture Family
    2. Van Latture
    3. To Bob Ford: Please contact me privately at Latture@mac.com To Theresa Griffiths: Harmon Latture died in Sullivan County, TN on 18 Nov 1833. He and Agnes left Washington County about 30 years earlier. See Bob's notation on the sale of his land in Washington County from his earlier message. Note on Harmon's land in Washington County: A cousin and I found this land and walked (climbed?) it one summer. The part near the river (South Fork of the Holston) is very hilly. I found a TVA map with a cemetery marked on it very near this location. I found a farmer in his field and asked if I could see the cemetery. He said, "What cemetery?" There were probably 20 to 30 graves in a dense thicket of trees but all the remaining tombstones were not readable. They were made of limestone and had flaked off in sheets so there was absolutely nothing there to read. I suspect Hermon's first wife (unknown) was buried there. Bob you did an excellent job of laying out all the information on Hermon and the Bowles family. Thank you. Van

It's a hardback in good condition. I couldn't find any others on ebay. I have descendants from the early VA, some who were thought to be tri-racial and the description indicates it contains some of this type of history as well. I mean how do you thank someone who has gone so much out of there way to help. I know it took you a long time to type all that out. Your kindness has really touched me and is so much appreciated more than you know. I've had help through the years with tid bits, clues, or names, but nobody has ever helped me like that. So again Thank You so much and many blessings in return back to you! Some did give me a link for Sullivan Co, TN. and I think there was/is a book about it on the website. ( Not sure ) I've been looking around so much I can't remember. But I will go back to Sullivan Co,TN. website and look again and if they have that book I will get it. The part where you show... ("Latture Ancestor Grave Moved to Blountville, page 283" [the grave moved was that of Harmon Latture, b. 1756 & d. 18 Nov 1833) Going by that if I understand right he died in Washington Co, Va. and then was moved to Blountville, Tn. And all that BOLES / BOWLES info...If I understand all that right it looks like maybe John mightbe the Father of Agnes who was married to Harmon LATTURE. I was told all early Marriages and Wills were lost from the Civil War in Sullivan Co, Tn. I know Harmon was in Lancaster Co, Pa. and a lady told me abt. 6 years ago she was told they were also in Cumberland Co, Pa. before Va. and Tn. Just so hard in the early years. Maybe one day when more people start searching lines the pieces will come together. Thanks for all your help you've given me your wonderful! Author: RobertFord14 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.washington/4181.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hermon LATTURE's 238 acre Land Grant was dated 27 July 1795. Location: Washington County (not Scott County). Description: 238 acres on both sides of Mill Creek on the south side of the South Fork of the Holstein River adjoining Esther RAFFERTY, David PHILIPS & John JONES. Source: VA Land Office Grant Book 33:399-400. There were various creeks named "Mill Creek" in Washington County. The above Mill Creek is located on the south side of the South Fork of the Holston River near the Smyth County line. The northern most corner of LATTURE's tract was near the bank of the South Fork of the Holston River. Hermon LATTURE's neighbors were: Esther RAFFERTY on the east (1785 Land Grant for 400 acres), David PHILLIPS on the east below Esther RAFFERTY (1786 Land Grant for 100 acres), John JONES on the southwest (1786 Land Grant for 300 acres). John JONES on the west (1801 Land Grant for 200 acres), Adam SARBROUGH [also SURBER] on the north (1801 Land Grant for 160 acres). Also John BOWLES had a 1785 Land Grant for 237 acres that was on the north side of the South Fork of the Holston River with boundary lines on the river and BOWLES tract was near Adam SARBROUGH's/SURBER's 160 acre tract. For John BOWLES tract see VA Land Office Grant Book Q:377-379. On 01 Mar 1798, Hermon LATTURE & Agnes his wife sold 102 acres on Mill Creek, a branch of the South Fork of the Holston River to Jonathan PHILLIPS. Adjacent Esther RAFFERTY, David PHILLIPS & John JONES. Source: WC Deed Book 2:101-102. The 102 acre tract was the southern part of LATTURE's 238 acre Land Grant tract. On 07 May 1804, Hermon LATTURE/LATTUER of Tennessee sold 113 acres of his 238 acre tract which was located on both sides of Mill Creek to Sabeus MAIN. By 1792 he shows as Grantee Hermon LATTURE of 238 acres on both sides Mill Creek in Scott County, Virginia. If there is any early info books out there and someone owns one can you please see if there is a surname close to any of these spellings. Harmon/Herman LATTURE is said to have been married twice 1st wife unknown and 2nd wife as Agnes BOWLES. The BOWLES might also be many spellings also! Your Mary remains a mystery. Would you mind telling me your proof of her marriage to McVey? Some have connected her to a Goff and some other lines. I would really like to clear this up.
