Author: sturkey1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.washington/4191.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you so much. I am confident that this is the man. When Martin Gary's Cavalry Brigade was paroled at Appomattox, the acting brigade surgeon was listed as "H. Barr." Civil War historian Robert R. Krick believes that "H. Barr" is in fact William F. Barr. There is circumstantial evidence to support this. Gary's brigade was composed of two South Carolian cavalry regiments, the 7th S. C. Cavalry and Gary's old unit, the Hampton Legion Mounted Infantry; a small contingent from the 7th Georgia Cavalry, and two Virginia units, COL William Todd Robins' 24th Virginia Cavalry, and Captain James Hankins' Surry Light Artillery (which was not at the surrender, having got out after the fight at Appomattox Station on the evening of the 8th). Unlike many Civil War officers, Gary, to his great good credit, was meticulous in placing men from states other than his own on his staff. My personal belief is that it greatly strengthened the team concept of the brigade. One other piece of circumstatial evidence is that Gary did show a preference for appointing Methodists to positions around him. His father had moved to the Up-State village of Cokesbury, where there was a thriving Methodist academy, and Gary and all of his brothers attended. Gary himself was one of the most profane men in the Army of Northern Virginia, and I suspect not very devout personally, but he did show a preference for Methodists in many of his appointments. I wonder if Barr had any connection to the Cokesbury Methodist School. It was attended by people from over the South. At Appomattox, when told of the impending surrender, Gary told the Federal who brought the news that "We are South Carolinians, and do not surrender." True to his word, Gary and a small party of friends, including Ham Chamberlayne, a Virginia, cut their way out of the Federal lines and made their way to Greensboro, where they met up with Jefferson Davis. Gary and about 150-200 of his men formed a small part of Davis' escort to Charlotte, and Gary accompanied the President across northern South Carolina. Davis and several prominent members of his party actually spent the night in the home of Gary's mother at Cokesbury, where Gary left the entourage. Do you know where Dr. Barr was educated? Again, thank you so much. Lee Sturkey Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am looking for records or other information concerning my ancestor Isaac Farris (b. 1788, location unk./d. 1857, Switzerland Co., IN). His first son, William Lee Farris, was born 3/19/1818 in Washington Co., VA. His wife has traditionally been though to have been a Sarah Thompson, but this may be inaccurate. I suspect that my Isaac was listed in the 1810 tax records for neighboring Russell Co. as Isac Faris, but appears in no other known records in that county. I do not have access to the 1810 or 1820 census records for Washington Co., so if anyone does and could see if there's a ready match, I'd appreciate it. I do, however, find a cemetery in the NW edge of Wash Co (where it borders Scott County, in the upper corner) named , "Old Edmond Barker Cemetery". The only stone recorded for that cemetery is that of Eliza G. Barker, b. 7 Jul 1847 and d. 30 Sep 1864. The cemetery was canvassed in April, 1963, so that stone may no longer be standing and/or legible. 1. Re: [VAWASHIN] Marriage information John PRESTON (b.abt 1834)
    2. Heather wanted to know what military Thomas M. PRESTON, as Colonel, was in such as the CSA or the Militia. The reference to Thomas as being a Colonel was taken from the "Holston Pastfinder," Volume 28, page 3 in an article on Thomas' son also named Thomas M.: "Thomas M. PRESTON. Thomas M., son of Colonel Thomas M. PRESTON, was born in Washington Co., ..." This article was taken from "Virginia and Virginians, 1888 (Original by Prof. Virgil A. Lewis; Revised by Dr. R. A. Brock, 1888)" (The article was from page 747 of the "Virginia and Virginians"). But my wife and I can find no other reference to Thomas M. PRESTON Sr. being a Colonel (or even an officer). Some of the information given the "Virginia and Virginians" has been incorrect. I checked in "The Militia of Washington County, Virginia - Index of Militia Men, 1798-1835," (1979), by Gerald H. CLARK, and the only reference was to a Thomas PRESTON in the 105th Regiment in 1835 in the "Index of Militia Men, 1798 - 1835," and nothing in the "Index of Militia Officers" section. So if Thomas M. was a Colonel, I would want to see proof before calling him one again. Thomas M. PRESTON's Bible record can be found at the "Historical Society of Washington County" or at the Library of Virginia Website at: http://ajax.lva.lib.va.us/F/UDEGRIV7Q59D6LC1FHAN9HEAB5LA6F86PQ88RAC1ITNHHXEC1V -21047?func=full-set-set&set_number=005031&set_entry=000002&format=999 The Bible record consists of a copy of the title page and three pages of Bible entries (1) Thomas' two marriages, (2) Births, (3) Deaths. On page 13, line 6 of the 1860 "Productions of Agriculture" Census (Schedule 4) of WC, Thomas M. PRESTON had 725 acres of which 400 acres was improved and 325 acres were unimproved. Post Office was Lodi. The cash value of the farm was $18,125.00 Value of Farming Implements & Machinery was $200.00. His livestock included (13 horses, 11 milch cows, 2 working oxen, 53 other cattle, 53 sheep, 50 swine, all worth $2,573.00); Produce included (Bushels: wheat 290, Indian corn 800, Oats 300, Irish potatoes 80); (Pounds included: wool 200, butter 500); 24 tons of hay; and 10 gallons of molasses. Value of Homemade Manufactures $50.00; Value of Animals Slaughtered $500.00. Thomas M. PRESTON had 9 slaves (and two cabins) ages 40M, 25F, 22F, 8M, 7F, 5F, 5M, 1F, 1M. (1860 Census Schedule 2, page 13). On 29 Jan 1853, Thomas M. PRESTON sold one male slave named "Kiul" (hard to read the writing) to James ORR for $800.00.
