Looking for information pertaining to my great grandfather, Joseph DECKARD (1853 - 1897), married to Sarah Ann RUST (1856 - 1923). Joseph was a tenant farmer in Washington County and said to have a temper. He was allegedly murdered by Sarah in January 1897. (She hit him in the head with an ax while he slept.) I have been unable to locate any info on Joseph other than one brother was James. His parents were John and Jane DECKARD. I have a partially transcribed newspaper article on the murder from the Bristol Courier but have been unable to locate any court records, however, one relative has read them at the courthouse. Can anyone shed some light? I have lots of info on the RUST side. Thanks, Sherry
I found some information on James RAMSEY in the Revolutionary War Pension Applications and posted it on www.genforum.com/ramsey . It includes a letter written to James Jr. from his nephew J.A. James lived in York District, SC after the war but some people may be related as some of his kids went to GA, others TN, and more to IL. Here is the link to the post with the letter and an abstract of the penson file: http://genforum.genealogy.com/ramsey/messages/2735.html If nothing else, it is starts off as a fairly humorous letter (which is the reason I transcribed it) but has good family data in it. Best of wishes, Billy Markland
Just in case anyone besides myself did not realize it, the UVA Digital Library has the majority of the Wood-Boye county maps of VA posted at: http://image.vtls.com/BPW/indexes/711-712.html Only one thing missing from this is the ability to rotate the map to a North-South perspective for a couple of counties but beyond a slightly stiff neck it is workable. Best of wishes, Billy

Posted on: Washington Co. Va Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Va/Washington/10210 Surname: Fortner, Moore, Barker, Burke, Chiles, Pegram, Wheatley ------------------------- I visited yesterday the Fortner Cemetary which is located between Lebanon and Abingdon, near Hansonville. The address is listed as Rt 3 Lebanon. One grave in particular I was looking for was Lucy Fortner Moore - which I found. Unfortunately we could not read the inscription on the headstone. It looked to be some sort of poem or verse. I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not this cemetary had been researched and the tombstones transcribed. I know sometimes local historical groups do this. I would love to have this information for my family tree. Lucy Fortner Moore was the wife of William Franklin Moore and she died in 1903 after contracting pneumonia after taking her daughters to her mother's house to save them from drowning in a flood. THe cemetary is still located on the Fortner Family property. Thanks for any help you could give me.
