At my site, is a transcript of an Officer's Proceedings taken 2/6/1782. It provides a snapshot of the current officers of the NC Continental Line at that time. I also, for the eastern North Carolinians amongst us, added a list of Caswell County, NC Revolutionary volunteers estimated date 1/26/1779. The Link is Markland & Allied Families ( http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/). Click on the Transcripts link, then the History link to bring up the Table of Contents. It is ordered by date. I am currently working on transcribing the Indexed list of the NC Continental soldiers compiled by Secretary of State Hill's office from the original rolls. So far, I have completed the D surnames for all 10 regiments. Hope this helps someone, Billy
Hello friends! I am researching all of the HUTTON families in the Washington and Smyth County area. Most if not all, of these families descend from John and James HATTON who settled in Washington County in the 1780s. By about 1800, the name was called HUTTON. I would love to hear from anyone else interested in the HUTTON name! Warm wishes, Diane Costello

Hi List, I am going to Washington Co. in June. A friend of mine told me that sometimes they have car races there and that when they have them it is hard to find a place to stay. Does anyone know if there will be one there from June 16 - June 29? Does anyone have any know of a good place to stay? I will not spend a lot of time there in the room, I will be out seeing what I can find. So as long as it is clean. Thanks, Bev

Regarding the use of Jr. as an addition to a name - more recently it has been as you say. It means "son of someone of the same name." However, a little farther back, it was merely used to designate the younger of two people who had the same name, living in the same area. Before the days of social security numbers and drivers licenses and other forms of ID, they had to have some way to differentiate people legally, and this seemed to work for them. It sure confuses us though! I have someone in my line who called himself James A Bailey Jr. when he lived in Washington county (he dropped that when he moved out of the area), but I just keep finding more and more reasons to believe his father was most definitely NOT James A. Bailey, certainly not the James A. Bailey who was calling himself "Sr." Lisa in Wisc. > >Surname: ROBINSON, HOPKINS >------------------------- > >Thanks for your response, Anne. My Robinson family might be >related to the family that you mention; however, my James >Robinson's name was James Robinson, JR so I am assuming that >his father's name was also James. >

Posted on: Washington Co. Va Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Va/Washington/10314 Surname: Sutton ------------------------- Mary: I am the eldest of the three grandsons of William Aston Sutton, fifth child of Mary E. and John F. Sutton. At the time of the 1870 census in Washington Co. VA, my grandfather at 7 months of age, was the youngest of the children at the time. John F. went on to father three more children. My grandfather and his next older brother, Edward C. Sutton settled in Gorman, Texas during the oil boom of 1917, opened a dry goods store named Sutton Brothers, with brother John (who soon sold out and returned to Abingdon, VA). Ed and wife, Martha Neal Sutton, had one son, who resides in Austin, Texas. My grandfather and wife, Mattie O'Chine Sutton, had one son as well, John Edward Sutton, born in Bisbee, Arizona July 24, 1916. He died December 16, 1999. Pls contact me and I can provide you with some additional details of our part of the family. I would like to learn more about Will's ancestors. In the aforementioned census, a John Sutton, 85, retired farmer is listed. I assume he was John F.'s father, but that is as far back as I have been able to trace the Sutton side of the family.
