    1. [VAWASHIN] Nancy Pemberton
    2. Hello All I was in Bristol this past weekend doing some research. Well, I needed some scratch paper. Found some and wrote down info I needed. When I got home I found on other side of paper was A copy of the last will of Nancy Pemberton. Wife of William Pemberton. So if anyone out there has A connection to this family, I will be glad to send it to them. Please email me at wolf1901@aol.com. I will be glad to send it out. Mac McNutt PS: I guess I should have said I was at the Abingdon Court House in Washington County.

    3. I'm so sorry to report that I received what appeared to be a reply from your e-mail address with message saying take look at the attachment (which I expected to be in response to message I sent Washington Co, VA rootsweb List earlier toay) but unfortunately when I opened the attachment I was advised that a Virus was detected by my computer's Norton Anti-Virus protection. I hope this does not indicate that either Washington Co., VA List or your computer has been infected by some Virus that is passing it along to others!!! 3. Posted on: Washington Co. Va Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Va/Washington/10378 Surname: Roberts, Ashby ------------------------- Karen: My da-in-law descends from Simon P Roberts and his wife Mahala through the son Thomas Roberts who m Ann Eliza Bailie Peterson. I went throught the same search you are doing on Mahala's parents - the printed version of the 1850 Washington Co. census and a book I have seen on Lane descendants give Mahala's parents as Thomas and Jane Worley. If you have access to the microfilm of the Washington Co. 1850 census, check it out and you can see that the name is not Worley at all. There is a Worley on the same page and it does not look the same. I read it as Thomas Ashby age 40, Jane age 38 then Simon Roberts and Mahala. Then it goes back to Ann Ashby 12, Elizabeth Ashby 7, Litz??4, and Eliza age 2. It is possible that the name is Ashley but I lean towards the Ashby. I believe that Thomas's parents were Cutburd Ashby and Nancy Land d/o Nancy Land who m Jan 2, 1805 in Halifax Co. VA. Wit were a Joseph Mathis and John W. Ashby. There were other Ashbys in Hal. Co. also. There was a Cuddy Ashby in Stokes Co. 1810, Cudbutt Ashby in Stokes Co. NC 1820 and a Cuthbert in 1830 and in 1840 Russell Co. VA there was a Thomas Ashby with several young females in household and next door to him was Cuddy Ashby. I cannot seem to find that 1840 record at the moment. Now, in 1850 Wash. Co. VA Fam #1918 was a James Ashby age 30 and living with him was Nancy Ashby age 64 and Cud Ashby age 65 b Va. Fam # 1927 was Samuel Ashby also 30 Mary 25 and a da Jane. Thomas and Jane Ashby were #1445 with Simon Roberts and Mahala and the other Ashby girls. The Ashbys of VA had a lot of Thomas and I have not place Cuthbert as yet but have not worked on this in over a year. Simon P. Roberts is listed by several people as a son of Richard Roberts of Washington Co. and his wife Elizabeth Doty b NC. The Doty/Doughty line goes back to the Mayflower but I have not found Elizabeth's parents either to make that connection. It will be a while before I can get back to researching these lines as I am knee deep in other lines at present but let me know what you think. Joan in TN

    1. [VAWASHIN] Old Glade Stagecoach Inn/Basil Talbert
    2. Hi list, I'm the owner of the Old Glade Stagecoach Inn in Glade Spring VA built in 1780 by Basil Talbert. I'm looking for any information, documents etc about the Inn and also about Basil Talbert and wonder if any list members might have such information or know where I could get any information. I've found some useful information at the Washington County Court House and Historical Society about Talbert (will, land surveys, etc) but would like to see if there's anything else out there. Thanks, George

    1. Re: [VAWASHIN] WHITES MILL
    2. Diana Powell
    3. Tammy, I am familiar with the history of White's Mill and periperally with your McCulloch family. The land that White's Mill stands on was originally settled in 1773 by William Moffett and Mary Gardner Moffett who came down into the Valley from Augusta Co. William died at Pt. Pleasant in 1774 and Mary took her 3 small children and returned north for a few years. How ever they had returned by 1785 at which time William's oldest son John received a patent to the land. Then in Jan. of 1796 John sold the same 330 acres to his younger brother Thomas who had married a few weeks earlier to a Mary Brown. In 1810 Thomas and Mary moved to Indiana and sold the land to Valentine Baugh. They in turn sold it to Thomas Jameson (sp?) in 1814. And Thomas and Rachel Jameson sold it in 1830 to John and Nancy Newhouse who in 1838 sold it to James White. Rachel Jameson was originally Rachel McCullock and hence the daughter of the Isabella Patrick and Thomas McCulloch you men- tioned in your second message. You had also asked about Isabella. My only other info on her is that she was the daughter of Robert Patrick and is named in his will recorded in Augusta Co. WB 3:90. Isabella had a brother Charles, who married Mary Moffett, the sister of William Moffett, mentioned in the first paragraph. Some of the above info is my own research and some of it comes from research on file at the Hist. Soc. of Washington Co. I would be happy to share copies of it with you if you want to get in touch with me. If it takes me awhile to get back to you I haven't forgotten about it; my Mom had an accident a week ago and I am helping where I can. Tammy, I'd love to know how you fit into the McCullock/Whites Mill history. I was recently told that some one of my ancestors was possibly an owner. This person died in 1822. I realize that one the White's Mill Foundation site that they say documentation goes back only to mid 1800's but that they believe the mill to be up to a century older than that.
