They had nine children. One of them, Samuel, is my Great Great Grandfather. I have well documented information from Halbert on down. 1. [VAWASHIN] Saltville/late 1700s/Preston, Russell, Henry....
    2. Surnames mentioned: Campbell, Buchanan, Henry, Preston, Russell, Adams, Madison (A couple of pages from A History of Saltville, Virginia, by William B. Kent, 1955) (Practicing with my new hand held pen scanner :) ) In 1748 Charles Campbell surveyed land in Buffalo Lick and a patent was issued by the governor of Virginia on October 25, 1753. This Patent covered the lower portion of the valley and reached up to what is known as "the old store," or the sight of the first shaft well. Part of this was swampy and some was good rich soil. Charles Campbell died in 1767 and his widow, Margaret Campbell (sister of John Buchanan, progenitor of the Rich Valley Buchanans), with four daughters and one son, William, came to Aspenvale, near Seven Mile Ford, and built their home in 1768. This William CampbelI who became the husband of Elizabeth Henry, [sister of the famed Patrick Henry] Inherited the Salt Lick tract from his father. At this time, there were yet some Indians - peaceful ones, however - making salt from the saline springs on the edge of the lake. John Buchanan and Charles Campbell were surveyors ; both of them had the spirit and courage of the early Pioneers with the attributes of physical strength and endurance to withstand the hardships incidental to the primeval conditions of that period. William not unlike his father, endeared himself to the hearts of not only those who followed his leadership in civil and military life, but also those who depended upon his protection from the wiles of savage Indians and hostile renegades. His successful military achievements at the King's Mountain have so immortalized his fame that he is regarded as one of the greatest military leaders of this section of the State. General William Campbell left this valuable property to his children. Sarah and Charles Henry. Charles Henry died at five years of age, but previous to his death the Virginia Assembly gave him five thousand acres of land for the valuable service his father had rendered to both state and nation. Colonel Arthur Campbell, the boys guardian, selected land adjoining the Salt Lick tract, and when Charles Henry died, it all passed to his sister, Sarah, who married General Francis Preston on January 10, 1'793. General Campbell's widow became the wife of General William Russell, who was previously married to Tabitha Adams, daughter of Samuel Adams of the Northern Neck region of Virginia; and they with their family moved to Salt Lick in 1788 and built what was afterwards known as "Madam Russell" house. [The Methodist Church in Saltville is Madam Russell Methodist Church.] General Russell engaged in the production of salt by building a furnace and salt houses. The furnace he used was an open shed, and the kettles were the camp kettles of eight to ten gallons capacity. A controversy arose between General Russell and the Guardian of Sarah Campbell as to the use of her property, and the court appointed Colonel Thomas Madison, an uncle of Sarah, as her guardian. Colonel Madison came to Salt Lick in 1790, and built a log cabin later called the "Preston House." He dug a well and began the manufacture of salt. General Preston, who had married Sarah Campbell, built an addition to the cabin in 1795, moved his family there and began the production of salt by digging another well, enlarging the furnace and kettles, thereby increasing the output. In the meantime General William Russell died at the home of his son, Robert L. Russell, in Shenandoah county, on the14th of January, 1793. General Preston made his home in Salt Lick until the year 1810, then moved to Abingdon. Jane A Virginian living in Florida

    1. [VAWASHIN] SCOTT'S in Washington Co., VA early
    2. Donna
    3. Does anyone have SCOTT'S in their line that went to Kentucky, possibly late 1700's or early 1800's? My ancestor, WILLIAM SCOTT, was born 31 Oct. 1809 somewhere in Kentucky. He went from there to Washington Co., Indiana where he married Agnes Jamison in 1832, who had gone to Indiana with her family from Logan Co., Kentucky. She was born in So. Carolina in 1809. On census records for William and Agnes, they indicate that William's father was born in VA, and his mother was born in KY. Since many of my other ancestor's were also from Washington Co., VA, I thought perhaps there were some SCOTT'S who traveled in groups southward and into Kentucky. My William and Agnes (Jamison) Scott had four daughters, so tracking has been made more difficult on that line. I descend from their 2nd dau., Miranda Adeline Scott who married George Isiac McReynolds in Iowa in 1861. My main line of research in Washington Co., VA is McREYNOLDS - and they were in Russell and Washington Co.'s, VA for many years before heading west. Some on this line went to NC>TN> and Allen Co., KY, before going north. Donna

    1. Re: [VAWASHIN] Kings Salt Works
    2. Saltville, Virginia, is on the WAshington County/Smyth County line. Saltville is in the Smyth County side, but I think (?) the county line used to be positioned is a way that included Saltville in the Washington County side. Salt was pumped from underground deposits by injecting water to dissolve the salts deposits. The water was then pumped back out and boiled to dry and produce salt, thus "salt works" King was the name of a man who owned the "Works" at one time. The Confederate States relied on the the salt from this area for food preservation and medicine, among other things, with each state having it's own "kettle" for boiling the salt water. The following abstracted from WILLIAM KENT's book, A History of Saltville, 1955, 1991: page 23 "Man, better equipped to cope with the primeval conditions, began to industrialize the valley in a big way, producing com- mercial salt crYstals. One of the early pioneers of salt manu- facture in the valley was a young man by the name of William King, whom the Masonic Lodge (William King No. 227, A. F & A.M.) honors by perpetuating his name. Competition began to develop when 150 acres at the upper end of the valley were patented to Evan Lee. He sold to James Crabtree, who sold it to John Musgroves, and in 1795 Musgroves sold the original tract to William King (the Elder) for five hundred pounds sterling. King dug a well about fifty yards beyond "the old store," and in 1799 struck salt water at two hundred feet." 1. [VAWASHIN] New Stuff
    2. I have added a smorgasboard of new stuff to the History Transcripts page. They include: Casualty Rolls from the: 3rd NC from the Seven Days Battles (by accident, found a couple of kin, HARDISONs, in there!) 5th NC from Bristoe Station 4th TN After Action Report & Casualty List from Shiloh 14th MS from Ft. Donelson 20th MS After Action Report & Casualty List from Ft. Donelson Muster Roll of the Officers & NCOs of the 3rd NC Battalion during the Revolution Hopefully, I can get some more added tonight as I am furiously typing to get a bunch of stuff entered before tomorrow morning at 9 when that big bird takes me to Philly for vacation. I will be taking several Gettysburg sheets along involving NC casualty lists to work on as well as a couple of pension rolls (and whatever I can find in Philly). The URL for the site is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ At the Main TOC, click on Transcripts, then History... The new additions will be not be searchable by the search machine for day or so as the site was spidered on the 20th. I will try to remember my password and request a spider. Note: the casualty roll of the 3rd NC at the Seven Days was pretty readable EXCEPT...the adjutant could not make up his mind how he wanted to make "J" & "I" so it is impossible to tell them apart. The surnames were pretty easy (who ever heard of an Iohnson?) but the initials for the given names, well it was by Guess & God. Let me know of any corrections that need to be made. One company of the 3rd was formed in Onslow Cty. NC and I think the remainder came from eastern NC also as I recognize quite a few surnames from the Martin County area where I grew up. The main casualties occurred from what I have read, at Beaver Dam/Mechanicsville where a regiment of D.H. Hill's division attacked with Pender's Regiment of A.P. Hill's and were pretty well blown away. The bulk of the dead & wounded come from 7/1/62 at Malvern Hill. To quote from D.S. Freeman's Lee's Lieutenants on D.H. Hill's division attacking Malvern Hill, "It was not war; it was mass murder." (vol 1 pg 602) Hope this stuff helps someone. Best of wishes, Billy P.S. If anyone thinks this information would be helpful to another list, feel free to pass it on.

    1. [VAWASHIN] Fw: Thomas Hutton Washington Co. VA
    2. Judith Bisig
    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Judith Bisig To: VAWASHIN-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, June 22, 2001 9:41 AM Subject: Thomas Hutton Washington Co. VA I am trying to connect my Hutton's to the Washington Co. VA Huttons. My gg-grandfather Moses H. Hutton's death certificate names his parent as Thomas C. Hutton & Mary Hill. The 1900 Indiana Census has Moses H. and his mother and father's BP as VA. There is a Thomas Hutton in the Washington Co. census in 1820 & 1830, but not in the 1840 census. My speculation on the ancestor's of Moses H. Hutton being associated with the Washington Co. VA Huttons is based on migration patterns with other families from Washington Co. VA. The data indicates that there is a relationship with Moses Hutton who married Nancy Jinks, and lived in Washington County, VA. I know that several of this Moses Hutton's children migrated to Missouri. I also know that Sarah Jane Hutton, the daughter of Moses Hutton married Augustus Wedding and they migrated to Owen County, Indiana. Living in Owen County, Indiana in 1840 were Thomas Hutton, Moses Hutton, and Augustus Wedding. In the 1850 Census Augustus Wedding 40 & wife Jane 34, both from VA. plus 6 of their children are living in Putnam Co. IN. The oldest was born in VA & the next 5 were born in IN. In the Owen Co. Indiana 1850 Census are Moses H. Hutton, his wife Eliza and their 4 children; also, Thomas Hutton, his wife Mary, and their three children. There is also Elijah Hutton 28, from VA, his wife V. (Vernilda) and an infant daughter. Moses H. Hutton and Elijah may have been brothers, as Moses H. named a son Elijah. Also reinforcing the relationship between the Augustus Wedding family and Moses H. Hutton, one of Moses H.'s sons was named Augustus. According to the ages of Augustus' children in 1850, the oldest girl Elenor E.J. 14, was born in VA in 1836, and the next child Mary E. 11 was born in IN in 1839, so they must have left Virginia between 1836 and 1839. In the 1860 Census Thomas Hutton and his family are still in Owen Co., Indiana. Augustus Wedding and Moses H. Hutton and their families are now in Macon Co., Missouri living close to each other. In the 1870 Census Augustus and his family are still in Macon Co., MO, but Moses H. is no longer there. However, Moses H. Hutton and his family are in the 1880 Census in Putnam County, Indiana, where Augustus Wedding and his family were living in 1850. I have not been able to see the 1870 Indiana Census, but speculate that Moses H. Hutton was in Indian in 1870. I will greatly appreciate any ideas or information regarding these families.
