    1. Re: [VAWASHIN] Copyright Conumdrum
    2. Berry Spradley
    3. Billy............... I feel bad that you are so concerned about copyrights regarding genealogy information. I think that anyone who wants their family research kept secret by copyright (or otherwise) is an unbelievabily selfish person. WHAT IF I COPYRIGHTED YOUR BIRTH DATE? Could nobody else use it again? People who are hung up on not releasing information within their research data have a REAL problem which, frankly, tells me that they are at the top of the list of selfish human beings. I guarantee you that I would get great pleasure in providing you with ANY information that I have that would help you gain new information in your family search. I will use ANY reliable information about my family to help me learn about my ancestory and I will have NO respect for anyone who was lucky enough to find the info and then copyright it and tell me the I can't use it!!! 1. [VAWASHIN] Copyright Conumdrum
    2. I have been on all sides of the copyright issue. I have contacted Brent Holcomb & GPC for permission to do look-ups on the Rowan County Marriage book he did many years ago (JD is still eating Rolaids on that one...) ; I have used excerpts from books published by researchers on the family in my Web site, and I have "published" my transcriptions of public domain documents at the same Web site. Recently, even before the tnjohnso@yahoogroups.com discussion of this matter, I became curious about what if......what if some unscrupulous person grabbed the transcripts of public domain documents which I had put on the Web for all to freely use and put them in a book to sell on Ebay or some such, or at a pay Web site? Basically, the answer is that I am shafted, at least, according to my reading of the laws. My recourse? I have attempted to not tread on a published author's toes, because God knows, transcription & associated work is real work.....the only caveat (to me) is if the work is out of print and permission is unattainable....I am still trying to find the author of a genealogy for the Charles MARKLAND clan from 15 years ago (the magazine is defunct). I have decided to keep on doing what I have been doing....if a scumbag grabs the stuff, well, I do plant a few mines in the abstracts, but life goes on and I will continue adding NARA public documents to the Web as well as any other public domain lists I can find. The Internet is a free medium for the betterment of every individual and I will not let the hoodlums run me from my neighborhood! In conclusion, to avoid copyright fights, just think of how you would feel if your work is freely distributed without permission. Best of wishes & sorry for the unsolicited mail, Billy P.S. I will have the Gettysburgh Casualty lists for the 5th, 6th, 21st, & 57th NC Regts. on-line Sunday night. I meant to have it done in time for the Anniversary but I could not find it before we left for vacation last week. Of course, when I got home, I found it filed under the letter "G"!!

    2. I am looking for information on the Samuel A Miller and Elizabeth Baughman family. Samuel and Elizabeth were married in Washington Co, VA and had their first child in 1851. My great grandfather, John Wesley Miller, was born on March 19, 1853. He, later after marrying Susan Holder, moved to Warren Co, IN. I was wondering if anyone had any information on Samuel and Elizabeth and who their parents were. Thanks!

    1. [VAWASHIN] Fee Increase-SS Applications
    2. I received this from another mailing list and it was the first I had heard of it. Fee jumps from $7 to $27. It does seem excessive. Subject: [CP-L] SS F.O.I.A. Application Fee Increase May I suggest that people interested in this matter write to Larry G. Massanari, Acting Commissioner of Social Security, and tell him that they are opposed to the increase in the cost of obtaining copies of SS applications. Here's his address: Larry G. Massanari Acting Commissioner of Social Security Social Security Administration Headquarters 6401 Security Boulevard Baltimore, MD 21235-0001 800-772-1213 May I also suggest that they write to their U.S. Congressional Representatives. Here's how to find their contact info: U.S. Senate: <<http://www.loc.gov/global/legislative/senators.html>> U.S. House: <<http://www.loc.gov/global/legislative/house.html>> Because many politicians seem to be out of touch with the average taxpayer, I intend to do this by mail, sending them a print-out of this page <<http://www.ssa.gov/foia/foia_guide.htm>> and using a highlighting pen to draw attention to the new fees. In particular, I will emphasize the jump in cost from $7 to $27 --- 400%!!! Who knows if it will do any good? But I just can't let this pass without telling my elected representatives how I feel about our government finding yet another way to gouge American taxpayers. Here are four (of many) reasons why: 1. People were/are required by law to make these applications. They had/have no choice in the matter. 2. People paid/pay vast sums of money into SS for their entire working lives. The government now has a *nerve* to charge exorbitant fees for what amounts to public records that have already been paid for many millions of times over. 3. Many, if not most, of the people doing genealogical research happen to be SS recipients themselves. They can't afford to pay $27 for each search. This could seriously curtail their ability to use their time in this productive endeavor, which is so beneficial to our society as a whole. 4. These records are supposed to be readily available to the public. Aside from lack of imagination and will, there's no reason why the SS Administration couldn't make these documents available over the Internet for free, as has been done with the Ellis Island passenger manifests. One of the reasons the current cost of providing these records is so high is because the SS Administration insists on using outdated technology --- hard copies by mail. I plan to post this message to all the genealogy sites I can find. And I give permission to anyone who reads this message to forward it to their friends, family, and favorite genealogy sites as well. Perhaps if people can demonstrate a ground swell of opposition to this increase, by flooding these people with letters, the SSA will reconsider the amount of the increase. It's probably true that $7 is too low to cover the costs. That being the case, most people probably would not object to a $12 or $14 charge. But 400%??? Really!!! This is outrageous!!!

    1. [VAWASHIN] Re: cross, leonard
    2. My great-grandmother was Almeda (aka "Almedia") Leonard who was married to William Thomas in 1896. The marriage records show her as Margaret Leonard. Her parents were listed as Caloway and Margaret Leonard in the marriage records. The couple lived near Benhams near Wolf Run. I believe that both are buried in the Gum Hill Baptist Church cemetery. William Thomas was killed in about 1908 and I was told that he died after being kicked by a mule on the farm. The 1910 Census shows the widow "Almeda" Thomas living as a farmer with her several children. Later in life, I believe that she lived with my grandfather Arthur (A.C.) Thomas (m. Mary Vanhook) and his family around Bristol and Blountville in Sullivan County TN. I am researching the Thomas family. William had a twin brother John and they were born in 1864 to Robert b. 1820 and Bettie Thomas. I want to know more about Robert and Bettie and their parents.
