Interestingly, Frances Hopkins apparently was hanged as a horse thief, but may also have been hanged as a Tory. However, his son Gardner was a Revolutionary War hero in New York and was paid with land grants in the former Floyd County, KY areas now known as Pike and Morgan Counties. In fact, my family still lives on Gardner Fork (which was named for him) in Pike County. Gardner is buried in Morgan County. In addition, I may have information on the Lewis line that may be of interest. If you like, e-mail me directly at bhopkins@eastky.net. Bruce Hopkins

It is my understanding Frances was hanged as much because he was a Tory as he was a horse thief, but it is strange that his son Gardner was supposedly a Revolutionary War hero. Gardner received land grants for his service in New York and came to Floyd County, KY where he is buried in the part of Floyd County now known as Morgan County. He also had property in the current Pike County and my Hopkins family still lives on the creek (Gardner Fork) bearing his name. However, I have no connection (supposedly) to this line since my Hopkins came from Patrick County, VA in 1822. I am exploring this line and I would love to share information with you. Please contact me directly if you like at bhopkins@eastky.net. I would also like to extend the invitation to any other Frances or Gardner Hopkins researchers. Bruce Hopkins

Surnames: Robinson, Edmondson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACE/398.2 Message Board Post: Ethel ... years ago we corresponded when I lived here in Nebraska and also in Iowa. My last move in Iowa was in Dec. 1998 to Stuart, IA (just north of you). I was sick most of the time we were there, recovering from surgery and then we moved in Dec. 1999 back to Nebraska. Wish I would have remembered that you lived in Greenfield, as I did go there to get license plates, etc. My ancestor was John Robinson who married Lydia Cole of Washington Co., VA and lived/died in Carter Co., TN. I have some theories on his ancestry, but nothing proven yet. In my notes I show that a John Robinson, b. ca 1730 d. August 1817 had children: Mitchell, Moses, John, David, Elizabeth, Hannah and Jane. With the girl named Jane it is possible that the contested will you are viewing pertains to either that daughter (thus making the men contesting it her brothers or half-brothers), or it could be as you suggested the widow (2nd wife) of their father, John Robinson. I would suggest that you get as much as you can photocopied or on microfilm to view of the contested papers involved in this will. Usually they will contain very valuable information, such as relationships. As for newspaper accounts, I don't know which papers if any would have survived in either Washington or Wythe counties. Certainly that would be an option, but the actual documents would be more valuable. Most certainly Mitchell, John, James, Moses, Alexander and John Edmondson were related to her. I feel that my John Robinson links into this family somewhere, just have not put my finger on the right place as yet. Good luck!

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Robinson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACE/398 Message Board Post: Researching my ROBINSON family of Washington Co in S.W. Virginia. Can anyone interested in Robinson research please help me? There was a disputed court case: Wm K.Trigg vs Mitchell Robinson etal concerning the disputed authenticity of the Will of Jane Robinson of Washington Co, VA. bearing date Feb 21, 1835. The executor was William K.Trigg; those contesting the will were Mitchell Robinson, John Robinson, James Robinson, Moses Robinson, Alexander Robinson & John Edmondson. This Will is recorded in Will Book 8, p 119, Washington Co., VA. It stipulates the freeing of Jane's slaves and gives them a division of all of her property both real & personal. The Will states in part "it is my direction that my executor make earnest application to the Legislature of the State of Virginia after my decease for the passage of a law permitting my slaves to remain in the State of Virginia. Should the Legislature not grant permision, and in the event of failure, I make William K. Trigg the sole devisee of my whole estate real & personal. The Robinsons claimed this was not the Will & Testament of the said Jane Robinson deceased, and asked that it not be admitted to record. Upon an appeal by order of the County Court of Washington made on the 25th day of Aug 1836 the refusal to admit this to record ruling was reversed and the Will was ordered to be admitted to record. The controversy was such that the case was removed to Wythe County Sept 24, 1839. It is not known but speculated that Jane Robinson may have been the widow and 2nd wife of John Robinson who died in Washington Co. leaving a Will dated Dec 19, 1826. Does anyone have any familiarity with this court case? Does anyone know for certain exactly who this Jane Robinson was? Am very desirous of locating any published newspaper accounts or printed material regarding the controversial court case and will pay for any costs incurred. Thank You.
