    1. [VAWASHIN] Reynolds/Williams
    2. Joe Cannon
    3. Hello. Is anyone researching the Bernard Reynolds family or his daughter Lucy who married William Williams? I am trying to find more info on Jesse Jones, one of Bernard's slaves. Jesse Jones died Tues 11/24/1903 in Tazewell Co VA. He had 2 write ups in the paper. 11/27/1903 Clinch Valley News Death of Jessie Jones Jesse Jones, the oldest colored citizen of this town, died on Tuesday. He was perhaps, at least, 80 years old. He has been in Tazewell nearly 40 years, coming here from Russell county. 12/11/1903 Clinch Valley News Jessee Jones' Age Mr. C H Reynolds says that we were mistaken instating that Jessee Jones, the colored man who died here recently was about 80 years old. Mr. Reynolds says that Bernard Reynolds, his great grandfather, brought Jessee from Richmond to Russell county 81 years ago. He (Jessee) was at that time, 10 years old. This would make the deceased, therefore, 91 years old or thereabouts. This being true, he was, perhaps the oldest citizen of this county. According to Bernard's Will on the Russell Co page, Jesse was left to his daughter: WILL OF BERNARD REYNOLDS Russell County, Virginia Will Book 4A, Page 621 Executed 05 Feb 1833 I Bernard Reynolds of Russell County and State of Virginia (being of sound mind but weak in body) do hereby make my last will and testament hereby revoking all other or former wills or testaments by me heretofore made in manner and form following that is to say. ....... Thirdly: I give to my daughter Lucy Reynolds and her heirs forever one negro boy named Jesse. I believe Lucy married William Williams. I was unable to find them in the census in Russell Co. Jesse's first son George said on his marriage cert that he was born in Washington Co around 1852 so I checked there and I think I found them: 1850 Washington Co Wm Williams 74 VA Lucy 56 Alexander 16 Sarah 14 Laura 12 Betsy McFarland 3 Wm 6 There were 3 Wm Williams in Washington Co. But I only saw one in the slave schedule and it doesn't look like Jesse could have been with that one. Was Jesse given or sold to someone else in the family? Jesse's wife Celia and their children show up free in Tazewell Co in 1860 but Jesse is not with them. Were Celia and the children freed by someone or was Celia born free? In 1870 they are back in Russell Co then back to Tazewell Co from 1880 - 1900 (living separate). It's possible that Celia's maiden name was Williams. If that is the case then perhaps Jesse was still in the Williams family. Thanks for any help or input. Joecan

    1. [VAWASHIN] Projects
    2. I am taking a break in the family genealogy (getting source documents transcribed & online) to work on a couple of new projects for the web site. I think several people on the various western NC, VA and east TN lists may be interested in the one following. First, I am abstracting from Prince George's County, MD Inventory Book DD1 1741-1744 lists of debts due to the various estates. So far, about half through, I have about 200 names. Not all are residents of PG county, i.e., Augustus WASHINGTON owed an estate 5 pistoles, but when they are not, most seem to give the residence of the debtor. Also there are comments on some of them such as "Deceased, no effects" & "Run". I assume "run" means the person left town. I proofread the first half yesterday and hopefully will get the remainder typed tonight to proof Wednesday (my night out..LOL). Once that is online, I will get to DD2. Oh, a point. The people listed are usually just people who owed money to the deceased when he/she died. They usually are not hard core debtors...and since so much of the economy of that time was tied up in trade/barter till the next crop was harvested there is an intersting group of people from all social strata. Second and I need some help on this. There are many, many slaves listed on these inventories giving, usually, name & age. I plan on going through all the inventories again to abstract these in hopes of helping some of their descendents. Does anyone know of a "clearinghouse" for data of this sort? I will start that after the DD1 is "published". Best of wishes, Billy

    2. Richard Carlyle Stewart
    3. Hello - I would like to thank the various people on this list who wrote me regarding Robert Stewart and others. Robert was listed as a son of William Stewart whom I believe migrated from Scotland. According to one gentleman, Robert married an Elizabeth Hussey. My ggg grandfather Robert Stewart was married to a Mary Unknown in 1850 in the Mercer Co., Va census. The Robert Stewart, son of William, was in Washington Co. in 1810 but not 1820. In 1820 and 1830 I find a Robert Stewart in Giles Co. He then is on the Mercer Co. censuses for 1840, 1850, and 1860. Mercer became a county in 1837, I believe. Of course I had hoped that the Robert in Washington in 1810 was mine. Again, thank you all very much. Sincerely, Richard Stewart

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACE/252.260 Message Board Post: I have been researching my Wheeler roots, which are in Yancey County NC, for some time. Two other Wheeler researchers have evidence that the Wheelers came to NC from Washington Co. VA. This line has a very strong tendency to repeat family names - I have Hamptons, Byrds, Rays and Hensleys in this line (the women) and these names have been repeated numerous times as middle or first names of children - i.e., my great-grandfather is Newton Byrd Wheeler; his great-grandmother on his mother's side is Susannah Byrd. In this line, one of Newton Byrd Wheeler's brothers is **Mannin** Wheeler, b.c. 1866. An unusual name I've been wondering about....a faint clue? Mannin's and Newton's parents are John Henry Wheeler and Axey Mariah Honeycutt - Axey's mother was a Hampton, her grandmother on her father's side is this Susannah Byrd. There is also evidence that the Hamptons and Byrds originated in VA before heading to NC right around the time of the Revolutionary War. So now, a new l! ine to ferret out....did my Hampton/Byrd ancestors have a Mannin in their lines...?
