My Great Great Grandad's name was Martin Van Buren Davis born between 1862-1865 his nicknames were Mark, Matt or Mart. He had one brother named Alex(Alexander?) Davis born between 1858-1860. I looked thru the 1860 census and I noticed James R. Davis and his wife Elizabeth I noticed among their chidren there was listed one Male 3 month old child named Alexander. I was wondering if anyone would know if they had another son a few years later named Martin V. Davis? If so then James and Elizabeth may be my Great Great Great grandparents. Here's some info on Martin He lived in Rogersville(Hawkins county)Tennessee and also in Greeneville,TN. He married Martha Matilda Jones on May 9, 1886 in Greeneville, Tennessee. Martin may have been in the 1870-1880 Washington Co.,Virginia census. The post office listed for the Western District was in Mendota,Va. Thank you

I'm looking for the parents of Jane or Sarah Jane Longworth born Mar. 18, 1822 in N.C. and married to Isaiah Randolph Hayton in Washington Co., Va. in 1842 and she died Nov. 20, 1901 in W.C. The only Longworth I can find is a John in 1840. He has two daughters of about the same age as Jane but I need further proof than that for the DAR. As there wasn't any in the 1850 census there I'm wondering if he moved and would be in a close census. Will appreciate any help in this matter. Thanks, Barb Jones in Ohio
While searching for William MARKLAND through the Washington County, VA deed index, I browsed through the B listings and found a deed listed for Charles BASSENDINE from John COLEY & wife in Deed Book 2 pg. 46[?]. It did not give the year (or I didn't write it down) but I have ordered the film. My question is has anyone else run into this name or surname, Charles BASSENDINE, in the late 1700's early 1800's? It is the same name as my great-great great-grandfather and as that name is extremely hard to come by and Washington County is relatively close to what is now Carter County, TN, I thought it might be worth a hard look. Best of wishes & thanks in advance, Billy Markland

Surnames: Coffman, Hawkins, Grant Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACE/415.2 Message Board Post: I sent a message earlier but it didn't get posted. As I said before, you may be able to help me. Hugh M. Grant had at least two siblings, Mary Moore and Edwin. Their father was Dr. James Grant (you said he was Hugh's grandfather, but since he was born in 1777, that doesn't seem possible). Anyway, I found Mary and Edwin while pursuing a theory about the parents of my great-grandfather, William Coffman, who was married to Emma Ann Hawkins in Abingdon in 1852 but lived there less than two years. One of his sons was named Edwin Grant, so one possibility was that "Grant" was a family name (perhaps his mother's maiden name), and perhaps "Edwin" was as well. William's mother was named Mary (born in Va.), so I did a search for a Mary Grant and hoped that an Edwin Grant would pop up. And they did—and in the county that had a connection with William, who lived in Roanoke County before relocating to Abingdon in 1851. Unfortunately, she married a James Eakin about 1825. However, she could've been widowed and remarried to a Coffman and had a son by 1830, the year my ggrandfather William was born. Do you have any information about Mary Moore Grant Eakin? Thanks, Sue Coffman

They married in Abingdon in 1852 and moved shortly thereafter to Tennessee. Her parents were Mary Young West and William Hawkins, a coach trimmer. They were Baptists. My goal is to find William's birthplace and his parents' names. All I know is that his father was born in Pa. and his mother was named Mary (perhaps Grant was her maiden name) and was born in Va. William was a tinner and was orphaned at age 13. At that time he was living in Roanoke County. Thanks, Sue Coffman

Surnames: Coffman, Hawkins, Edmundson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACE/451 Message Board Post: I'm trying to track the ancestors of Henry A. Edmundson (slightly different spelling, but that happens all the time). He was an attorney in Roanoke County in 1850, and in 1843 he was named a guardian for my ggrandfather, William Coffman, age 13. At that time Henry was in his late 20s. He was also in charge of the 1840 census for the county. He married Maria Lewis in 1840. Since so many Edmondsons were in Washington County in 1850, and since that's where my 21-year-old ggrandfather moved in 1851, I thought there might be some connection between other than just a legal one. I haven't been able to identify William Coffman's parents, but he was married in Abingdon in 1852, though he, his wife, Emma Ann Hawkins, and her parents left within a few months for Tennesee. Thanks for any suggestions. Sue Coffman
