    2. Do you have any info re James Martin Woods b/1816--d/12/16/1861 who wed Mary Ann "Polly" Lyon 8/29/1850 --Saltville--Abingdon area.--had one son, William James Wood, b/8-14-1855 in Va. and two daughters, both of whom died young. This info i have from the Bible of Polly's father, Jacob Lyon of Saltville, Va. I search for any possible descendants of the son, James William Woods. I am descended from Polly's sister. The only possible father I can figure for James Martin Woods is a Joseph Woods and Jane??. Joseph died 1846 and Jane born 1782--only records I could find. James M. Woods is noted as a Methodist preacher in the "The Marriages of Washington Co. Va. 1781-1853." but little infor about him is given, except to refer to "Minister's Return Book 1785-1853" of which i have not seen. Or, to quote from my book of Va. Marriages--from "Barbe' Census" (?) and "Summers, pg 845" Any one have these two books?????? There were two James M. Woods in that area apparently, because I crossed with another reseacher once who claimed their James M. Woods with a different wife and also a minister in the area. You're confused? So am I. Thanks for any help. Jane G.

Surnames: HAYS, WOODS Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACE/487.1 Message Board Post: Jim--Many hours spent on researching this line. I believe Robert Rodgers Hays b. 9-18-1835, to be son of George Hays b. 5-12-1802, son of William Hays b. 1773, Rockbridge Co., VA. My family stated we descend from John and Rebecca Hays of VA. Am in process of trying to connect William Hays b. 1773, married to Abigail (?) b. Berkley Co., VA, to John and Rebecca Hays. This George Hays in 1850 Census, Greene Co., TN, with wife Sarah W. (Rodgers). Children: William A., ROBERT R., Jane, Nancy, Mary E., Martha C. Am trying to confirm that this is our Robert Rodgers Hays. Robert Rodgers Hays, b. 9-18-1835, married Elizabeth J. Woods. These are my great-grandparents. Both buried in Roller Cemetery, Sullivan Co., TN. My family spoke of a grandfather 1) doing carpentry work on Tusculum College, Greene County, and 2) one serving as Confederate conscriptor in Civil War, and needing to relocate afterwards. I believe Robert Rodgers Hays moved from Greene County to Washington Co., VA, then to Sullivan County, TN. His children probably all born in Washington Co., VA. Can provide more details. Hope this helps. Betty Hays Peterson

    3. While I was in southwest Virginia last fall, I took some photographs of the Revolutionary War monument that sits in front of the Smyth County courthouse. This monuments lists the names of the area citizens who fought in the Revolutionary War. I would be happy to forward copies of these photos to anyone who thinks they might have an ancestor listed there and hasn't had an opportunity to visit the area themselves. Could this be the child OR be a descendant of the child who was an end result product of rape by Edward Bond upon Diana Jones (Mrs. Thomas). She was "fined" $ for having a "bastard" child. Bond got off scot-free for all charges of rape, as well as having SHOT Diana's husband, Thomas Jones, who died the same year. I am looking for the child who was conceived in 1777, so born 1777/more likely 1778, in Washington County, Va. Ruth

    2. Linda Bailey
    3. Anne, The Washington Co. Historical Society has published a wonderful resource called: "Guardian Bonds Washington County, Virginia 1780-1872" Abstracted by Gerald H. Clark from the court clerk's records and published in 1984. These are records of guardians or committees who were appointed under bond to manage and protect the property of orphaned childern and others who were for any reason incapable of managing their own affairs. I don't remember the cost but it was extremely reasonable and I certainly have had much use from it, referring to it quite often. I would be glad to do a quick look up for you. I think you can order a copy from the website publications list. Linda

    1. Re: [VAWASHIN] Thomas Jones and wife Diana
    2. Ruth, do you know if Thomas had a brother named Michael? My g-g-g-g-g grandmother, Margaret MORLEY, was married first to a David JONES in either Prince George or Anne Arundel county, MD. David died about 1721 leaving two sons, Thomas born abt. 1720 & Michael birth unknown. The reason I am suspicious is that William MARKLAND, Margaret's oldest son by her second marriage to Mathew MARKLAND, ended up in Washington County, VA where he died abt. December 1811. Granted not much to go on but that is what makes this "hobby" so fun. I have the films at the local FHC of Washington County, WBs 1-6 and I will check out WB 1 for the JONES the next time I am over. Best of wishes, Billy

    3. Am new to this state for research. Having to work my way north instead of going south for a change. Here is what I have: ROSENBAUM, ANDREW Washington County Federal Population Schedule 67th District page 159 from database of VA 1850 Federal Census Index This info was just shared with me from a researcher of the WVA Raleigh Co mailing list. Thank you Sue. Andrew was about 42 yrs of age when a son Grover L ROSENBAUM was born in 1892. As Grover lived in WVA, know my ANDREW 's family didnt always live in VA. So my best guesstimate would be maybe ANDREW's age in 1850 anywhere from under 1 to age 10. (?) Any assistance in this request would be most WELCOME.
