Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACE/500 Message Board Post: I am searching for my g-grandfather's household. His name is Miles Quesenbery and I know that he was born in Grayson Co. Va, but was out of his father's house by 1850 Wash Co. census. Miles was born about 1818, and I thought perhaps the family had moved to Washington co. before he left home. He would be in perhaps the 1820 to 1840 census there. Any help would be appreciated on George S. Quesenberry in Washington Co. between 1820 and 1840. Thanks. Kathy Q.

    3. The Revolutionary War monument at the Smyth County courthouse states that it is dedicated to the soldiers and war heroes from the area that eventually became part of Smyth County in 1832. I assume this means that soldiers from the area of Washington County that remained part of Washington County are not included in the list of names on that monument. Does anyone know where I can find a list of Revolutionary War veterans from Washington County? Thanks! Janet Messer Micanopy Florida

Surnames: Jones Carr Bond Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACE/485.2 Message Board Post: HI, In response to your posting regarding bastardy bonds, now that I have been enlightened somewhat, bastardy bonds were apparently a penalty or fine placed on a woman for having a child while in an unmarried state. I will do more research and see when this practice of penalty was discontinued. Women weren't thought much of in those days, and on just about the same level as slaves, who were property of the owners, and in some cases abused. Owners were sometimes killed by their slaves, with good reason, no doubt. Ruth

    1. [VAWASHIN] Early Newspapers
    2. Hi As most of you know, back in the 1770s Botetourt Co. was a major county in Virginia. By 1772 one of the counties created from it was Fincastle Co. (1772-1777). Two of the many created out of Fincastle are Washington (1777) and Russell (1786) counties. Does anyone know if there were any newspapers published for these areas during this early period? If there were no newspapers for these particular areas, does anyone know what publications early settlers in these areas might have had access to. Caroline

    3. I recently experienced a major problem with my computer that necessitated my re-formating my hard drive and reinstalling all of my software. In the process I lost track of where I was in responding to requests for copies of my photos of the Smyth County Revolutionary War monument and gravestones. If any of you sent me an e-mail message in the past week or so regarding these photos, or anything else, and haven't had a response from me, please contact me again. But please give me a couple of days to respond. I am still getting my computer back in order! Thanks! Best regards, Janet Messer Micanopy, Florida

    1. [VAWASHIN] Litton
    2. Caroline, I could not help but be intrigued by the name Caleb LITTON. In one of my trees is Caleb LETTON of Frederick county, MD whose will was sworn to by the witnesses 5/12/1763. When written, 4/21/1759, the will named the following: wife Grace, daughter Grace Summers (later Markland), sons Caleb & Michael, daughter Johanna Hall. Caleb the younger was appointed executor. Do any of the names sound familiar? BTW, if you want to peruse the transcript of the will, it is at my web site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ Click Transcripts, then Wills, then scroll down to Maryland and pick out Caleb's. Best of wishes, Billy Markland

    1. [VAWASHIN] Anglegian Church in Abingdon, Virginia.
    2. Hi Can anyone give me any info on the Anglegian Church in Abingdon, Virginia? I found the name in an obit from 1889, for one of my Litton ancestors. I have been trying for years to find marriage records for my GGGgrandfather Caleb Litton (b. abt 1765 - d.1824) the son of John Richard Litton & Sarah Willcoxen. I know he grew up in the Russell Co./ Washington Co. area. He is listed as militiaman from Sullivan county, North Carolina, under Col. Isaac Shelby, during the battle of King's Mountain in 1780. I believe he married Rebecca Berry around 1790-95. I originally thought that I might find something at Sinking Springs Presbytarian Church in Abingdon, but that was a dead end. Further research revealed that the early Littons were either Catholic or Anglican. Thanks, Caroline

    1. [VAWASHIN] Thomas MURRAY 1790-1870
    2. amc
    3. The death certificate of Ephraim MURRAY lists his parents as Thomas MURRAY and Nancy ALLEN. However, Washington County 1850-1870 census records list Jemima as Thomas' wife -- Ephraim was born abt. 1852. Ephraim's marriage record also lists Thomas & Jemima MURRAY as parents. Possibly the informant on the death certificate got the name wrong. Thomas was born about 1790 in NC, and Jemima was born abt. 1815 in VA. Does anyone have info on Thomas, Nancy, or Jemima? Who were Thomas' parents? Thank you, ann
