Newland prior to Civil War. I would like to know which Lindsey this would be, and any other information about this business. What is known is the property was owned by Geo. V. Litchfield and was located east end of Abingdon where Main St. crosses a creek between Tanner St. and Deadmore St. LC Newland lived in the house just north of the tannery on Valley St (this is probably Leslie's Lewellyn C. Newland). Sorry, Leslie, I could not find any Minnick's or Spior's in this reference. This makes for interesting reading and has a map with the locations of all the properties described. And that's that. Katie

Hi, While researching my Litton ancestors from Washington and Russell County VA. (some migrated to nearby Tenn. and this has taken me to the TN Gen Web site) I found this letter which, I believe, refers to the Walker family recently referred to on the VAWASHIN list. Not only is it wonderfully insightful as to life during this time period, but also has a lot of genealogy info which I thought might be helpful to others. Caroline The following is a neatly hand-scripted letter written in purple ink (likely pokeberry juice) to William Thomas Walker, his wife and family from "S. J. S." (Sarah Jane Spitzer - W.T.W.'s sister), dated May 25, 1885. No spelling or punctuation has been corrected. This letter was submitted by: Adanta3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Dear Brother Sister & family after being on a visit last week at Gabe's(7.) and John's(4.) returned home yesterday, found all in common health Eliza Berry(10.) & family was hear she can now go a bout (sic) on crutches has bin down a long time she asked me if I knew they had seen you since I had been gone, the thought struck me you had sent your picture I inquired about it Mother(2.) gave me the letter & picture Thom I cannot express how glad I was, Thom you know how my silly way is to say I can hardly write for looking at it it seems like I have seen you. you could not sent me any thing that I could a bin (sic) as proud of as I am of it. Glen, Here are some clues. I believe Benjamin Logan sold his farm on Clear Creek, about six miles West of US !9, to a Teeter when Benjamin went to Ky. about 1775. This might be part of your line.. Also, a Teeter family lived, and some of them still live, in Smyth co., Va. at the foot of Iron Mtn., south of Chilhowie, Va.. This location was once a part of Washington co.. G.
