Hello List, I am trying to find any information about the Rev. John Phelps of the Brumly Gap/Mongle area of NW Washington Co.,VA. I am fairly certain he was at least active in the 1869-1876 time period. Does anyone know his denomination and/or the church he preached at. A very big bonus would be if anyone knows if there are any church records in existence. Thank you so much for your time. Dan W. Perry
The census does this by Districts; I do not find Township names given. There would probably be many townships in Washington County, not just one. I have copied from the 1880 census which gives the various districts. 1880 U.S. Federal Census - Virginia 1880 U.S. Federal Census . Virginia . Washington . >>Could someone tell me what township Washington, County is in. Thanks Rich<<< Washington County is not in a township. Washington County is an independent county in the Commomwealth of Virginia. Abindon is the county seat.. At the time land was being surveyed in Washington county the "township" system of laying out land grants had not been instituted.. G. Does anyone know anything about the ease of acquiring vital records (from either of the below listed offices)? Washington County Vital Records Office http://www.vitalrec.com/vacounties17.html#Washington Office of Vital Records, Richmond http://www.vitalrec.com/va.html I believe I've heard that much of Washington County's vital record information was destroyed in some kind of a fire. Does anyone know (1) if this is true (2) if it is true, what the extent of the damage was? Is it worth requesting a document or do they simply not exist? Thanks in advance for any information! Best, Kathryn

Thanks so much to everyone for their help with the Kinderhook mystery!! Best, Kathryn -----Original Message----- From: Carol Hardin [mailto:rhardin@infinet.com] Sent: Monday, April 01, 2002 2:47 PM To: Kathryn Camp Subject: Re: [VAWASHIN] Kinderhook Kathryn Camp wrote: I'm sure that there was a Kinderhook in Washington County since my Leonard ancestors show up on the 1870, 1880, and 1900 censuses in Kinderhook, Washington county, VA. This page - http://www.ls.net/~newriver/va/wash32a.htm - discusses the creation of a "Kinderhook magisterial district" prior to 1860 and includes data from the Kinderhook district as late as 1930. However, when I looked Kinderhook, VA up on MapQuest, I also came up with something not in Washington County and it probably was in Madison or Greene county, as Alice suggests. Perhaps "Kinderhook" never designated a town in Washington County, rather only a district and this districting system is no longer in use? As I mentioned before, I have found references to the "Goodson-Kinderhook Volunteer Fire Department" (see for example, this Bristol Herald Courier obituary for Clarence Wilmer Kilby: http://www.bristolnews.com/obits/MGB44039MJC.html) and Goodson is also a district to which the ~newriver page (listed above) makes reference. This site has an 1820 map of Washington County - http://image.vtls.com/cgi-sid/local_image.cgi?ox=0&oy=0&filename=/BPW/maps/7 11-36.sid&referer=http://image.vtls.com/BPW/indexes/711-712.html&title=++WOO D-BOYE+COUNTY+MAPS+AND+CHART&res=3&size=12&part=1&fullwidth=5155&fullheight= 2948&header=&parts=0 (be careful to get all of that) - it is number 36 on this page: http://image.vtls.com/BPW/indexes/711-712.html (which is a more manageable link) - but I didn't find Kinderhook on it. I didn't look as carefully as I could have, but it is also possible that 1820 is too early for Kinderhook to appear on the map. This site has an 1895 map of Washington County - http://www.livgenmi.com/washingtonVA.htm - but I found no Kinderhook or Goodson on it. Another possibility is that Kinderhook district was originally in Washington County but - after the movement of county boundaries over time - it is now in Greene or Madison county, but a (very) quick perusal of county locations seems to suggest that they are not in the right location for this. Anothr KINDERHOOK was the area in SW Va where the town of Mendota now lies. In fact Mendota was once called Kinderhook. It was Washington Co. bordering on Scott Co. So many places in SW Va and East Tenn. changed names. jane G.
