Sherwoods, Mains, Coles, Brundages, Bishops and others who emigrated from Washington County, VA to Delaware County, Ohio belonged to Marlborough Primitive Church there. My Gr-Gr-Gr Grandfather David Sherwood was a Deacon there. His son, My Gr-Gr Grandfather Levi Bishop Sherwood was the Minister there for over 30 years in the latter half of the 19th Century. My Uncle, Wendell Main, told me on many occasions that the Sherwood and Main families were intertwined from early days back in CN, NY, and later in VA. and Ohio. I would be very interesting in obtaining a copy of the 16 page paper, written by Redmond Cole, that you refer to. Would be happy to reimburse you for your costs. Oh, one other thing. My Gr-Gr-Grandparents, David and Margaret (Bishop) Sherwood lived in a cabin owned by Joseph Cole their first winter in Delaware County, Ohio. Margaret's brot! her, James Bishop, later married Sarah Cole. Please contact me. Bob Sherwood

    1. WHEELER - WOOLSEY - KINNECUT - BISHOP - COLE
    2. Janet Zengel Messer
    3. The recent mention of the WHEELER surname has encouraged me to inquire about the following: I have a copy of a land record from Bristol County, Massachusetts, dated 28 September 1765, that was signed by my ancestors Joseph and Freelove (MASON) COLE. Joseph and Freelove were identified as living in Poughkeepsie, New York ("of Perkipcy in Duchess County in ye government of New York"), but apparently they made the trip back home in order to sell this property, which I assume came to them as part of a family estate settlement. However, it is not clear where the deed was actually signed. It was notarized by John KINNECUT, Justice of the Peace, and also witnessed by Hezekiah KINNECUT, James WHEELER, and Thomas WOOLSEY. It's quite possible that James WHEELER and Thomas WOOLSEY are the same gentlemen by those names who appeared in Washington County, Virginia around the same time and same area as my COLEs. I know that the KINNECUTs, WOOLSEYs, and WHEELERs were originally from Massachusetts, but at least the the WOOLSEYs and WHEELERs were also reportedly in Dutchess or Ulster County prior to moving to Virginia. Does anyone researching these families know where these individuals were living at the time this deed was signed? Thanks! Best regards, Janet Zengel Messer Micanopy, Florida

At this time it appears reasonably certain that this couple was married in the colony of New York, that they migrated to Washington Co., VA during the War of the Revolution; that he died there in 1809 and that she went to Deleware County, OH about 1816 and died ther in 1826. Wm. Edmiston having led an attack retaking the (Austin's) lead mines near Ft. Chiswell, VA. from the Torrys who were occupying them. This was interesting because 1) these were the only domestic source of lead in the Colonies, 2) because my Crockett ancestors lived near Ft. Chiswell and "the L:ead Mines" and 3) because the "Fincastle Resolutions" ( a local Decleration of Independance) was drafted at a meeting held at "the Lead Mines". Unfortunatly, I failed to keep a record of where I found this reference and will probably never find it again..
