More ways to use the search option for the Library of Virginia's patents and grants at http://ajax.lva.lib.va.us/F/FMXF22YJ5DG7TNCCAM9D59K13F6U83U16B958FD8KL3SVS5SFH -02931?func=file&file_name=find-m-lva01 Near the top where it says: "Type word or phrase" Enter something similar to one of the following examples. (You don't need to capitalize any words): To search for a surname in a county with the same name as the surname such as Montgomery County, Type: "Montgomery County" "Montgomery J*" to find Montgomery's in Montgomery county with a first name starting with the Letter J (James, John, Joseph, etc.) that have Land Grants. You need to include all the quotes. The above only works with Montgomery(s) that are in the database as: Montgomery, James (surname first, given name last) The above will NOT find Montgomery(s) that are in the dateabase as: James Montgomery (given name first, surname last), To find -- James Montgomery -- you would need to Type: "Montgomery County" "James Montgomery" ("Montgomery County" "J* Montgomery") will NOT work. - - - - - - - - - - Sometimes it pays to search the county(s) that your county you are searching was formed from. This may be true even if you know the year you are looking for is after the county was formed. As an example: Wythe County was formed from Montgomery county in 1790, but a 559 acre Land Grant for Jacob Kitren [Kettering/Kettenring] on the "South Fork of Reed Creek" was recorded as being granted 05 Jun 1815 in Montgomery County (25 years after Wythe County was formed). The South Fork of Reed Creek is in the center of Wythe County and no where near Montgomery County. A search in Montgomery County found the following Land Grants (that were dated after 1790) for Grants and creeks that are within the boundaries of Wythe County: 12 for Grants on the South Fork of Reed Creek . 21 for Grants on Cripple Creek. 74 other Grants referencing Reed Creek. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACE/1021.1.2.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Kathy: I grew up in Tiffin, Ohio & my Uncle Wendell Roe Main lived in Old Fort and later Republic before he passed away about 5 years ago. I don't hear from people in "Winesburg, Ohio" very often. There is a great deal of information on the Mains of Washington & Smyth County, Ohio in the Delaware County, Ohio Public Library and in the Archives of the Delaware County Historical Society. They were Primitive Baptists, so they were affiliated with the Marlborough Primitive Baptist Church on Horseshoe Road, Troy Township, Ohio (Near Ashley). There are tons of them buried in the cemetery there. The original brothers (I believe there were 7 of them) moved to Delaware County around 1815. I've lived in Falmouth (Cape Cod) for the past 5 years, and lived the previous 25 years in Chelmsford, MA, so I don't get back to Delaware County but every 2 or 3 years, but they have wonderful research records there. If you want to learn more about the Mains I'd recommend getting in touch w! ith the Delaware County Historical Society (They're on-line) and finding out all you can as to where the records are and when the Archives/Library are open. Joining the Society is cheap ($15 dollars a year), but it's worth the price. Just down the Road, in Columbus, is the Ohio Historical Society Library, near the Ohio State Fairgrounds. They also have a huge repository of genealogical information. Good Hunting Bob Sherwood

Ileen: I have used this resource before. When I went to the url you gave, I typed a specific name in the BROWSE AN APLHABETICAL LIST box . Using one of my guys as a example, Berry, Thomas -- received a listing of many grants for Thomas Berry. Try Berry, Thomas as an example. Click on the second set of results -- which shows 10 records. In order to actually see the pertinent information, you have to click on the actual number on the extreme left hand side. It's not very intuitive, but that will take you to a detailed description, including the county where the land was located, and then at the top of each detailed description there is a url link to a digital scan of the actual document. Hope this was your question. Carol Vass
