The above re-publication also has 426 pages and includes a surname index where the original did not. (Something to consider when using the above Index (Pub. # 26): I recently noticed that some entries similar to the following -- "NUNLEY, Mary Ann Davis, w/o R. A. NUNLEY, 1851-1926" that are in the High on a Windy Hill (1968), do not have the name "Davis" included in the index for that cemetery. Probably a logical reason for not including the name "Davis" in the surname index is that it could not be determined if it was one of Mary Ann's middle names or her maiden name. But as some of those names are likely to be middle names and others likely to be surnames, some wives maiden names may be overlooked if one relies entirely on the index). - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - High on A Windy Hill-Vol II (Cemeteries of Washington Co.,VA) by Hist. Hello My name is Norman (Mac) McNutt. Call me Mac. I am looking for anyone who may have the book High on a windy Hill. I am looking for locations on the above names. Or if someone can tell me where to by the books. It would be greatly appreciated. Any help would be great. Thank You Mac McNutt
I believe this cemetery is probably located at the headwaters of Little Moccican Creek on Clinch Mountain near what is now called Hidden Valley Road. This road leads to the top of Clinch Mountain and Hidden Valley Lake. Take 19 and Alt. 58 (Porterfield Highway) out of Abingdon, VA. , going N. West, cross North Fork Holston River (new bridge under construction), continue past Poor Valley Road (Brumley Gap Rd. now), near the top of the mountain look for Hidden Valley rd. (Game Preserve sign) on Right. This is where the Nunley and Reynolds families have lived for many years. Many years ago my father and other teenagers used to ride horses up Brumley Creek to the top of the mountain and go to a huge "teetering rock" which would actually teeter when they walked out on it. (Remember the "teetering rock" in Lil' Abner ?) The real reason they rode to the top was not see the rock but the daughters of a man who lived on top of the mountain where the clover fields were located. There is a sixty acre lake on top of the mountain built by a man named Bordwine who also built the road from the end of the old road to the top of the mountain. My uncle worked as a watchman on the project one winter and was isolated up there during times of snow because the road was impassable. When driving up Hidden Valley Road, one can observe optical illusions, house trailers appear to be unlevel, I know they're not, but they sure look like it! There may be "Haints and Spirits" at the cemetery, so be very careful!! G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.
Wrong direction: According to a map on page XIII, Reynolds’ Cemetery is located on or in the vicinity of Route 690 near the Russell County line. Drive North by Northwest (not Northeast) on State Route 1 out of Abingdon ... Bob
The Washington County cemetery book “High on a Windy Hill,” Volume 1, page 33 has a cemetery called “Reynolds Cemetery -- 41A” 22 people are listed for this cemetery, 2 BOWMAN, one BURKE, 2 CAMPBELL, 2 NUNLEY, 13 REYNOLDS, & 2 WISE. The two NUNLEY’s are: Isaac, 6 Jun. 1877 -- 26 Sep. 1954 Lydia R., 4 Aug. 1878 -- 6 Feb. 1954 The two oldest REYNOLDS’ are: W. P., b. 13 Feb 1844 (no other date) Ruth, 9 Dec. 1843 -- 27 Jan 1894, age 50y, 1m, 18d According to a map on page XIII, Reynolds’ Cemetery is located on or in the vicinity of Route 690 near the Russell County line. Drive North by Northeast on State Route 1 out of Abingdon, crossing the North Fork of the Holston River, past the community? of Holston, up Little Moccasin Creek through Moccasin Gap to Route 690 (on the right). It looks like Route 690 goes along the upper part of Little Moccasin Creek. Go to: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=36.785&lon=-82.091 to see a topographical map showing State Route 19, the North Fork of the Holston River, the community? of Holston, & Moccasin Gap. On the left side of the screen where it says “Map Size,” select “large” and click on “Update Map” to enlarge the map. Go to: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=36.81&lon=-82.091 to see the area along State Route 19 north of Moccasin Gap. The intersection of Route 19 and Route 690 is where “Phelps Cem” is located on the map (just south of Moccasin Gap School). Go to: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=36.823&lon=-82.091 to see the area along Route 690. Reynolds Cemetery is shown about half way up Route 690 on the left (but this may not be the “exact” location, just somewhere up Route 690. Go to: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=36.785&lon=-82.09 to see Route 689 between the community? of Holston and Moccasin Gap. Route 689 goes east from Route 19. There are 5 cemeteries north of Route 689, between Route 19 and the first north running road to the east of Route 19 (which may be Route 813). One of the above 5 cemeteies is “Nunley Cemetery -- 52,” (page 36). There are 5 persons listed: BRANCH, Virginia A. NUNLEY, w/o J. G. BRANCH, 16 Dec. 1860 -- 4 Sep. 1909. NUNLEY, Novel D., 19 Mar. 1871 -- 28 Mar. 1905. NUNLEY, R. Alexander, 1847-1913. NUNLEY, Mary Ann DAVIS, w/o R. A. NUNLEY, 1851-1926. LILLY, Mary Ellen NUNLEY, w/o J. H. LILLY, 23 May 1863 -- 8 Apr. 1939. There is also another cemetery, "Nunley Cemetery -- 47," (page 35) on Route 802 a little way west of the community? of Holston. Six people are listed: DAVIS, Charles E., 14 Apr 1831 -- 24 Jan 1894. DAVIS, Jane NUNLEY, w/o Charles E. DAVIS, 6 Jan. 1832 -- 26 Oct 1895. NUNLEY, Hattie F., 25 Feb. 1852 -- 11 May 1919. DUNMAN (3 persons). Go to: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=36.787&lon=-82.1026 to view the area west of Moccasin Gap which shows that Moccasin Gap runs through Clinch Mtn. & is just north of Poor Valley. The above areas are located on the USGS Brumley Quadrangle 7.5 Minute Series Topographic Map. Bob Ford

I am in search of information on Patrick(Patton) Henry Lewis. I know he was born between 1873-1876 and in the 1900 census it says he was born in Virginia. In 1900 he was in Wise County but I have been told he lived in Washington County also. He married Martha Hall who was the daughter of Alexander Hall and Nancy J. Boggs. Patrick and Martha had a large family, my great grandmother was Ethel born in 1903 and was their daughter. If you know of anything that could help me I would apprciate it. I don't even know where he is buried. I do know he died in 1943. Joy _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger!
