"Virginia Land Office Patents and Grants/Northern Neck Grants and Surveys" is the site I was trying to find. I had been there in previous years but couldn't remember how to get there. >> On the old site, one had to sift through a zillion card images. It's much nicer on the new site where you can also search for: - creeks ("Baker* Creek") to find various Land Grants on the creek or on the waters of the creek. - number of acres ("320 acres") such as you might find in a deed, then want to see if a Land Grant exists for the same number of acres. - a particular date ("5 january 1830"), that might be mentioned in a deed as when a Land Grant was issued. - in a particular county ("washington county"). - in a particular area ("south side of the south fork") or ("the forks"). etc. You can also find abstracts of all surveys in WC Survey Book 1 at: http://www.ls.net/~newriver/va/washsurv.htm Correction, the deed book date span on the LDS microfilm should be: 00034370 - Vol. 13-15, 1837-1842 (not 1827-1842). 1. Re: [VAWASHIN] Land records
    2. All VA Patents and Land Grants are available online for viewing or downloading at the State Library of VA website. This includes West Virginia and Kentucky Patents and Land Grants prior to their statehoods. The Patents and Land Grants are in "Tiff" format and if found, can be viewed or downloaded by anyone with the ability to read "Tiff" format. Microsoft Word & WordPerfect can read that format. All Patents and Land Grants required a survey to be done prior to issuance of the Patent or Land Grant. The survey metes and bounds are included in every Patent or Land Grant. Go to: http://ajax.lva.lib.va.us/F/NBQNNH63M7JMY3HJG3696NH23L39EX28F2PYLAKYD23JUN995B -00324?func=file&file_name=find-m-lva01 Then, to find all references to Whitaker in Washington County in the Patents & Land Grants, Click on "Images, Indexes, etc." in the upper right of the window In the next window, type: "washington county" whit*aker in the "Type word or phrase" box (include the quotes). Then scroll down near the bottom of the window and click on the box near the left margin for "Virginia Land Office Patents and Grants/Northern Neck Grants and Surveys" Then click on the "go" button. (Using Whit*aker in the search box, will get all persons in Washington County with the last name of Whitaker or Whittaker. Using "washington county" limits the search to Washington County). The next window that displays will have a list of the hits (if anything is found). I only found 4 Whittaker's (all with Land Grants issued in 1990). (There were 8 hits for Porterfield, the earliest being John Porterfield in 1787). Double clicking on a number near the left margin will bring up another window that has the Patent or Land Grant info including book and page #, number of acres, date of Patent or Land Grant (and at times, location, adjoining neighbors, creeks, rivers, etc.). To view or download the actual Patent or Land Grant images, go to: http://lvaimage.lib.va.us/LONN/LO.html and select the Patent or Land Grant volume/book and then the page number. You can then right click on the page number to "open" the file to view it on the screen or "save target as" to download the Tiff file to your computer. (I download and then get rid of the black margin, etc., from the actual document before printing it). There usually is more than one page # for the Patents & early Land Grants. Patent books are listed first and Land Grant books after the Patents. If the original search does not find anything, you will need to do another click on: "Virginia Land Office Patents and Grants/Northern Neck Grants and Surveys" to re-check the box as the box resets to blank on a "not found" condition. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Washington County Will Books and Deed Books are all available on LDS Microfilm from Will Book 1 and Deed Book 1 up into the 1860's. The books include the survey metes and bounds when given. Jack Hockett is currently writing WC Deed Books starting with Vol. 3 (one book for each deed book). Volumes 3 to 10 are currently for sale. The books do not include the survey metes and bounds. The books have a surname index for only the grantor and grantee. The index is not fully alphabetical by both grantor and grantee surname. Jack Hockett has also recently written WC Will Book 2. Shelby Edwards has abstracted the basic info from WC Deed Book 1 in the "Holston Past Finder," which was a quarterly of the now defunct Holston Territory Genealogy Society, Inc. The deed book abstracts are spread throughout many volumes of the quarterly two abstract pages at a time. Shelby Edwards has also abstracted WC Will Book 1 (in 1984). Volume 2 of Lewis Preston Summers "Annals of Southwest Virginia, 1769-1800," pages 1273-1321, has short abstracts of WC Deed Book 1 from page 1 through page 517 (not abstracted are pages 518 to 558). Vol. 2 has an index for both volumes (on pages 1639-1757). Note that the index is incomplete (there are numerous persons missing from the index). Bob Ford

    3. Is there no other source for land records in Washington County? I have asked before and I was told that they were burned during the Civil War. I am trying to establish a relationship (real proof) that John Porterfield (1751-1832) is the son of John Porterfield (1724-1788). DAR does not accept the genealogy, THE PORTERFIELDS, as proof. The older John's will made in Cumberland Co., PA does not mention his son John. Any help will be appreciated. Annette
