So, your Edward who married Martha Jane Hill could not be my Edward, do I understand your reply correctly that your Edward was buried in the little cemetery that I referenced in my post (about a mile east of the S. Fork of the Holston River and a mile south of Rush Creek)? Of so, there must be some kinship between the two Edwards. There were also Joseph Catcham and Jesse Catchim and Hugh Catchum in that same immediate area around 1775-1805, in addition to Edward, according to land deed records and tax rolls. What do you think?

There are three Opossum Creeks in Virginia; one in Campbell County, one in Grayson County, and one in Hanover County. None, of which, would have been in Washington County in 1782. There are two Possum Creeks in Virginia; one in Scott County and one in Smyth County. The one in Scott County would have been in Washington County in 1782. It is located near Winegar Mill. Go to Mapquest.com and key in Winegar Mill, VA as a location. Zoom in a little and you'll see Possum Creek and where it flows into the Holston. The Piper land joined the land of Rev. Charles Cummings who came to establish the Sinking Spring church at Abingdon. My gggrandfather, Henry Roberts, married Sarah Piper, a widow. I don't know her maiden name. The Piper family probably came from Augusta Co., Va., if you are interested in further research on them. G. Lee Hearl
<< Looking for a location for "Opposum" Creek which was named in a 1782 land grant for my gggg-grandfather. The description stated - in the county of Washington on Opposum Creek a north branch of the North Fork of the Holston River ... >> Opossum and Possum (and the variants) are used interchangeably in land records. There is a Possum Creek in Scott Co., VA that empties into the north side of the North Fork of the Holston River near the TN line and near the junction of Hawkins and Sullivan counties. Scott county would have been a part of Washington county in 1782. Go to the Topozone site at: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=36.59722&lon=-82.60167 to view a USGS Topographic map of the mouth of Possum Creek. There is also a Possum Jaw Creek in Smyth county that empties into Lick Creek (which empties into the north side of the North Fork of the Holston River also, but Possum Jaw Creek is in the eastern part of Smyth county that never was a part of Washington county. Also keep in mind that various creeks may be renamed over time. Bob Ford
