John ROSEBUM was issued a Land Grant on 03 Oct 1817 for 20 acres & 76 square poles on the south side of the South Fork of the Holston River adjoining James CLAWSON, John WRIGHT, and a former survey of said ROSEBUM. [Source: VA Land Office Land Grant Book 67:14]. Wright Branch flows out of the lower west end of Widener Valley and empties into Laurel Creek a little north of Damascus. The book "Famlies of Washington County and Bristol, Virginia, 1776-1996," (1996), have various articles that include info on the ROSENBAUM/ROSENBALM/ROSEBAUM's of WC. On page 213 (family 561 - John LARIMER), is the following comment: "John LARIMER was one of the early landowners in Damascus, Virginia. John ROSENBAUM sold his land to John LARIMER in 1797. John then sold the land to Henry MOCK. LARIMER had the largest share of land grants in the area. He owned what was known as DAMASCUS ..." Page 287 (family 771 - John ROSENBALM Jr.) includes info on the above John "ROSEBAM" that was in the 1810 census. John ROSENBALM Jr. was the son of John ROSENBALM Sr., both of whom (as far as they know) "descended from Bernard ROSENBAUM (born 1695) a German immigrant from the Palatinate ... One of his sons, John Sr. born in 1765, married Catherine SPRAKER in 1787. John changed the spelling of the family name from ROSENBAUM to ROSENBALM, John and Catharine moved to Washington County, Virginia, and brought 400 acres of land on April 18, 1791. They bought 85 more acres on March 1, 1797, on a branch of Laurel Fork called Beaver Pond Fork. John and Catherine had nine children ..." [which matches the 6 males and 3 females in the above 1810 census]. Submitted by: Hazel (TURNER) HOUSER, 330 Aukerman St., Eaton, Ohio 45320. There is nothing in the above article on the 3 daughters of John & Catherine. 18 Apr 1791 -- John McNUTT to John ROZINBUM for 130 pounds, 400 acres in WC. [Source: WC VA Deed Book 1:203]. There was a John ROSENBUM Sr. in the 1820 census of WC VA: 1 male 45 or over, 1 female 45 or over, 2 males 16-25, 2 males 10-15, 1 male under 10 2 females 16-25, 1 female 10-15 4 of the above persons were noted as working in agriculture. Probable neighbors of John ROSENBUM Sr. in 1820 were John and Daniel RAMSEY who were the two lines above John ROSENBUM Sr. [The 1820 census is in alphabetical order, but only by only the first character of the surname, thus the enumeration order of persons whose surname starts with the same letter (in this case the letter "R") is somewhat retained at times (the ROSEBAM's and RAMSEY's were probably neighbors or near neighbors in 1810 as they were on the same page)]. A Mathias ROSENBUM was also in the 1820 census of WC. The person on the line above Mathias was James REED Jr. and the person on the line below Mathias was Joseph RHEA. Bob Ford

BROWN]. John JONES, Jr. was a Baptist minister. He owned land in the Widener Valley which starts north of Damascus and goes in a northeast direction on the south side of the South Fork of the Holston River to (as best as I can determine) near the Smyth/Washington county line. John JONES, Jr. was the first pastor of Rush Creek Primitive Baptist Church, near the intersection of routes 605 and 733 in Widener Valley. Absolom SHADER [SHRADER] was on the last line of page 290 of the 1830 WC VA census. But there were no SHADER/SHRADER's in the 1810, 1820 or 1840 census. There was a Conly COCHRAN in the 1820 & 1830 census of WC and a Connelly COCHRAN in the 1840 census. Connally COCHRAN had an 1837 Land Grant for 3 1/2 acres on both sides of Wolf Creek (Wolf Creek flows into the north side of the South Fork of the Holston River south of Abingdon). There was also a Robert B. COCHRAN that had Land Grants on Wolf Creek in 1850 & 1854. Robert COCKRAM [COCHRAN], age 33, born in VA, occupation: miller, was in the 1850 census with his family (dwelling # 926).
