Surnames: Wheeler Friend Meadows Crabtree Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACE/1431.1.1 Message Board Post: Verna: Glad to hear from you. Correct me if I am wrong on any of this. I have been searching for a document to prove that Ailsey Wheeler (who married David Meadows) is the daughter of Mary "Mollie" Friend and William Wheeler. I haven't found definite proof, but I believe all the Wheelers that moved from Washington County, VA to Rhea Co., TN were related. (Possibly with the exception of Nancy Wheeler who was married to Miller Lee.) I believe your Ailsey was named after Mary Friend's sister Alcy/Alice Friend, who married John Crabtree July 29, 1800 in Washington Co., VA. Alcy/Alice Friend is named as a sister of Mary "Mollie" Friend in an autobiography of Thomas W. Parsons. I have your Ailsey's birth year as 1800/1802 which would make her roughly 18-20 years old for the 1820 Census. (I don't have a source for her birth year, hoping you do, maybe from a later census.) Of all the Wheeler households in the 1820 Census for Washington County, VA, there are three housholds with a female between the ages of 16-26. One of those, the Henry Wheeler household can be ruled out since Henry and his 16-26 year old wife show up again in the 1830 Census 10 years older and with a son. The female in Thomas Wheelers household is surely the wife of Thomas Wheeler living with their 2 young sons. That leaves the Mary (Friend) Wheeler household as the best possibility for a match for Ailsey. Mary had 2 females 16-26 years old living with her. I am very interested if you have any additional info or sources, particularly regarding Ailsey Wheeler's birth year. Ruth

As in the 1820 and 1840 census of Washington County, the 1830 census was in order alphabetically, but only by the first letter of a surname. Thus the five persons above may have lived near each other as the order of the surnames listed under "K" (or any other letter) were probably taken off the enumeration lists for the original census which were in dwelling to dwelling, farm to farm order, etc. There were no other KINDER's in the 1830 WC VA census and none in the 1840 WC VA census. Jacob, Jesse and John KINDER were on the three lines immediately following George KILLINGER on page 216 of the 1820 WC VA census. - - - - - - - - - From "Supplement to Southwest Virginia Tax Assessments, 1815," (1992), by Mary B. Kegley (which included Washington & Wythe Counties): Page 12 - "Jacob KINDER, tract on Walkers Creek, a branch of the Middle Fork of the Holston [River] joining Jacob WILLIAMS, Henry JAYNES(?), and John GOODMAN, 200 acres, having thereon a log "cabbin," barn and stable, valued at $800. [Mary's note:], (Walkers Creek is a branch of the New River, not the Holston)." Page 16 - "George MERSER, one tract with a small farm and grist mill and some log "cabbins," joining John GOODMAN, Thomas SNIDER and KINDER, 47 acres, valued at $150." Page 31 - "Jacob WILLIAMS, one tract on the waters of the Middle Fork of Holston [River], and joining the Mountain Survey, Jacob KINDER, Adam FOX, and Jacob BLESSING, containing 190 acres, having thereon a log "cabbin," and other out log houses, valued at $950." From the surnames mentioned above, it looks like Jacob KINDER may have been living in Smyth County, which was formed from Wythe County in 1832. There were KINDER's in the 1840 census of Smyth County on page 397 and on pages 168A, 194A and 194B of the 1850 census. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has a category called "Local Postal History." For example, I found the dates for a postmaster of a tiny company town in California in Microfilm Publication M841 (145 rolls of microfilm arranged by state, county, post office/date of establishment).
