KY census. You can see it at usgenweb for Casey Co. KY. I actually think he was a Luck. The spelling is Loocke. Have you seen the website about the Rev. Thomas Locke from VA? As far as I know, I have no Lockes in my line. This Thomas Loocke/Locke was living next door to George White in 1810. George's widow was Jane Unk when he died in 1824. I thought this Jane might be related to neighbor Loocke/Locke. Shari Horton

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACE/1479.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I consulted my own transcribed census records and I do not show a Thomas Lock(e) in the Casey County Ky census, and I consulted my database and do not find Lock(e)'s living in Casey County for any date. I am not saying he isn't a Lock(e), I am just saying I have no record of it. Loocke is a typical spelling error in the old records, I will have to refer to this 1810 record and see what I make of it. Because of my vast interest in Virginia and Kentucky Lock(e)'s, if Thomas Lock(e) is in fact a Lock(e), I have over looked him. When I have a man who I question the spelling of his surname in one census, I try to find him in other census records to see what surname he is listed as under the other census records. So because this Thomas isn't listed on my transcribed census records, at the time I must have concluded he wasn't a Lock(e), that he was of another surname. But I will go back to the 1810 census soon and double check. Before we mention any more Lock(e)'s, lets try to determine if Thomas is one or not. I think this is the Thomas Locke who went on to become quite famous. There is a Thomas Locke website about him. You might try a Google search for it. Also, several people mentioned in George White will in Casey Co. KY came out of Lunenburg Co. VA. After doing some research, I am wondering if this Thomas Loocke in Casey Co. KY was actually Thomas Luck or a variation of Lusk. Some of the things people have given me just do not add up. Shari

Many mentioned in George's will came out of Lunenburg Co. VA to Casey-Lincoln-Mercer Co. KY. Casey formed from Lincoln Co. in 1807. Aaron Lewis line from Anson Co. Am wondering if Hezekiah was same Hezekiah who married Susan Jackman in Mercer Co. KY abt. 1809--and removed to Howard Co. MO. Those mentioned in will of George White were Thomas Hutchings/Hutchinson and Jacob JohnsonJohnston. The 2 spellings of surnames appeared as Hutchings and Hutchinson in the same will of George White. 1. Re: [VAWASHIN] Hutton/Carmony in Smyth/Wythe/Washington Co., VA
    2. Michael CORMANY (son of John CORMANY and Elizabeth COOK) married Mary HUTTON on 23 Jan 1856. As best as I can determine the above John CORMANY was probably the son of Michael CORMANY (who was the son of Michael CORMANY and Barbary/ Barbara ROUSH/REUSCH). And the Michael CORMANY who married Barbara ROUSH/REUSCH was Michael Jr., son of Michael CORMANY Sr. and his wife, Catharine MEYER I ....... Michael CORMANY Sr. and Catharine MEYER. II ...... Michael CORMANY Jr. and Barbary/ Barbara ROUSH/REUSCH. III ..... John CORMANY and Elizabeth COOK. IV ..... Michael CORMANY and his two wives (1) Sarah HUTTON and (2) Mary HUTTON. In "Smyth County Marriages, 1832-1850" page 17, is a note for Sarah HUTTON: "(alias McCALL)" which probably means Sarah HUTTON was previously married and her maiden name was McCALL. Michael CORMANY Jr.’s oldest child seems to have been John thus John may have been born soon after Michael Jr. and Barbara were married on 24 Feb 1795 in Wythe County. John would have been old enough to have married and had a son Michael (who was born about 1820). John was named first in his father’s 1852 will (Wythe Co., VA Will Book 2:351). Also, John’s sister, Lucretia (CORMANY) CASSELL, widow of Joseph CASSELL, died without children and Lucretia’s mother and father died before her, so Lucretia’s siblings were her heirs. Mary KEGLEY ("Early Adventures on the Western Waters," Volume V, (2004), pages 230-231) wrote that a chancery lawsuit found in the basement of the Wythe County Courthouse (Wythe County Chancery, Joseph JOHNSON et als vs. Martin S. STEFFEY, administrators, 1879-35) names Lucretia’s heirs, John being first named of Lucretia’s 11 heirs. Quite a few times in wills and court cases, etc., the first named child will be the oldest child. Michael CORMANY Sr. also had a son John, but John married Caty BAUGH on 15 Mar 1804. [KEGLEY, page 231]. One thing that has not been resolved is that you noted that Mary HUTTON who married Michael CORMANY on 23 Jan 1856 was "born about 1819." The marriage record in Jack HOCKETT’s book has Mary HUTTON as age 37, thus born about 1819 too. But in the 1850 census of Smyth County, the Mary that was the daughter of the James and Elizabeth HUTTON on page 215B of the census was age 20, thus born about 1830 -- a difference of about 10 years. So, either the marriage record age was wrong or transcribed wrong or this Mary HUTTON was not the Mary that married Michael CORMANY. Michael and Mary are not in the 1860 census of Smyth County and I do not have access to the 1860 census of Lee County, thus I have not been able to resolve the age problem. I did find one other Mary HUTTON (age 23) in the 1850 Smyth County census that would have been born about 1827, but she was living with Abram HUTTON (age 26). (Abraham HUTTON and Mary SLEMP were married 15 Feb 1847 in Smyth Co., VA, [Smyth County Marriages, 1832-1850, page 27] ). Smyth Co., VA Deed Book 1:388-390 -- 13 Sep 1834 -- Elizabeth SNAVELY et al (to) Barbary WASSUM, 86 acres in Smyth County on the waters of the Middle Fork of the Holston River. Leonard HUTTON and Joseph ADKINS were adjoining neighbors on the north of the 86 acre tract and Michael CORMANY was an adjoining neighbor on the southwest part of the 86 acres. Smyth Co., VA Deed Book 1:376-378 -- 22 Jan 1835 -- Henry & Barbary WASSUM (to) Dixon & James HUTTON, 81 and a half acres [adjoining the western boundary line of the above 86 acre tract. Dixon and James were sons of Leonard HUTTON]. -------------------------------------------------- (1) Mount Airy - Michael CORMANY Sr. home When Wythe County, Virginia, was created in 1790, the present day town of Rural Retreat, Virginia, did not exist, but was the farm and orchard lands of Michael CORMANY, Sr. Long before the formation of Rural Retreat, Virginia, (some 40 years give or take) the old town of Mount Airy was formed on the old stage road a bit west of the present town of Rural Retreat. A fairly large tract of land (some 250 acres) east of present day Rural Retreat proper, remained in the ownership of Peter CORMANY, a son of Michael. These lands became the lands of Joal CORMANY, Peter's son, who married a sister of Solomon BUCK, and would remain in the CORMANY family until the early 1900's. 2. Michael CORMANY, age 36, widower, b. Wythe Co., VA (son of John CORMANY & Elizabeth COOK) married Mary HUTTON, age 37, b. Wythe Co., VA (dau. of James HUTTON & Elizabeth PHILLIPS) on 23 Jan 1856. [Source: "1851-1891 Marriages & 1860 Census of Smyth County, Virginia," (1999), by Thomas Jack HOCKETT & Shelia Steele HUNT, page 40]. Michael CORMANY married 1st to Sarah HUTTON on 17 Aug 1840. [Source: "Smyth County Marriages, 1832 - 1850," (1984), by John VOGT & T. William KETHLEY, Jr. James & ELizabeth (PHILLIPS) HUTTON and 3 of their children are on page 215B and the 1st line of page 216A of the 1850 Census of Smyth Co., VA. James HUTTON was the son of Leonard HUTTON (son of John HUTTON & Jane DICKSON) and his 1st wife, Martha McCALL (dau. of Thomas & Agnes McCALL). Leonard & Martha were married in WC VA on 31 Oct 1793 (by Rev. Charles CUMMINGS). Leonard and his 2nd wife, Nancy BAUGH, were married in WC VA on 17 Nov 1818 (by Rev. John JONES Jr.). [Source: "The Marriages of Washington County, Virginia, 1781 - 1853," (1993), by D.E. BROWN, pages 26 & 29]. John HUTTON was the son of Edward & Eleanor HUTTON of York (now Adams) County and before that, Chester Co., PA. The HATTON's/HUTTON's were from Huntington & Tyrone Townships, York (now Adams) Co., PA. John HUTTON came to WC VA in the late 1700's and settled in the upper Baker Creek (now called Hutton Creek) area. [WC Survey Book 1:360, WC DB1:76-77, VA Land Grant Book 28:164-165 & 169-170]. Leonard HUTTON owned land north of the Middle Fork of the Holston River between Cedar Creek and Little Holston Creek (now called Hall's Creek and a short portion near the mouth that is called Byar's Creek). [WC Deed Book 2:11-12]. Also see WC DB 4:388-389 for proof of James HUTTON being the son of Leonard HUTTON. Thomas & Agnes McCALL also lived in Tyrone Township. They moved to WC VA and in 1795, bought a 215 acre tract in the Forks (between the Middle Fork and the South Fork of the Holston River). [WC Deed Book 1:405]. Leonard HUTTON moved to the area east of Marion, VA before Smyth County was formed. The HUTTON's lived on Hutton Branch just east of Marion and areas east of Hutton Branch which put Leonard in Wythe County until Smyth County was formed from WC & Wythe Counties in 1832. According to Mary KEGLEY, Michael CORMANY, Sr. "settled on the headwaters of the South Fork of Reed Creek, and entered his land on a Treasury Warrant in 1782, and had 300 acres surveyed the spring of 1783 for which he received the grant on August 2, 1796." [VA Land Grant Book 35:467-468. "Early Adventures on the Western Waters," Volume V, (2004), by Mary B. KEGLEY, pages 229-233]. The Land Grant was granted to Michael KERMANY and is filed under Montgomery Co., VA even though Wythe County was formed in 1790 and the tract was no where near Montgomery County. (This is quite a common occurance). The above Michael CORMANY Sr. is most likely the ancestor of your Michael CARMONY who was born about 1820. My research follows: (Johann) Michael KARMENIE was born 26 Jul 1745 in Edenkoben, Palatinate, Germany. He was christened in Edenkoben Catholic Church. He married Catharine MEYER on 21 Jun 1772 at Hill Lutheran/Reformed Church, near Annville, Lancaster (now Lebanon) Co., PA. One of Michael & Catharine's sons was baptized at Hill Church (John George, baptized 15 Oct 1775, sponsors were George & Elizabeth WAMPSTER). (Johann) Michael was the son of Johanes (CARMIER/KARMINE) KARMENIE who married Maria Catharina KRAUSS on 16 Aug 1729 at the Catholic Church in Edenkoben, Palatinate, Germany. Johanes died in 1778 in what is now Lebanon Co., PA. His surviving widow was named Anna Maria. Maria Catharina's father was Johann Henrich KRAUS. Her church affiliation was Reformed (Calvinist). Johanes KARMENIE's father was Johanes CARMIER. Besides Michael, Johanes & Maria Catharina had 3 other known sons: (1) Anthony (Antonius), b. 03 Mar 1730 in Edenkoben, Palatinate, Germany, christened in Edenkoben Catholic Church, d. Aug 1813. He married Anna Christina HETZLER (dau. of Joh. George HETZLER) on 27 Feb 1758 in Hill Church, near Annville (by Rev. John Casper STOEVER). She was born 20 Apr 1732 and died in March 1814. Both are buried at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Campbellstown, Lebanon Co., PA. Four known children. (2) Joseph, b. 22 Dec 1733 in Edenkoben, christened in Edenkoben Catholic Church on 01 Dec 1734, d. 08 May 1807 in what is now Lebanon Co., PA. He married Eve "Eva" FREY (dau. of Andrew & Eve FREY) in 1758. Eve was born 16 Oct 1738 in the Kingdom of Wurtemberg, Germany and died 21 May 1805. She is buried at Bindnagle Church, Lebanon Co., PA. Joseph is probably buried there too. 10 children, 8 of whom were living when Joseph passed away. Joseph & Eve resided in Londonderry Township in what is now Lebanon Co., PA (3) John (Johannes), b. 04 Mar 1737 in Edenkoben, Palatinate, Germany, christened in Edenkoben Catholic Church, d. in 1781. He married Juliana ____ before 1762. They resided in what is now Lebanon Co., PA. Their church affiliation was Evangelical Lutheran. 10 children. (John & Juliana are my ancestors). [Sources: Egle's Notes & Queries; Records of Hill Church near Annville, Lebanon Co., PA (pages 244, 304); Evangelical Lutheran Church Congregation, Campbellstown, Lebanon Co., PA; D.A.R. Patriot index, page 377; L. Bert NYE, Jr., Wilkesboro, NC; records of Bindnagle Church near Palmyra, Lebanon Co., PA; Lloyd ZEAGER, Lancaster Co., PA; various other researchers]. Other (mis)spellings for CARMIER/KARMENIE/CORMANY are: CARMANY, CARMENE, CARMANE, CARMINI, CARMINIE, CARMENY, CARMENEY, CARMANEY, CARMINAY, CARMONE, CARMONY, CARMANA, CORMANY, CORMENY, CORMANCY, CORMANEY, CORMINAY, CORMONEY, KARMENIE, KARAMY, KARMANEY, KARMANY, KARMENI, KARMENY, KARMANIN, KARMINI, KARMONY, KARMENE, KERMANY, KERMONY, KORMANY ... The original name was CARMIER and was later changed to KARMINE. Bob Ford

They married in Smyth Co., VA on 23 Jan 1856. It's likely both were born in that area of eastern Washington Co./western Wythe Co. that later became Smyth Co. Their descendants are later found in Lee Co., VA, so it's possible that this couple later relocated there. Any additional information on these two or their ancestors would be greatly appreciated.
