    2. "Power of Attorney" in many cases was also granted to a non-attorney (relative, neighbor, friend, etc.) that was someone to be trusted and could more than likely read and write and had some knowledge of the transaction he or she was empowered with or could work with someone with that knowledge. "Among the first of the Jersey colonist to locate in York County was James PETIT, whose ancestor was one of the early Huguenot refugees to New Jersey. As early as 1740 James possessed a considerable estate on the Conewago. He died in 1771 at an advanced age." [Source: George Prowell’s History of York Co., PA with Index in 3 Volumes (1907), reprint, page 140]. On 07 Apr 1749 James and Thomas PETIT signed a road petition and the Court order the road to be opened from "McAllister’s mill on the Bermudian Creek to the town of York." This route is the one at present known (in 1907) as the "Shippensburg road." The road viewers (of which there were six) included James PETIT. 2. Seeking info regarding circumstances or cause of death for the children of Josesh Straus Price (1853-1910) and Susan Dorcas Duncan Price (1853-1914). To my knowledge, this couple had six boys, four are curious to me..... Ransom Price, b. 1878, d. 1909, buried Perdue Cem. He married Mary Hagy. After his death, his oldest son was taken in by his wife's brother and Ransom's youngest son was raised by his brother, John Price. What happened to Mary? Did she die as well? Roy Price, b. 1881, d. 1911, buried Perdue Cem. Joseph Price willed everything to Roy and Susan, and Roy's share would go to the brothers upon his death. This makes me believe Roy was disabled in some way.... Edward 'Eddy' Price, b. 1889, d. 1917, Perdue Cem. He married Florence Poole of Glade Spring. They had a boy, Bordy. IF he joined the army, he must have died Stateside. Florence and Bordy are found in Glade Spring in 1920, living with her father Wiley Poole. After this, I've found no record. Fredrick Price, b. sept 1891, d. 15 dec 1891. Still trying to document this. ___________________________________________________ Try the New Netscape Mail Today! 1. Re: [VAWASHIN] Re: Ebing Springs
    2. Survey dated 29 Aug 1781 made for Adam MORROW for 400 acres -- Commissioners Certificate ... located between the Middle Fork & South Fork of the Holston River ... beginning at the head of a spring, a corner to Samuel KITHCART’s land ... in a valley ... on Samuel ROBINSON’s land ... on BOWLES’ line ... Adam MORROW, assignee of Joseph POSEY, assignee of John KELLEY, assignee of Robert KICKHAM ... 400 acres ... on the waters of the South Fork of the Holston River, including improvements ... actual settlement made in 1773. [WC Survey Book 1:228]. Adam MORROW was granted a Land Grant on the same 400 acres above on 12 Jul 1785. [Source: VA Land Grant Book Q:354-355]. Note that one mete and bound in the Land Grant is incorrect, (S15E 32 poles) should be corrected to (N15E 32 poles). The correction can be verified by the surveys for three of Adam’s neighbor’s Land Grants. (The length of a pole is 16.5 feet). Adam MORROW’s adjoining neighbors that also had Land Grants were: Samuel KITHCART on the northwest, Thomas EDMUNDSON Jr. on the southwest, David & Samuel ROBINSON on the south, John BOLWES on the southeast, Samuel ROBINSON on the south Abraham LEFAVER on the northeast Go to: http://lvaimage.lib.va.us/LONN/LO.html to download, print and/or view copies of the two pages for Adam’s 400 acre Land Grant. Skip past the list of Patent volumes to get to the list of Land Grant volumes (some of the Patent books have the same page #’s as the Land Grant books). David & Samuel ROBINSON’s survey for their 230 acre Land Grant began at 2 white oaks on the bank of the South Fork of the Holston River. The 2 white oaks on the bank of the SFHR were about 2,000 feet southeast of Adam MORROW’s southernmost boundary corner. Adam’s tract was about 5,000 feet wide and 4,500 feet long at it’s widest points. If Adam were to have walked or rode in a straight line to the old 1700's Ebbing Spring Church, he would have had to walk in a northwest direction across the Land Grant tracts of Samuel KITHCART, John KELLEY/KELLY, and Patrick WATSON. WATSON’s upper tract boundary was on the south side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River and across the river from old Ebbing Springs Church’s original 122 acre survey. Which brings up a clarification: the later Ebbing Spring Church building on Route 91 (that isn’t Ebbing Spring Church any longer) is not on or near the old 122 acre Ebbing Spring Church Congregation tract of the late 1700's. That 122 acre tract is about 2 miles farther eastward up the Middle Fork of the Holston River. The 122 acres was located on the north side of the MFHR just east of Price Hill. When going up the MFHR just before coming to the 122 acre tract there is a section of the river that goes straight north. Samuel EDMISTON/EDMONDSON was granted a narrow 7 acre Land Grant in 1802 along this straight stretch (1,617 feet) and then along part of the bend of the river for another 891 feet, as it starts to gradually bend in an easterly direction. The 122 acre tract probably bordered on the upper part of this bend and somewhat beyond. From this boundary area along the river, the 122 acre tract continued inland in a northwest direction. Samuel EDMISTON’s 7 acre tract was long and slim and fit between Col. Wm. EDMONDSON’s 600 acre Land Grant on the west and a tract belonging to James TODD on the east. There is a writeup on Col. Wm. EDMONDSON in The Historical Society of Washington County, VA Publication Series II, No. 16, May 1979, page 14, where it discusses the Colonel’s land in the area of Price’s Bridge (which is just south of Price Hill). Price’s bridge crosses the above north/south straight stretch of the MFHR. And the Colonel’s 600 acre tract bordered the southwestern boundary line of the 122 acre Ebbing Spring Church tract. The first topographic map link that follows shows the Ebbing Spring Church building site on Route 91 on the lower right where the "newer" Ebbing Spring Church once existed. The old 1700's Ebbing Spring Church 122 acre tract was located in the upper right corner east of Price Hill and above the north/south straight stretch of the MFHR and on the north side of the Middle Fork as it bends eastward. http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=36.7526&lon=-81.7654 The second topographic map link now shows the 122 acre church tract in the upper left corner. Look closely at the little short stream (about half an inch long on the map) that flows into the MFHR just right of the word "Middle" in the upper left corner. There is what looks like a spring that is the head waters of that short stream. I would sure like to find out if anyone knows if that spring might be Ebbing Spring or just a coincidence. Just to the right of center on the map near Routes 608 and 736 is Kelly Chapel. Adam MORROW’s 400 acre tract was in this area, probably just to the east of Kelly Chapel. http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=36.7526&lon=-81.7283 Kelley’s Chapel -- "In 1772 a Presbyterian church was founded at Ebbing Springs ... In 1792, this church was moved to Old Glade Springs, and the Presbyterians, who had previously worshiped at Ebbing Springs Church moved their membership to Old Glade, and the Methodists worshiped in the different homes of the community. These meetings were called "class meetings," and were held once a month on Wednesday nights ... Later, the services were held in an old log school house, which stood in the corner of the cemetery. In 1857, May 12, subscriptions for a meeting house near Kelly’s School House, were taken ... August 28. 1857, Andrew McKEE and wife, Mary Jane deeded the land for the Kelly ’s Chapel Church ... James E. KELLY gave the land where the cemetery is now ..." [Submitted by: George W. KELLEY, Jr., 35480 Kelly’s Chapel Road, Glade Spring, VA 34340 ("Families of Washington County and Bristol, Virginia, 1776-1996," page 59)]. On 10 Mar 1788, Adam MORROW & Isabella his wife sold a tract situated between the Middle and South Forks of the Holston River - to - Doherty ALLEN for 225 pounds. The amount of acreage was not given, but its MORROW’s 400 acre tract (or at least part of it). Bounds: Beginning at the head of a spring, corner to Samuel KITHCART’s land ... on Samuel ROBINSON’s line ... [WC Deed Book 1:78 (and possibly page 79)]. It looks like Adam & Isabella MORROW had the 1778 church letter because they had or were in the process of moving about 1778 and the letter may have been to present to their new church. In the 1815 Tax Assessments for WC, George ALLEN was taxed on 180 acres and James ALLEN, an adjoining neighbor, was taxed on 150 acres. Because of their surrounding neighbors, George and James may have owned part of the 400 acres Adam MORROW sold to Doherty ALLEN (or at least land close by). Gordon ARONHIME had a card with a bit of info on Adam MORROW that you can view at the Library of VA website at: http://lvaimage.lib.va.us/cgi-bin/drawerIII/disk8/CC/AR/003/m0038/?105 Bob Ford

James THOMPSON’s elongated 2,600 acre "Killmacknonan" tract that extended from the old 122 acre original Ebbing Spring church tract (not to be confused with the Ebbing Spring Church on Route 91) eastward across Hutton Creek (old Baker Creek), northeastward up the Middle Fork of the Holston River and northward to Walker Mountain. The 160 acres was located somewhere east of Hutton Creek (old Baker Creek), south of Route 11 & U.S. 81, and north of the Middle Fork of the Holston River. THOMPSON bordered STARNS’ western and southern boundary lines. Joseph MEEK’s 400 acre tract (that he bought from Jonathan & Hannah CUNNINGHAM on 01 Oct 1787) bordered STARNS’ 160 acres on the north. Zachariah SHUGART was issued a 53 acre Land Grant on the eastern border of the 160 acres on 26 Aug 1815. The survey that was done earlier for the Land Grant still shows "CARTER" as the adjoining neighbor on the east (VA Land Grant Book 65:351-352). 3. Hi listers, I'm new to the list. I recently found that a gggrandfather of mine was said to have been born in Bristol TN, but our family Bible says he was born in VA. Since Bristol is on the border I was wondering if his family may be from Washington Co VA rather than Sullivan Co. TN. His name is James M. CROSS born about 1818. I'm looking for his parents and siblings if there are any. When he went to Carter Co. TN I'm not sure, his marriage to Lovinia BOWERS was in 1841, he was a farmer. I have all the family information in Carter Co. His wife's family were early settlers there. Apparently, he used the name of James M. SMITH in Carter Co., yet it is our understanding his surname was CROSS. Is anyone familiar with this family? Joan Williams, Miami, FL.

Surnames: Gill / Pettit Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACE/1493 Message Board Post: I am looking for researchers working on the Gill/Pettit lines and any information on Gabriel Gill and Rebecca Pettit. Facts: Thomas Pettit (York Co., PA) mentions his daughter Rebecca who married Gabriel Gill. Through review of the court papers "Grever vs. Gill" we find that Rebecca (wife of Gabriel Gill) died before October 1807 in Washington Co., VA. My ancestor, Thomas Gill, was most likely born in Maryland ca: 1885-90. (via census records that for his sons Nehemiah and John) The Klechner shown in the lawsuit is most likely Adam Clackner who married Rebecca Gill (a daughter) in Baltimore MD 1798. Throughout the documents, we find this name spelled Kleckner, Klackner, and Kelchner but in all cases, he and his wife are identified as "no inhabitant" of the County and/or State. Further, in 1803, letters of Administration are issued to Adam Clackner for the Estate of Gabriel Gill in Baltimore MD. Clearly, Gabriel still had property in Maryland when he contracted to buy property in Washington Co., VA. Thomas being too young, Adam Clackner was executor in Maryland and David Carter and Rebecca Gill (the widow) were executors in VA. Time line. 1780-1784 Mary Gill is born 1785-1790 Thomas Gill is born 3/12/1789 Thomas Pettit's will identifies daughter Rebecca as wife of Gabriel Gill. 1794 Gabriel Gill, brick layer, bought land in Baltimore, MD 1796 Gabriel Gill, Brick Layer in Baltimore, MD Directory 1797 Gabriel Gill shown in Lease deal in Baltimore, MD 1798 Gabriel Gill shown on Maryland Tax List 12/23/1798 Rebecca Gill marries Adam Clackner, Baltimore, MD 1799 Gabriel Gill, Brick Layer in Baltimore, MD Directory 1799-1800 Gabriel Gill shown on Maryland Tax list 1800 Gabriel Gill, Brick Layer in Baltimore, MD Directory 7/2/1801 Mary Gill marries David Carter in Washington Co., VA 4/13/1802 Gabriel Gill buys land in Washington Co., VA from Phillip Grever 8/1803 Letters of Administration are issued to Adam Clackner et al 8/26/1806 Grever files claim to recover from the estate of Gabriel Gill 9/17/1806 Nancy Gill marries Hugh Carrick 10/1807 Rebecca Gill (the wife) shown as dead on the legal documents and "Nancy Gill now Nancy Carrick" 1/6/1814 Thomas Gill marries Grace Williams Conclusions: Gabrel Gill died 1802 or 1803 in Washington Co., VA after moving there in or around 1801 and buying property in 1802. He married Rebecca Pettit in Baltimore Co., MD or York Co., PA. She died ca: 1807 in Washington Co., VA Their children were: Mary Gill who married David Carter Thomas Gill who married Grace Williams Nancy Gill who married Hugh Carrick Rebecca Gill who married Adam Clackner Mariah Gill who married James Allen I have made some small "leaps of faith" 1. Gabriel and Rebecca Pettit. Few Gabriel Gills are found. Two of them married to Rebeccas would be unlikely. 2. Thomas being born in Maryland. Only the census records for his sons show it. 3. The data on Clackner. Spelling and location. Two Gabriels shown dying in the same period with Kleckner/Clackner involved have to be the same guy. All comment and input would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Re: [VAWASHIN] Re: Ebing Springs
    2. The original or first Ebbing Spring church is mentioned in Lewis Preston Summers’ "History of Southwest Virginia and Washington County," on pages 138-139: "... two congregations of Presbyterians had organized in the county -- one at Sinking Spring (now Abingdon) and another at Ebbing Spring, on the Middle Fork of the Holston river, near the James BYARS farm; and in the month of April 1773, Samuel EDMISTON was commissioned by the two congregations above mentioned to present a call to the Rev. Charles CUMMINGS ... This call was reduced to writing and signed by the members of the Sinking Spring and Ebbing Spring congregations ... " The early Ebbing Spring church congregation moved to Glade Spring Presbyterian church about two years prior to Edward CRAWFORD becoming the 3rd pastor of the church. (Rev. Thomas Brown CRAIGHEAD was the 2nd pastor). Rev. CRAWFORD first appears in the marriage registers in 1794, the same year the Lexington Presbytery dismissed him. [Source: "The Marriages of Washington County, Virginia, 1781 - 1853," by D.E. BROWN, page 74]. - - - - - - - - - - A survey for 122 acres was made on 06 May 1788 for the Ebbing Spring Congregation Trustees. The survey was made for William EDMONDSON and James DYSART, acting Trustees, by virtue of a Virginia Land Office Treasury Warrant no. 1984. [Source: Washington County Survey Book 1:382]. James THOMPSON’s adjoining tract on the east in 1788 was originally a 20 Jun 1753 Patent granted to James PATTON that contained 2,600 acres at a place called "Killmacknonan" on both sides of the Middle Fork of the Indian (now Holston) River in Augusta (now Washington and Smyth Counties) [Source: VA Patent Book 32:181-184]. Philip GREEVER’S 400 acre tract also adjoined the above 122 acres on the north. GREEVER’s tract was surveyed on 05 Jun 1782 [Source: WC Survey Book 1:35]. Col. William EDMONDSTON’s [also EDMISTON or EDMONDSON] 600 acre tract adjoined the above 122 acres on it’s southwest boundary line. One survey made for EDMONDSTON’s tract was dated 09 May 1801 [Source: WC Survey Book 2:220]. - - - - - - - - - - By virtue of a VA Land Office Treasury Warrant no. 1984, there was granted by the Commonwealth of VA unto John SCOTT, assignee of William EDMISTON, Samuel EDMISTON, and James DYSART, acting Trustees of the Ebbing Spring Congregation, a tract containing 122 acres by survey dated 06 May 1788. The Land Grant was dated 29 Sep 1796. [Source: VA Land Grants Book 35:728-729]. Deed dated 19 Oct 1807 from David CLARK and Ann SCOTT [widow of John(?)] to Robert BUCHANAN, all of WC VA, for $686.66, a tract of land containing 116 acres lying on the north side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River, being a tract of land whereon the said CLARK now liveth. Deed ordered to be recorded 20 Oct 1807. [Source: WC Deed Book 3:611-612]. The above 116 acre tract was part of the 122 acre tract. Ann SCOTT had deeded the other 6 acres (of the 122 acre tract) to her son Andrew SCOTT on 01 Jan 1804, "in consideration of the natural love and affection I bear to Andrew SCOTT," for one dollar -- a tract of land containing 6 acres lying on the north side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River, being part of the tract of land whereon the said Ann SCOTT now liveth. Witnesses: John STEWART, Mathew RYBURN, and Thomas EDMISTON. Deed ordered to be recorded 17 Jan 1804. Two bo undary lines of the 6 acre tract were James THOMPSON and "down the several courses of the Middle Fork of the Holston River" for 38 poles. [Source: WC Deed Book 3:118-119]. The 6 acre tract was located at the southeast corner of the 122 acre tract. A deed dated 12 May 1816 from Robert BUCHANAN to Mathew RYBURN and William BEATIE, Trustees for the Ebbing Spring graveyard -- for ten dollars -- a tract of land containing 48 poles and eighty seven links, lying on the north side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River, being a part of the tract of land whereon the said Robert BUCHANAN now liveth. Bounds: Beginning at a stone on the west side of the gate, N72W 3 poles & 15 links to a stone, N2W 5 poles & 13 links to a stone, N89E 7 poles & 5 links to a stone, S26E 4 poles & 5 links to a stone, and S63W 6 poles & 14 links to the beginning. [Source: WC Deed Book 6:298-299]. The area of the 5 sided tract is approximately 3 tenths of an acre and the gate was at the southern most point of the tract. Note: the deed book has the deed date as 12 May 1818, but 1818 is underlined as an error on page 298 as the deed was actually recorded in 1816 (as was a prior unrelated deed also on page 298).
