    2. Judy writes: << Thomas C. HUTTON is listed as 51 in the 1850 Census, 62 in the 1860 Census, and 73 in the 1870 Census. This fits with the earlier census records. According to census records he would have been in the 10 through 15 age category on the 1810 Census. For the reasons you stated Edward, James and Dickson Hutton could not have fathered Thomas C. Could Leonard still could be a possibility as well as John. In the 1810 Census only Leonard has a male in the 10 through 15 category. I know that just because there is no male in the John household in the 10 thru 15 category does not mean he wasn't the father to Thomas, as children often where living with another family for a number of reasons, and wouldn't show up with their own family. My question is can I consider both John and Leonard possible fathers of Thomas C. or are there circumstances that would omit Leonard of which I am unaware. Thanks for any conjecture on your part, >> You have a valid point. I know of nothing at this time that would cause Thomas C. not to be considered as a possible son of Leonard. In fact as you pointed out, Martha’s father was "Thomas" McCALL and Leonard & Martha’s 1810 census has a male Thomas’ age, but John & Mary Ann’s census does not. I went back through some of the information on Leonard HUTTON from Diane Costello and others. Leonard married Martha McCALL in 1793. Their six known sons were John (born about 1794), James (born about 1804), Dixon (born about 1811), Edward (born 26 Dec 1812), Wm.(born about 1813) & Robert (born about 1814). (Wm. being the Wm. that married Eliza HILL in 1834). There were four female children, Martha (married 1840) and three other unknown females that were born before 1810. 1810 census of WC VA: Males: Leonard HUTTON (26-44), John (16-25), 1 unknown (10-15), James and 2 unknowns (under 10). Females: Martha (26-44), 1 unknown (10-15), 2 unknowns (under 10). Thus there was one unknown male born between 1795 -1800 and 2 unknown males born between 1800 - 1810 in Leonard and Martha’s household in 1810. Leonard HUTTON married Nancy BAUGH on 17 Nov 1818 after Martha died. He was in the Wythe County 1830 census with 17 people in his household. Leonard had moved to that part of Wythe Co. that became the eastern part of Smyth Co. when Smyth Co. was formed in 1832. All of Leonard’s known male children (which does not include the 3 unknown males in his household in 1810) were in the 1850 census of Smyth County. They were: John, James, Dixon, Edward, Wm. and Robert (by Leonard and Martha). David, Abraham, Leonard and Mahlon (by Leonard and Nancy). There was no adult male named Thomas HUTTON in the 1850 census of Smyth County. That keeps open the possiblility that Leonard & Martha had Thomas C. around 1798. It would be normal that Martha might want to name one of her sons after her father, Thomas McCALL, but I also find it interesting that Leonard did not name one of his sons Leonard until about 1825, 32 years or so after he married the first time. One thought is that one or more of his earlier children may have passed away and one of those may have been named Leonard. (Thomas McCALL and his family and his adult son, John also moved from Tyrone Township, York (now Adams) Co., PA to WC VA. John McCALL owned various tracts in the Baker Creek area, some of which bordered the HUTTON’s. Thomas McCALL bought land in the Forks area between the M.F & S.F. of the Holston River where his tract bordered or was near others from Tyrone Township: James SPEER, John REID, John ORR, and Elijah MICKLE ). - - - - - - - - - << I know that just because there is no male in the John household in the 10 thru 15 category does not mean he wasn't the father to Thomas, as children often where living with another family for a number of reasons, and wouldn't show up with their own family. >> Right. My gg g/f Gilman FORD had some of his sons spread all over during the 1850 census of Mercer Co., NJ. Only the youngest two children were enumerated with him. Son George (age 11) was living with Aaron COLEMAN, son Gideon (age 14) was with John S. WEST, sons GILMAN (age 19) and Samuel (26) were with Eleanor VAN CLEVE, and son James (age about 17) could not be found in the census. They were all later living in Jersey Co., IL except Samuel. The only reason I know about James is a short death notice in a Jersey County newspaper in 1872 that stated that he was a brother of George FORD. James (a bricklayer) was living with George in the 1870 census of Jersey County, but I did not know how he was connected to the family until I found his newpaper death notice. Those two records are all the records I have ever found about James. Did Thomas C. HUTTON name one of his children Leonard? One thing that had me leaning towards John & Mary Ann (CUNNINGHAM) HUTTON as being Thomas C. HUTTON’s parents is his middle initial. Mary Ann’s father was Wm. CUNNINGHAM and it seems likely (but no solid proof) that the Wm. HUTTON that married Eleanor? HAYTER was her son. So did Mary Ann name her first born son Wm. after her father. Mary Ann had a brother named Samuel CUNNINGHAM and she named one of her sons, "Samuel C." Mary Ann also had a brother named Thomas CUNNINGHAM. Did she name one of her sons "Thomas C." - - - - - - - - - 1810 Census of WC VA for John & Mary Ann HUTTON: Males: John (26-45); if not the William who married Eleanor? HAYTER, then 1 unknown (16-25); John (under 10). Females: Mary Ann (26-45); Jane (10-15); Elizabeth, Susannah, Margaret, & Mary Ann (under 10). 1820 Census of WC VA for John & Mary Ann HUTTON: Males: John (45 or over); 2 unknown (under 10). Females: Mary Ann (45 or over); Jane, Elizabeth, Susannah (16-25); Margaret, Mary Ann (10-15) John & Mary Ann are suppose to have been married in or about 1791 per D.E. Brown’s book, but only one of their children show up in the census as being born before 1800 and living with them. Nicholas REAGAN had a habit of not including the actual marriage date on some of the marriage returns he submitted. - - - - - - - - - - Mary Ann’s will is dated 30 Apr 1841 and was recorded 22 Jan 1849 [WC DB 11:126-128]. - Dau. Will of Mary Ann (CUNNINGHAM) HUTTON: In the name of God Amen, I Mary Ann HUTTON, of the county of Washington and State of Virginia, being sick and weak in body but (as I trust) in the enjoyment of my common mind and reason for which I thank God, and of disposing memory, and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life, and being desirous to dispose of all such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with to hereby make this my last will and testament in manner and from following to wit: First. I give to my daughter Margaret HUTTON and to my son John HUTTON, my plantation on which I now live containing 133 acres be the same more or less. (Being the tract of land devised to me by my husband John HUTTON lately dec'd., to be divided between them equally by a line beginning at a white oak in a hollow on the south east side of the tract, on a corner joining the lands belonging to the Estate or heirs of Dickson HUTTON, dec'd.), near to where a shuck(?) pen now stands and some twenty or thirty poles northward from where William SCOTT now lives, and running from said white oak corner northward to the northern boundary of the tract, fixing the courses from said corner or beginning, so as with one line, to divide the tract into two equal quantities, or within a fraction of being equal as to quantity. And the moiety or part lying East of the line aforesaid with its appurtenances, I give to my son John HUTTON and his heirs forever, provided, and upon condition that he shall pay to his sister Jane HUTTON (who is blind) towards maintaining her Twenty dollars per annum annually during her life. And the moiety or part lying West of the line aforesaid with its appurtenances, I give to my daughter Margaret HUTTON, and her heirs forever, provided and upon condition that she shall supply her sightless sister Jane HUTTON, with what may be necessary for her decent and comfortable maintainences over and above what she is to receive from her brother John, during her life. (vis. whatever the amount to be paid of John falls short of supporting Jane, is to be supplied by Margaret). And for greater certainty of the understanding and execution of this part of my Will, I repeat if my daughter and my son John, or their lawful representatives, shall provide for and comfortably maintain their sister Jane during her life, then in consideration thereof I give my plantation aforesaid to the said Margaret HUTTON and the said John HUTTON and their heirs forever, to be equally divided between them as above directed provided always that if from any cause, the said Margaret or John or their lawful representatives shall fail to contribute to the support and maintenance of their sister Jane, as before required, then the said Jane HUTTON shall have, receive, and enjoy all the rents, issues and profits of the lands aforesaid, during her life, and after her decease to be held and enjoyed by the said Margaret HUTTON and the said John HUTTON and their heirs forever. Secondly. I give to my son Samuel HUTTON and his heirs forever all my undivided interest, in and to, a certain tract of land lying in the Poor Valley in Washington county and state of Virginia, being one ninth of a tract of land containing about [130] acres be the same more or less belonging to the heirs of my father William CUNNINGHAM, dec'd. Thirdly. I give to my daughter Jane HUTTON one bed and furniture, and to my daughter Elizabeth SCOTT one bed and furniture, and to my granddaughter Susannah HUTTON thirty dollars. Fourthly. I give to my daughter Margaret HUTTON all my beds and furniture not devised above and all my household and kitchen furniture of every kind and one of the best of my horses, and one of the best of my milch cows, and all my flock of sheep and twelve of the best of my hogs, and one plow and harrow, and two sets of horse(?) gears. Fifthly. I desire that all that portion of my personal estate not devised above may be sold at public sale or such credit as my Executor may think best. And it is my will and desire, that all that remains of the proceeds of my personal estate, or debts due to me, or money on hand, after payment of my just debts, funeral expenses, the legacies above mentioned, and the expense of executing this will, shall be equally divided amongst my three daughters, namely Elizabeth SCOTT, Susannah HUTTON wife of John HUTTON, and Mary Ann HAYTER, and paid to them or their lawful representatives by my Executor. Lastly. I hereby appoint my son John HUTTON Executor of the my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this [30 Apr 1841]. [Signed]: Mary Ann HUTTON [Seal] [by her mark]. Signed, Sealed, published and declared by Mary Ann HUTTON as and for her last will and testament in the presence and hearing of us, at her request and in her presence have subscribed our names as Witnesses: Robert CLARK, Martin H. MORELL, Edward C. CROW. At a court held for Washington county [22 Jan 1849]. The last Will and Testament of Mary Ann HUTTON deceased was exhibited in court and proved by the oath of Robert CLARK and Martin H. MORELL two of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of John HUTTON the executor therein named who took the oath of an executor prescribed by law and entered into and acknowledged his bond in the sum of [$300.00] with William C. EDMONDSON and John RAGSDALE as his securities conditioned as the law directs. A certificate is therefore granted him for the obtaining letters testamentary upon the estate of the said Mary Ann HUTTON deceased in due form. Teste - John G. KREGER, D.C. [Source: Washington Co., VA Will Book 11:126-128]. (The problem here is not knowing if all her children are mentioned in her will. One thing that I have noticed is that heirs that leave the area or the state may not be willed anything. Also some of the older heirs may have already received the equivalent of their inheritance). And widows may be willing to leave more to their daughters that their husbands would have. - - - - - - - - - - John HUTTON’s will is very brief: I, John HUTTON, of Washington County, Virginia, being week in body but enjoying my ordinary reason do make and publish this my last will and Testament. First, I give to my beloved wife, Mary Ann HUTTON, my plantation on which I now live with all its appurtenances to have and to hold to her and her heirs forever. And also I give to my wife Mary Ann after all my debts are paid all my personal estate of every kind together with all the money on hand at the time of my decease. I appoint my son John HUTTON, Executor. 2 Nov 1838. 2. Judy, While researching Thomas C. HUTTON, I came across the following deed we had for Wm. HUTTON (another of the unknown HUTTON’s of WC). The deed has proof that Wm. HUTTON married a daughter of Esau HAYTER (b. 1765, d. 1826, son of Abraham & Susannah HAYTER). Esau HAYTER married Elizabeth ALLISON (according to the "Families of Washington County and Bristol, Virginia, 1776-1996," page 173). At the same time the above may have led to the parents of Esau HUTTON, another unknown HUTTON. There is no doubt the HUTTON’s and HAYTER’s were connected in that John & Jane (DICKSON) HUTTON’s son, Edward married Esau HAYTER’s sister Frances. The above investigating and analysis may have also uncovered the parents of Thomas C. HUTTON if my conjecture is correct. No solid proof though. - - - - - - - - - - WC VA Deed Book 12:137-138 -- 17 Apr 1835 deed between Wm. HUTTON and Reuben BRADLEY, high sheriff of WC: "that the said HUTTON being in custody under a capias ad salisfaciedum [that you take to satisfy a written order to arrest and detain, until a person can pay his debt, a person who has been ordered by the court to pay a sum of money (no going bankrupt in those days) ]. at the suit of Benjamin WHITAKER, executor [and son-in-law] of E. HUTTON’s wife] under the Will of the aforesaid Esau HAYTER now on record in the clerk’s office of Washington county court, to have and to hold the said interest in the said Salt lick and adjoining land to him the said Reuben BRADLEY, his heirs and assigns for the purpose for which in compliance with law this deed is executed and the said William HUTTON for himself, his heirs and assigns doth covenant and warrant unto the said Reuben BRADLEY, his heirs, his interest herein before specified. In witness whereof the said William HUTTON hath hereunto affixed his hand and seal the day and year above written. [Signed]: William HUTTON [Seal]. Eleanor was not given a last name for some reason, but in any case, Eleanor would most likely be the wife of Wm. Esau HAYTER willed his daughter, Eleanor "a Negro girl named Anne" in his 1826 Will. Wm. HUTTON bought "one Negro boy named Peter -- $375.00" from Easu’s 1827 Inventory sale. Wm. HUTTON had the following four slaves in the 1830 census of WC: 1 male (36-54), 1 female (24-35), 2 females (under 10). Wm. HUTTON had no slaves in the 1820 census of WC. WC Will Book 6:358-359 -- appraisal of the slaves and personal property of Esau HAYTER. Slaves: Peggy, Aaron, Maria, Anne, Charles, Caty, Moses, Peter, Thomas, Sam and Phillis ... Ordered to be recorded 28 Jun 1834. - - - - - - - - - - Thomas HUTTON is one line above Wm. HUTTON and one line below John HUTTON Sr. in the 1820 census. As Wm. HUTTON is getting close to being proven to be part of the Baker Creek clan, we have Thomas HUTTON in very close proximity to those HUTTON’s. 1820 census for Wm. HUTTON. Males: Wm. (26-44), 1 (16-25), 1 (under 10). Females: Eleanor? (16-25), 1 (under 10). Wm. & his wife had one son and one dau. under 10 prior to 1821, thus they probably married about 1815-1817. Wm.’s wife was young, so she may have been about 21 when they were married. Wm. was at least 26 in 1820, but probably not much older. thus he may have been born about 1790-1794. (He was 30 - 39 in the 1830 census, thus born about 1791 or later). Wm. would not have been the son of the following sons of John & Jane (DICKSON) HUTTON for the following reasons: Edward HUTTON -- all his sons were accounted for in his will. James HUTTON -- all his sons were identified via James’ will, deeds & guardian bonds and he married 17 Jan 1797. Leonard HUTTON -- married 31 Oct 1793 and supposedly his son John was born first. Dickson HUTTON -- did not marry until 1807. Wm. would not have been the son of John & Jane (DICKSON) HUTTON as Jane’s first child, Eleanor was Christened on 01 Nov 1761 at Christ Church, Huntington Township, York (now Adams) Co., Pa. Thus Jane would have most likely been past child bearing age by 1790. Moses HUTTON of Indian Run was too young to have had a son around 1790-1794. So, the only person left is John HUTTON Jr., son of John & Jane (DICKSON) HUTTON. John Jr. was born 05 Dec 1767, thus by 1790 he would have been about 33 years old. D.E. BROWN included John Jr.’s marriage to Mary Ann CUNNINGHAM in a list of undated marriages by Nicholas REAGAN. That list is placed between the 1791 marriages and 1792 marriages in BROWN’s book "The Marriages of Washington Co., VA," (1993), page 26]. Mary Ann CUNNINGHAM was born about 1772. John HUTTON & Mary Ann CUNNINGHAM married about 1791. Their known children were: 3 where the dates they were born are not known: Jane, Mary Ann, and Susanna A. - John, born about 1801, - Elizabeth "Betsy", born about 1802, - Margaret, born 15 Oct 1806, - Samuel C., born about 1812, Therefore, Wm. HUTTON who was born about 1790-1794 fits nicely into the unknown children of John & Mary Ann from about 1792 - 1800. Another younger "unknown" HUTTON of WC, Esau HUTTON, may have been the son of Wm. HUTTON and Eleanor HAYTER as Eleanor’s father’s first name was Esau. - - - - - - - - - - The "unknown" Thomas HUTTON also fits in as a son of John & Mary Ann. Later records have a Thomas C. HUTTON associated with the HUTTON’s who is probably one and the same person. Note that Mary Ann’s maiden name was CUNNINGHAM and she named one of her sons Samuel C. HUTTON. Thus Thomas C. HUTTON may have also been given the middle name of CUNNINGHAM. 1820 census of WC for Thomas HUTTON: Males: Thomas (16-25), 1 additional (16-25), 2 (under 10). Females: 1(16-25). Thus Thomas was probably born between 1795 -1799. Note that in the 1820 census, Thomas HUTTON was on the line immediately below John HUTTON (husband of Mary Ann CUNNINGHAM) and Wm. HUTTON was on the line immediately below the above Thomas HUTTON. 1830 census of WC for Thomas HUTTON: Males: Thomas (30-39), 1 (15-19), 1 (10-14), 1 (5-9), 1 (under 5). Females: 1 (20-30), 2 (under 5). Slaves: 1 male (36-54), 1 female (24-35), 2 females (under 10). Thus Thomas could have been born between 1791 - 1800 per this census which ties in with the 1820 census estimated birth year span of 1795-1799. - - - - - - - - - - Bob Ford

    3. Hi Carol, As Glen said, the Family History Center (FHC) near you should be able to order the films for you. Go to "familysearch.org" and click on "library" and follow the instructions to get the film number you need. The FHC should be able to order the microfilms for you. You will have about a month to examine the films before the FHC has to return them to the Library. 3. Hi Carol, Just a couple of weeks ago (Nov 28th) I was looking at Washington Co., VA deed books 3 & 4, 1802 to 1808 which I ordered at my nearby LDS church for $3.50. You should be able to order film of the deed book years you need at any Family History Center located in a church in your area. You do not need to be Mormon to order their many films. In fact, most of the volunteers who staff the church family history center near me are not church members. Hope this answers your question. Glenn E. 2. Judy Bisig wrote: << I noticed that on the 1810 Census that is not alphabetized that Leonard and Moses Hutton lived close to each other. >> Yes they did. John HATTON (father of Leonard) bought 177 acres in WC VA from George GAMBLE & Margaret his wife on 20 Oct 1795 [WC DB 1:436]. This was the land on Indian Run and near Little Holston (now Hall) Creek on the north side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River. The 177 acres bordered the eastern boundary line of James WOOD’s 2,800 Cedar Creek Patent (more specifically, the eastern boundary line of Arthur ORR Sr. previously of Tyrone Township, York (now Adams) Co., PA, who on 21 Jul 1795, bought 402 acres that was once part of WOOD’s Patent from Lewis WILLS & Catharine his wife [WC DB 1:413). The 177 acres also bordered Geo. & Margaret GAMBLE on the east, James SNODGRASS on the southeast, and James REID’s 174.5 acre tract on the south. James REID (who had owned land bordering Arthur ORR Sr. in Tyrone Township, York (now Adams) Co., PA) bought his 174.5 acre tract from Robert ELDER on 17 Mar 1795 [WC DB 1:389]. (James REID was the ancestor of many of the early REID’s of WC that lived in the Forks area between and along the South Fork & Middle Forks of the Holston River). See the topographic map at http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=36.7375&lon=-81.81 for the approximate location of Leonard HUTTON's Indian Run tract. Camp Pocahontas at the bottom of the map was the location of James REID's 174.5 acre tract (plus 50 acres along the Middle Fork that he added later), REID's tract extended up to the vicinity of Route 735, the east-west road north of Camp Pocahontas. Leonard HUTTON's tract was north of James REID's tract, perhaps between Route 735 and the east-west part of Indian Run. Moses HUTTON's early tracts were east and southeast of Leonard's tract. The above John HATTON’s brother James HATTON (of Huntington Township, York (now Adams) Co., PA), had bought 250 acres that was also part of WOOD’s Cedar Creek Patent from John FULTON on 21 Nov 1785 [WC DB 1:29]. The 250 acre tract bordered the western boundary line of Arthur ORR Sr.’s 402 acre tract. On 17 Aug 1797, Leonard’s parent’s John & Jean HATTON sold the above 177 acres to Leonard. Due to an error in the original survey for the 177 acres, a 15 acre east-west narrow strip of land sticking out from the east boundary line of the tract was not included in the survey. The error was resolved by a new survey of 15 acres and a deed dated 20 Nov 1810 for the 15 acres from Geo. & Margaret GAMBLE to Leonard HUTTON [WC DB 4:381]. Leonard HUTTON & Nancy his wife, sold the 177 acres back to Geo. GAMBLE on 04 Dec 1820 [WC DB 9:237-239]. This is probably about the time Leonard moved to what is now Smyth Co., VA where he owned land east of Marion on the waters of what is now called Hutton Branch, a branch of the Middle Fork of the Holston River. Moses HUTTON bought a 36 acre & 40 pole tract from John & Robert SNODGRASS on 14 Sep 1807 [WC DB 3:643-644]. This tract bordered the eastern boundary line of the above 177 acre HUTTON tract and the southern boundary line of the added 15 acre tract above [WC DB 3:635]. The 36 1/4 acre tract was once owned by Geo. GAMBLE. Also on 14 Nov 1807, Moses HUTTON bought 40 acres from David SNODGRASS & Margaret his wife. This tract bordered the southeast boundary of the above 177 acre HUTTON tract. Witnesses to this deed were Leonard HUTTON and Joseph & Robert SNODGRASS [WC DB 3:635]. The upper northeast corner of this triangular shaped tract bordered Little Holston Creek. Moses HUTTON also acquired other contiguous tracts, parts of which included land that was once part of the above 177 acre tract. - - - - - - - - - - << Also the people involved in the Hargis Praytor Will, that Moses and Leonard witnessed the Administrative Bond below. Then, John Hutton & Thomas Hutton are on the bond. Also, Thomas is not one of the common Hutton names. Leonard Hutton's wife Martha McCall's father was named Thomas. Leonard had a son named John, who possibly is the one named below, but then there are so many John Hutton. Thomas named his children Moses H., William, Elijah, Sarah, Elizabeth & James D. Leonard had children named William, Sarah, James, & Elizabeth. However, again, very common names. I wonder though if Thomas was related to Moses or Leonard given the circumstantial evidence. Also, Leonard's son William married Eliza Hill. Could she be a sister to Thomas' wife Mary Ann Hill? Walter Hill had a son Moses. I wonder if Thomas named his son Moses H. after Moses Hutton or maybe Walter Hill's son Moses? >> There were 4 adult John HUTTON’s in 1818 in WC (John son of John Sr., John son of Leonard, John son of Edward and John son of James (the last 3 John’s being grandsons of John Sr.). John HUTTON Sr. died sometime between 11 Apr 1808 when he attached a codicil to his will and before 18 Sep 1809 when his inventory was appraised. The same 4 John’s were in the 1820 census (after John HUTTON Sr. died, his son John became the John Sr. in the 1820 census). Hard to say which John was involved with Hargis’ administrative bond. The others are easier to identify: James REID would have been the above James that was a neighbor of Leonard & Moses HUTTON. Moses HUTTON -- there was only the one Moses. Walter HILL -- most likely the Walter living in the general vicinity of Moses HUTTON or farther up the Middle Fork of the Holston River. Thomas HUTTON -- there is only one adult HUTTON named Thomas it seems. James ORR would be Capt. James ORR, son of Arthur ORR Sr. He would be the only adult James ORR in WC in 1818 and in 1820. John HUTTON Sr.’s will was written 23 Feb 1808. The problem is he did not name all of his children. He named sons Dickson (also Dixon) and James. He did not name his known son’s John & Edward and only named his son Leonard in his short codicil (Leonard’s son John was to get one great coat). He named five of his daughters: Ellenor, Ann, Margaret and two that were deceased (Jane & Mary’s children to get 1/5 each). [Will: WC WB 3:182-183, Inv: WB 3:142-143, Account: WB 4: 129-130]. Dixon HUTTON was most likely named for his mother Jane (DICKSON/DIXON) HUTTON. The Will of James HUTTON of Baker Creek (son of John HUTTON Sr.) was dated 07 Jan 1820. Witnesses were James MEEK, Dickson HATTON, Wm. HATTON, and Edward HATTON [WC WB 4:320-321]. So we have the unknown Wm. HATTON playing a part in John HUTTON Sr.’s family. The earliest Wm. HUTTON that was proved to be related was Leonard HUTTON’s son Wm. who was born about 1813 and who married Eliza HILL, but he was too young to have been a witness to a will in 1820. This older Wm. HUTTON may be related but no proof has been found that can establish a relationship. Wm. HUTTON was also a buyer at James HUTTON’s inventory sale [WC WB 4:360-361]. - - - - - - - - - - William EAKIN & Moses HUTTON were securities for the will of James HUTTON of Cedar Creek, dated 08 Apr 1803 and probated 21 Feb 1815[WC WB 4:115-117] -- James being the brother of John HUTTON Sr. of Baker Creek. - - - - - - - - - - The most intriguing association I have seen with Moses HUTTON is the following guardianship: 15 Sep 1818, Moses HUTTON named guardian of Joseph, Polly, John, Moses, Elenor and Edward SNODGRASS, orphans of John SNODGRASS, deceased. Bond: $2,000, Sureties: James HUTTON, Wm. SNODGRASS, Joseph SNODGRASS. [Source: "Guardian Bonds Washington County, Virginia, 1780 - 1872," (1984), The Historical Society of WC VA Pub. Series II, No 21, page 16]. Inventory for John SNODGRASS, 27 Nov 1812, recorded 21 Sep 1813. Administrators: Joseph SNODGRASS & Edward HUTTON. Appraisers: Robert WHITELY, Jonathan SMITH, Alexander BUCHANAN. [Source: WC VA WB 4:32-33]. John SNODGRASS Estate, one farm on the north side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River, joining the lands of Joseph SNODGRASS & others, 180 acres having thereon one log dwelling house, one log barn, and four log "cabbins," valued at $900. [Source: "Supplement to Southwest Virginia Tax Assessments, 1815," (1992), by Mary B. KEGLEY, page 23]. The above 180 acres was located in the Baker Creek (now Hutton Creek) area of Washington County. Margaret HUTTON (dau. of John & Jane (DICKSON) HUTTON), married the above John SNODGRASS in WC VA on 02 Oct 1800 (by Rev. Edward CRAWFORD). As Moses HUTTON was the guardian of all of Margaret’s children, it would seem like there would have to be a very close relationship. How close though. Is it possible that Moses was a brother of Margaret. If not what was the relationship. Moses was living down on the Indian Run - Little Holston Creek area near the Middle Fork of the Holston River and Margaret (HUTTON) SNODGRASS was living on the east side of Baker/Hutton Creek northeast of Glade Spring. Why was Moses the guardian of John & Margaret's children, when there were so many other siblings of Margaret's living in the area. Plus Margaret named one of her sons Moses. The will of John HATTON dated 23 Feb 1808 did not name all John's children - - John & Edward, two other sons of John, were also not mentioned in John's will (although Edward was a witness to John's will). Moses was born 04 Dec 1784. Margaret (HUTTON) SNODGRASS was 65 years old according to the 1850 census of WC VA and therefore may have been born about 1784/1785. Also Margaret married in Oct 1800, so even if the census was slightly wrong and if she was about 18 when she married, she would still have been born about 1781/1783 - - so both Margaret & Moses were probably born only a couple of years apart. There is a Peggy SNODGRASS that was head of household on page 232 of the 1820 Census of Washington Co., VA (Peggy being a diminutive or nickname of Margaret). Peggy, age 26-44, (b. 1776-1794), 1 male, age 16-25, (b. 1795-1804), 2 males, age 10-15, (b. 1805-1810), 1 male, age under 10, (b. 1811-1820), 1 female, age 16-25, (b. 1795-1804), 1 female, age under 10, (b. 1811-1820). The 1820 Census is in alphabetical order, but even then one might be able to find a general location of where a person was living by checking the persons that are near the line number of any given individual in the census. Abram SNODGRASS; Joseph, SNODGRASS, Sr.; and James SNODGRASS, Sr. -- were on the 3 lines of the census directly above Peggy SNODGRASS' name. There is a Margaret SNODGRASS that was head of household on page 284 of the 1830 Census of Washington Co., VA . Margaret, age 40-49, (b. 1781-1790), 2 males, age 20-29, (b. 1801-1810), 1 male, age 15-19, (b. 1811-1815), 1 male, age 5-9, (b. 1821-1825), 1 female, age 20-29, (b. 1801-1810), 1 female, age 15-19, (b. 1811-1815). The 1830 Census is also in alphabetical order. Persons on lines just above or below Margaret were John, Wm., & John SNODGRASS, Jr. There is a Margaret SNODGRASS that was head of household on page 244 of the 1840 Census of Washington Co., VA. Margaret, age 60-69, (b. 1771-1780), 1 male, age 15-19, (b. 1821-8125), 1 female, age 30-39, (b. 1801-1810). The 1840 Census is also in alphabetical order. Persons on the two lines just above Margaret in the census were Edward & John SNODGRASS. There is a Margaret SNODGRASS that was head of household (#347) in the 1850 Census of Washington Co., VA and lived near John & Mary HUTTON, Jonathan & Nancy LEACH, and Arthur & Rachel McCALL and others that lived in the Bakers Creek neighborhood. SNODGRASS, Dwelling # 346: John, age 44, (b. about 1805/1806), Margaret, age 37, (b. about 1812/1813), Jane, age 16, (b. about 1833/1834), Wm., age 14, (b. about 1835/1836), Edward, age 12, (b. about 1837/1838), Mary, age 11, (b. about 1838/1839), Francis, age 10, (b. about 1839/1840), Martha, age 5, (b. about 1844/1845), Sarah, age 4, (b. about 1845/1846), Catharine, age 1, (b. 1849). SNODGRASS, Dwelling # 347: Margaret, age 65, (b. about 1784/1785), Polly, age 46, (b. about 1803/1804), Wm., age 26, (b. about 1823/1824). SNODGRASS, Dwelling # 348: Edward, age 37, (b. about 1812/1813), Mary, age 37, (b. about 1812/1813), Sarah, age 10, (b. about 1839/1840), John, age 8, (b. about 1841/1842), Margaret, age 7, (b. about 1842/1843), Nancy, age 5, (b. about 1844/1845), James, age 4, (b. about 1845/1846), Mary, age 2, (b. about 1847/1848). Possible children of John SNODGRASS & Margaret HUTTON: A Moses SNODGRASS married Margaret FUDGE on 19 Feb 1835 (by Rev. Alexander McEWEN, who succeeded Rev. Edward CRAWFORD as Pastor of Glade Spring Presbyterian Church). A Moses SNODGRASS, (b. 02 Nov 1808, d. 03 Mar 1850), and Margaret L. SNODGRASS, (b. 15 Aug 1815, d. 04 Sep 1893), "Father" & "Mother," are buried in Rock Spring Presbyterian Church cemetery ("High on a Windy Hill", page 210). Eleanor SNODGRASS married Isaac HUTTON on 08 Mar 1837 (by Rev. Alexander McEWEN). An Edward SNODGRASS married Polly S. CROW on 27 Jan 1838 (by Rev. Alexander McEWEN). 2. D. E. BROWN's book, "The Marriages of Washington Co., VA, 1781 - 1853" (1993), covers the time frame when parents were not listed in the WC Marriage Registers (except in rare instances). Brown did include the parents if he found any. He found only two entries with parents (see pages 8 and 46): (1) __ __ 1849, John BLANKENBECKLER & Elizabeth EDMONDSON, Daughter of Andrew E. & Patsy EDMONDSON. Married by Andrew PATTERSON. (2) 18 Oct 1814, Solomon OSBORN (single, birth: WC VA, white, residence WC VA, parents: James OSBORN, occupation: farmer) and Retty LIVINGSTON (age 20, single, birth: WC VA, residence WC VA, parents: Peter & Elizabeth LIVINGSTON). Married by James FOLLEY. - - - - - - - - - - Thomas COLLEY's book, "Washington County Marriages 1853-1880," (1997), contains marriages starting in 1853 -- but 1854 seems to have been when the parents had begun to be listed in the WC Marriage Registers (as well as age; if single, widow, widower, divorced; where born; where resided; grooms occupation; and married by). COLLEY has included all the above info in his book. BROWN writes there were no marriages found prior to 1781 (even though WC was formed in 1776) and very few marriages before 1785. There are no original marriage licenses prior to 1844. Also, there are no marriage bonds or banns. Any of those which existed apparently were burned in the fire of 1864. Bob Ford

    2. Hi Judy, I went back in our email archives and noticed that my wife, Donna Jean, and Diane Costello were working on the Thomas C. Hutton problem back in 2000/2001. I’m afraid the Thomas C. HUTTON problem still exists as nothing has been found on our end to suggest who his parents were. To start with I have included the following you wrote (I guess back in 2000/2001 or so) that lays out the information and problem(s) you had at the time. - - - - - - - - - - I am trying to connect my Hutton's to the Washington Co. VA Huttons. My gg-grandfather Moses H. Hutton's death certificate names his parent as Thomas C. Hutton & Mary Hill. The 1900 Indiana Census has Moses H. and his mother and father's BP as VA. There is a Thomas Hutton in the Washington Co. census in 1820 & 1830, but not in the 1840 census. My speculation on the ancestor's of Moses H. Hutton being associated with the Washington Co. VA Huttons is based on migration patterns with other families from Washington Co. VA. The data indicates that there is a relationship with Moses Hutton who married Nancy Jinks, and lived in Washington County, VA. I know that several of this Moses Hutton's children migrated to Missouri. I also know that Sarah Jane Hutton, the daughter of Moses Hutton married Augustus Wedding and they migrated to Owen County, Indiana. Living in Owen County, Indiana in 1840 were Thomas Hutton, Moses Hutton, and Augustus Wedding. In the 1850 Census Augustus Wedding 40 & wife Jane 34, both from VA. plus 6 of their children are living in Putnam Co. IN. The oldest was born in VA & the next 5 were born in IN. In the Owen Co. Indiana 1850 Census are Moses H. Hutton, his wife Eliza and their 4 children; also, Thomas Hutton, his wife Mary, and their three children. There is also Elijah Hutton 28, from VA, his wife V. (Vernilda) and an infant daughter. Moses H. Hutton and Elijah may have been brothers, as Moses H. named a son Elijah. Also reinforcing the relationship between the Augustus Wedding family and Moses H. Hutton, one of Moses H.'s sons was named Augustus. According to the ages of Augustus' children in 1850, the oldest girl Elenor E.J. 14, was born in VA in 1836, and the next child Mary E. 11 was born in IN in 1839, so they must have left Virginia between 1836 and 1839. In the 1860 Census Thomas Hutton and his family are still in Owen Co., Indiana. Augustus Wedding and Moses H. Hutton and their families are now in Macon Co., Missouri living close to each other. In the 1870 Census Augustus and his family are still in Macon Co., MO, but Moses H. is no longer there. However, Moses H. Hutton and his family are in the 1880 Census in Putnam County, Indiana, where Augustus Wedding and his family were living in 1850. I have not been able to see the 1870 Indiana Census, but speculate that Moses H. Hutton was in Indiana in 1870. I will greatly appreciate any ideas or information regarding these families. Judy Bisig - - - - - - - - - - - Here's what I came up with. You mentioned that Mary Ann HILL married Thomas C. HUTTON. There is a Walter HILL associated with the HUTTON’s. There were two Walter HILL’s in the 1810 census of WC. One was a neighbor of various KEYWOOD’s. A Walter HILL was granted a 120 acre Land Grant on the waters of the North Fork of the Holston River on 06 Jul 1802 [VA Land Grant Book 50:78-79]. On the same day a Berry KEYWOOD was granted two Land Grants, a 100 acre Land Grant adjoining Walter HILL [VA Land Grant Book 50:77] and a 60 acre Land Grant in the Rich Valley on the waters of the North Fork of the Holston River [VA Land Grant Book 50:78] I tried to analyze the 1810 and 1820 census and came up with the following: 1810 census -- the two Walter HILL’s were living on the North Fork of the Holston River, Walter on page 720 had the KEYWOOD neighbors and two lines below this Walter was Thomas PRATOR [also PRAYTOR, (more on him later)]. The other Walter was on page 721, 14 lines from the 1st Walter and was most likely related to the other Walter. On page 700 was Moses HUTTON who owned land in the Indian Run - Little Holston Creek (now Hall Creek) area north of the Middle Fork of the Holston River. Moses’ land joined Leonard HUTTON (who is related to the Baker Creek (now Hutton Creek) HUTTON’s and also the James HUTTON & his son Leonard on Cedar Creek (which is west of Indian Run), who were on page 701. On page 731 were the Baker Creek HUTTON’s: Edward, John, Dixon and James who all lived on adjoining tracts. Moses HUTTON may be related to the other HUTTON’s. There are various associations, but we have not found actual proof. 1820 census -- This census is in alphabetical order by the first letter of the person’s surname, thus its much more difficult to establish who a family’ s neighbors are. The last 4 lines on page 211 have: HUTTON, Edward HUFF, John HUTTON, John senior HUTTON, Thomas Page 212 have the following starting with the first line on the page: HUTTON, Wm. HENNIGER, Samuel HILL, Benjamin HUTTON, Leonard HUTTON, John junior HUMPHREY, Edward HUBBLE, Joel? HOUSTON, John HOUSTON, Wm. HUTTON, Doren HALFACRE, Henry HILL, Walter HUTTON, Moses HALFACRE, Jacob HALFACRE, Fredrick The following HUTTON’s: Edward, John senior, Leonard and John junior were still living in the Baker Creek area, so its probable that Thomas HUTTON, Wm. HUTTON and Benjamin HILL were also living in that area. That Thomas HUTTON may have been your Thomas C. HUTTON. Moses HUTTON was still in the Indian Run - Little Holston Creek area and Henry, Jacob & Fredrick HALFACRE were probably east of the old Ebbing Spring church area and/or further up the Middle Fork of the Holston River. Walter HILL may have been in the general area of Moses HUTTON or the HALFACRE’s. Hard to say where Doran HUTTON might have lived. The 1830 census is also in alphabetical order by the 1st letter of the surname. Benjamin HILL is 2 lines above Thomas HUTTON. Benjamin HILL is still in the 1840 census, but Thomas HUTTON is not. Benjamin B. HILL was in the 1850 census, he was born in 1793 according to the "Families of Washington County and Bristol, Virginia, 1776-1996," page 186-187. Nothing on who his parents or siblings were. - - - - - - - - - - - 1810 Census Washington Co., VA HUTTON, Moses (26-44 = born between 1766-1784), Females: 1 (26-44), 1 (under 10), 1 (45 or over). - - - - - - - - - - - From a "Supplement to Southwest Virginia Tax Assessments, 1815," (1992), by Mary B. Kegley: Page 15: "Abednego MADDEN [should be WEDDING], one farm on the main road and the Middle Fork of Holstein [Holston], joining Leonard HUTTON, Junr. on Indian Run, waters of the Middle Fork, having a log dwelling house, a log barn, and 3 log "cabbins," valued at $1,200." - - - - - - - - - - - Abednego owned part (or all) of Collin McKINNEY's original 169 acre Land Grant dated 20 Jun 1785 (VA Land Grant Book Q:295-297). The eastern boundary of the tract crossed Cedar Creek. Collin & Rebecca McKINNEY had deeded 60 acres of the western part of their 169 acres to their son James on 09 Sep 1806. A Robert WHITE bordered the western boundary of the 60 acres (WC DB 3:510). - - - - - - - - - - - WC Survey Book 1:108 -- Surveyed for Colin McKENNEY [McKINNEY] ... The James HATTON/HUTTON on Cedar Creek was a brother of the John HATTON/HUTTON on Baker Creek. Both moved their families from the Bermudian Creek area of Huntington and Tyrone Townships, York (now Adams) Co., PA. (As Sarah HATTON was the dau. of Moses HUTTON, then the above marriage would also be reasonable proof that Moses HUTTON had a wife prior to marrying Nancy JINKS in 1820). No record can be found that shows that Augustus & Sarah (HATTON) WEDDING remained in Washington Co., VA. Augustus was not in the 1840 census. ---- Sarah Jane HUTTON was born 27 Jan 1814 and died 11 Oct 1892 in Randolph Co., MO. She is buried in Old Salem Cumberland Presbyterian cemetery. Augustus M. Buyers included Moses, John, Leonard, & Thomas HUTTON who bought many items. Hargis' widow Nancy also bought a lot of items. Darkey, Wm., & Thomas PRAYTOR bought only 6 items between them. Margaret SNODGRASS bought 2 geese & 1 hoe. There were 6 other buyers: Walter HILL, Joel BOW, John CARPENTER, Gryson(?) LEE, and Arthur & Finley ORR, who all together bought only 10 items plus 6 animals between them. The HUTTON’s bought at least 47 items, plus 17 animals, 5 geese, 1/3 of a small field of wheat, 1/3 of a field of rye, and 1/3 of a large field of wheat. John & Leonard HUTTON bought all but 6 of the things the HUTTON’s bought. A Thomas HARGIS [see Families of Washington Co., & Bristol, VA 1776-1996, page 171, (HARGIS Family)] and Thomas PRAYTOR (probably the father of Nancy's husband Thomas Hargis PRAYTOR) lived near each other in the 1820 Census of Washington Co., VA (pages 720 & 721, 5 lines from one another). Also on those pages were Nicholas REAGAN, 4 KEYWOOD families, Joseph SCOTT, Robert & Wm. ALLISON, John & George McNEW, and others which would generally cover the Rich Valley and Saltville area possibly north of Walker's Mountain and Bakers Creek. Hargis & Nancy PRAYTOR probably were living somewhere in the general vicinity of Moses HUTTON and his SNODGRASS neighbors though. We can see no reason why James ORR and James REID who lived next to each other on tracts with boundaries on the Middle Fork of the Holston River between Cedar Creek and Hall Creek would be appraisers for Thomas PRAYTOR's Inventory if he had lived in Rich Valley. Normally most appraisers were neighbors and occasionally relatives that were not heirs to the deceased. Finley ORR and his brother(?) Arthur ORR who were buyers at Hargis' Inventory sale also lived a couple of tracts to east of Moses HUTTON. Walter HILL was on the line above and next to Moses HUTTON on page 220 of the 1820 Census. John CARPENTER, one of the buyers at Hargis' Inventory sale, was on the next line above Benjamin CRAWFORD on page 200 of the 1820 Census and Benjamin was also a neighbor of Moses HUTTON. Nancy PRAYTOR was head of household on page 227 of the 1820 Census of WASHINGTON CO., VA. Nancy, age 16-25 (b. 1795-1804), 1 male (her son Thomas most likely), age under 10, (b. 1811-1820). Nancy is not head of household in the 1830 or 1840 census of WC VA. 18 Aug 1818, Moses HUTTON named guardian of Thomas H. PRAYTOR, orphan of Thomas H. PRAYTOR, deceased, Bond: $750, Surety: Leonard HUTTON. [Source: Guardian Bonds, Washington Co., VA, 1780-1872, abstracted by Gerald H. CLARK, Historical Society of Washington Co., VA Publications Series II, No. 21, May, 1984, page 16]. A Thomas Hargis PRATOR married Nancy HUTTON 27 Mar 1817, (by Rev. John JONES, Jr., a minister of St. Clair Bottom Church). [Source: "The Marriages of Washington County, Virginia, 1781-1853," by D. E. BROWN, page 48]. A Thomas PREATOR [PRAYTOR?] married Milly WHEELER 27 May 1788 (by Rev. Charles CUMMINGS). [Source: "The Marriages of Washington County, Virginia, 1781-1853," by D. E. BROWN, page 47]. There was a Thomas PRATER [PRAYTOR?] in the 1820 census of Washington Co., VA: Males: 1 (45 or over), 2 (16-25), 1 (10-15), Females: 2 (26-44), 1 (45 or over). The PRAYTORs were also associated with St. Clair Bottom Church - - Thomas Hargis PRATOR married Nancy HUTTON 27 Mar 1817, (by Rev. John JONES, Jr., a minister of St. Clair Bottom Church). The HUTTON’s were very involved with Thomas & Nancy (HUTTON) PRAYTOR it seems, including Moses HUTTON becoming guardian of their son Thomas H. PRAYTOR. Also Moses, John, Leonard, & Thomas HUTTON bought many items at Thomas PRAYTOR's Inventory Sale. - - - - - - - - - - Bob Ford

    3. Bob, Can you find anything on THOMAS C. HUTTON? He was born in Washington County in 1798. He is in the 1820 & 1830 Washington County Census. He was married to MARY ANN HILL. I know he is related to the Huttons of Washingto and Smyth Counties, but I don't know who his parents were? Thank you for any help you can give me. Judy Bisig Judith Bisig [email protected]
