    3. Thanks anyway Bob. Do you know if these deed books are available for purchase or where else they may be located? 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACE/1519.2.1.3 Message Board Post: << Diane Costello wrote that "The land that was described in the Deed of 1821 was said to be conveyed to Jacob Wolf, Sr. by Joseph Haskiers on 14 August 1799 in Washington Co, VA, but I have not seen this deed." >> [see WC VA DB 7:527-529 below]. I researched the various Washington County deed books up to at least 1821 to see what I could find on any WOLF/WOLFE surname. Many of the Deed Book 3 through 7 abstracts were taken from Jack HOCKETT’s books of WC deeds (he wrote individual books for each WC deed book). There was no one named WOLF/WOLFE in WC Survey Book 1. Chronological order of land transactions for the above Jacob WOLFE Sr.’s land in what is now Smyth Co., VA: (1) 1782 -- WC Survey Book 1: 256 -- 15 Aug 1782 Survey -- John ANDERSON ... 300 acres ...on the waters of the Middle Fork of Holstein [Holston] River ... by virtue of a Certificate granted to John McFARLAND, assigned to said ANDERSON -- John McFARLAND, assignee of James ANDERSON, assignee of William HILL, assignee of John LESTER, assignee of William LESTER, who was assignee of Samuel WHITE ... 300 acres ... on the Middle Fork of Holstein River on Walkers Creek, includes improvements actual settlement made in 1773. (2) 1786 -- VA Land Grant Book Y:575 -- 300 acres on the waters of the Middle Fork of the Holston River (MFHR) granted to John ANDERSON on 05 Jul 1786. If someone can help prove (or provide reasonable conjecture) that Jacob WOLFE Sr. was born in 1745, then the Jacob WOLFE born about 1752 or 1753 would obviously not be his son and it would be time to look elsewhere for his father. It was mentioned earlier in the thread that Jacob WOLFE Sr.'s headstone had his death date as 1821. Did the headstone also have 1745 as the year he was born? Bob Ford

    3. I am searching for Austin Haynes. I haven't found him in Smyth County, Virginia. I have found some Haynes in Washington County. He was born in Virginia around 1798. He had a daughter named Mary Haynes who married my ggrandfather Robert L. Lee. She was born around 1835. My ggrandfather was born around 1827. If anyone has any info, it would be greatly appreciated. Having a Jr. and Sr. isn't that uncommon either. Also it isn't unlikely to have had a child at 15 then. I would say it is very unlikly though for Jacob Sr. to have had a child at 7 years of age and that is how old he'd have been to be the father of the Jacob Jr. in your census records.

    1. Re: [VAWASHIN] Re: Jacob WOLFE Sr. Chilhowie VA Death date 1821
    2. Regarding Jacob Wolf(e) and his clan, my research indicates that Jacob Wolfe, Sr. was born probably at least 1730. Not much has been verified about him, except that his son Jacob Wolfe, Jr. was born circa 1753 in PA, thus making Seniors birthdate much earlier than most posts I have seen on the internet. It has not been verified whether Jacob, Sr was born in Pa or possibly Germany. His wife, at his death, was named Catherine (and Caty), but I have not seen verified proof of her maiden name. It is proven that his son Martin R. Wolfe, Sr. (my direct ancestor) was born in 1788 in Washington County, Va. Jacob Senior's death was probably in 1821 in Washington County, VA verified by a Washington County deed dated 19 October 1821 citing him as deceased. It is not know how many wives Jacob Sr had. The Washington County 1820 Census lists a Jacob Wolf as a male over 45 years old (Jacob, Sr. may have been about 90 at this point). Other males are one 16-26, one 16-18, and one 10-16. Females: one over 45 (possibly Catherine), two 10-16 and two under 10. It is not known who these young children are, or if this is the same Jacob Wolf, Sr. or his son Jacob, Jr. However, Martin Wolfe is located next door on the same page. I have been unable to locate Jacob Wolfe, Sr. in any earlier census in Washington Co, VA If this Census represents Jacob Wolfe, Jr., he would be the male over 45 (about 67 years old) one male 16-26 (his son Leonard, 19?), one male 16-18 (his son James, 17?) and one 10-16 (?), Females: one over 45 (his wife Eleny would be 53), two bet 10-16 (?) and two under 10 (could be his daughters Sarah and Nancy Ann?) Complicating the above conjecture that this is Jacob Wolfe, Jr. is that Jacob Wolfe, Jr. migated to Logan County, KY early in the 1800s and is listed on tax lists there on May 29, 1801, 1802-1808. Then he is listed in Allen County, KY in 1822 with his children. He did migrate back to Smyth County, Va to die, so he may have gone back and forth between the two states. There is also a Petition to form Tazewell County, VA in 1795 signed by Jacob Wolf, Sr., Jacob Wolf, Jr., Larence Wolf (Jacob's next oldest son), and a Peter Wolf. I have heard that there is also a land grant in Virginia dated 1754 to Jacob Wolfe, Sr., but have not seen it. The land that was described in the Deed of 1821 was said to be conveyed to Jacob Wolf, Sr. by Joseph Haskiers on the 14 August 1799 in Washington Co, VA, but I have not seen this deed. Known children of Jacob Wolfe, Sr. are: 1. Jacob Wolfe, Jr. married 7 Nov 1792 to Nelly or Eleny McReynolds in Washington Co, VA. Her parents are Roland McReynolds and Agnes Ann Rich. Jacob died 1 Nov 1858 at 106 years old near Marion, Smyth County, VA (Smyth County, VA Death Records) 2. Lawrence Wolfe m. Elizabeth Snider on 17 Sept 1795 in Wythe County, VA Her father was Michael Snider and she is listed in the 1850 census as 80 years old, born in PA. Lawrence died circa 1841 ( Will dated 23 Sept 1841 3. George Wolfe - no information known. 4. Michael Wolf (20 Sept 1776 in PA, Catherine was his mother) m1 Peggy, m2Nancy (Possibly Romans) on 12 May 1857. Michael died 17 July 1858 in Smyth County at 80 years 9 mos 27 days. 5. Mary Wolf (b~1782) m. Christian Herner in 1800 6. Magdalena Molly Wolfe (b~1775) m. Adam Baugh 7. Catarina (Catherine) Wolf married Michael Baugh( b in Wythe Co) on 27 Jan 1803 in Washington Co, VA 8. Martin R. Wolfe (b 2 April 1788 in Washington Co, VA) m. 29 Apr 1813 to Rachel DeBord in Washington Co, VA and died 24 April 1859 in Smyth County, VA aged 71 years 22 days) If anyone has documentation for anything further on Jacob Wolf, Sr. or Jr. I would love to share information with you. I have much information on the descendents. Warm wishes Diane Costello -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: 14 Jan 2006 03:41:22 -0700 Subject: [VAWASHIN] Re: Jacob WOLFE Sr. Chilhowie VA Death date 1821 This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. If this was the case, Sr. was only about 15 years old when Jr. was born. Not likely. (2) If Jacob Jr. was born in 1760 and if Martin WOLFE was born in 1788, it would more than likely indicate that Jacob Sr. had more than one wife, as 25 years would be about the maximum child bearing years for a female. (3) It was also mentioned that Jacob WOLFE, Jr. died young. Was this because he disappeared from Washington county records or because of some other known fact? The reason I am asking is that looking back over some email from 1999 & 2000, I have a reference to a Jacob WOLFE, that is suppose to be the son of the above Jacob Sr., but this Jacob, "Jr." lived to be 106 years old according to his Smyth county death certificate which indicated that he died 01 Nov 1858 near Marion, Smyth Co., VA, and was the consort of Eleanor McREYNOLDS. Proof that the above Jacob "Jr." lived to be quite old is in the 1850 census of Logan Co., KY -- Jacob WOLFE, head of household, stonemason, age 97, born in PA, living with his son Leonard (49, stonemason, born in VA), Sally (39, born in VA - this is probably Leonard's wife Sally TRAMMEL who he married 26 Jan 1822), Jas. C (male, 24, born in KY), W. A. (male, 18, born in KY), N. M. (female, 13, born in KY), R. E. (female, 12, born in KY), M. J. (female, 8, born in TN), and F. W. (female, 2, born in KY). If Jacob "Jr." is the son of Jacob Sr. and if Jacob "Jr." was born about 1752 or 1753 (1858 - 106 = 1752 and 1850 - 97 = 1753), then Jacob Sr. was sure to have had at least two wives and Jacob Sr. would probably have had other earlier children. Also, Jacob Sr. would have been born around 1732 or earlier. Jacob WOLFE, "Jr." married Eleny [Eleanor] McREYNOLDS about 1792 in Washington Co., VA (according to a 07 Feb 1792 list of marriages performed by Rev. Nicholas REAGAN). [Source: D.E. 3. It appears that my line of Wolfs descend through another line - although perhaps related somewhere along the way. The 1850 Census for Washington Co VA Annotated, Waverly Wilson Barbe, (published 2000), pg 23 indicates: Wendle Wolf (b. bef. 1780) and his wife Dorothea unknown had Sampson Wolfe (b. abt 1800) who married Dolly Ann Fudge who had Delilah William Eliza Jane Jacob (b. 1847) Could Wendle be a brother to your Jacob Sr.? Or perhaps a son to Lawrence? Also there is that other line ......... Eve Wolfe (b. bef 1785) married to Conrad Fudge on 26 Dec 1798 Could there be a difference in these families simply because one name is spelled WOLF and the other WOLFE??? There are always so many questions Either way - Jacob seem to be a popular name in either Wolf family! ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, January 14, 2006 5:41 AM Subject: [VAWASHIN] Re: Jacob WOLFE Sr. Chilhowie VA Death date 1821 > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACE/1519.2.1.2 > > Message Board Post: > > According to the various posts in this thread -- > > (1) Jacob WOLFE, Sr. was born in 1745 and Jacob WOLFE, Jr. was born in > 1760. BROWN's The Marriages of Washington Co., VA, 1781-1853, page 63]. This was Jacob "Jr.’s" 2nd marriage. Eleanor McREYNOLDS was the daughter of Roland McREYNOLDS. Washington Co., VA Deed Book 1:415-416: John & Ann SCOTT sold 81 acres to Jacob WOLF on 16 Dec 1794. They also sold an adjoining 150 acre tract to Isaac WILLIAMS on 19 Aug 1794 (WC VA DB 1:379). Isaac's tract bordered Colonel Wm. EDMONSON's 600 acre Land Grant located on the Middle Fork of the Holston River. The S.E. corner of Isaac WILLIAM's tract adjoined (or was close to) the 122 acre Ebbing Spring Church tract. Washington Co., VA Deed Book 2:30-31: 20 Feb 1798. Isaac WILLIAMS & Sarah his wife to John ORR, 150 acres for $666.67. Washington Co., VA Deed Book 2:31-32: 20 Feb 1798. Jacob WOLFE & Eleanor his wife to Matthew LONGWELL, 81 acres for 100 pounds. Adjoining John ORR, Isaac WILLIAMS, Jacob WOLFE & James KINCANNON. Ordered to be recorded on the same date. Washington Co., VA Deed dated 22 Jul 1801 from Joseph, Leonard, James, John, and Polly McREYNOLDS, Isaac WILLIAMS & Sally his wife, and Jacob WOLF & Nelly [Eleanor] his wife (heirs and legalees of Rollin McREYNOLDS, deceased) - to - Robert McREYNOLDS for $200.00, a tract of land (it being part of the tract late the property of the said Rollin McREYNOLDS, deceased, and that part where he the said Robert now lives). Bounds: beginning at a sycamore stump and some sprouts on the north bank of the Middle Fork of the Holston River ... John’s part of said tract ... up the river ... [Signatures included Hugh & Mary COLE -- Mary McREYNOLDS married Hugh COLE on 04 Mar 1802 (in WC VA by Rev. Wm. BRUNDIGE, a Baptist minister of St. Clairs Bottom Church)]. Witnesses: Samuel & Joseph McREYNOLDS, & Frederick COPAHEIFER. Logan Co., KY Deed Book A-1, page 441: Indenture 24 Jul 1801. Joseph, Leonard, Robert and James McREYNOLDS, Isaac WILLIAMS, Jacob WOLF, and Mary (Polly) McREYNOLDS of Washington Co., VA, one part and John McREYNOLDS of the other part, 30 acres in said Washington Co., on the Middle Fork of the Holston River.

From what I can tell no one really has any varifible proof of Catherine's maiden name, I know her first name is Catherine because it's on her headstone. All the family records I have end at Jacob here and I've seen serveral various trees that put him in different places with a wife with various last names. I've heard he comes from PA but no one seems to know where that rumor comes from. From everything that I have seem the guys shows up in Chilhowie with alot of money out of know where, and people with that much money usually have a paper trail somewhere. I'd also like to find out how many slaves he might have purchased at the time, I know by the Civil War the family owned 49 slaves, and like to get more history on that also.

    3. Karla, Actually the Wolfe/Wolf line is collateral to my Bailey - White line which is my main interest. But I like to fill out the details as much as I can.. Delilah Wolfe (b. 1 Dec. 1828) married Robert S. Bailey on 15 Nov 1849. Delilah had siblings: William - b. 1832 Eliza Jane - b. 1836 Jacob - b. 1847 There may have been more but these are the ones I know about. Your marriage date (20 Dec 1827) for Sampson and Dolly Ann Fudge is the same as I have but I have different parents for Sampson.................... I have Wendle (Wentel) Wolf and Dorothea (Dolly) unknown as the parents of Sampson (b. abt 1800) and his sister Ann Lavina. I do not have a Lawrence anywhere. Any ideas on this?? Also - do you have any idea where in PA this family originated? OR where they originated before that?
