Can anyone help me with understanding exactly what the difference is between Conscript Guard and Home Guard (if there is a difference). What were their primary duties during the war? What about after the war? What is the significance of using the term "conscript catcher?" The reason I ask is because I have come across the following account of the death of our ancestor's son and am trying to understand the circumstances. On Friday, March 18, 1864 the Abingdon Virginian newspaper carried an article titled "Distressing Occurrence" regarding how Thomas Bailey was killed. "We are pained to have to record a very unpleasant affair, which we fear will result in the death of a most excellent young man, Thomas Bailey, son of Mr. James Bailey of this county. Mr. Baily was a member of Capt. Litchfield's company, which left this place Tuesday on its return to the army of the Potomac. After getting some seven miles east of this place, young Bailey, his brother and another member of the company, left the company with the intention of going to his fathers to tarry during the night. They overtook a young man by the name of Palmer, of the Conscript Guard of this county, and merely out of sport (it should never be done) Bailey applied the epithet of 'conscript catcher' to Palmer, which offended him. Some words ensued between all the parties, and Baily, as we presume from the information we have, merely to have some sport at the expense of Palmer, drew his saber and made a feint of charging upon him. Palmer fired upon Bailey and the ball took effect in the ! body. Mr. Bailey died Wednesday night." I wonder what became of Palmer??

His name is Arthur Dye (b. May 13, 1673 in eastern Virginia) m. Katherine Hopkins, date unknown, (b. abt 1673 in Rappahannock Co., VA. They had at least 10 children. The one that appears to be last is Jacob Dye (b. abt 1726 in eastern VA.) m. to Mary ______ (b. abt 1730 in VA.) They had at least 7 children, one of which was Abram or Abraham (b. 1756 possibly in Halifax Co., VA) m. to Lattis/ Letticia/ Lettuce Coleston (b. abt 1770 in Cecil Co., MD) Feb. 3, 1787 in Caswell Co., NC. They later moved to what is now Russell Co., VA. They had at least 7 children, at least one in Halifax Co., VA, some in Caswell C! o., NC, and some in Russell Co., VA. Branson was probably born in Russell Co., Va. Hope this helps.
Dear Listers: I am helping my son-in-law, Cliff Giles, and his mother, Linda Mason Giles, research her family tree and have traced one of her lines to your county. This information you posted sounds as though it may be the same information I have from long ago. Is your Duncan/Poston information compiled from a lady there in Kingsport, TN? Her name at the moment slips my memory. My question on Joseph Duncan in the family is: After his last child Sarah, his wife either passed away giving birth or devoriced Joseph, I'm trying to find out what happened here and also after her passing the children were sent to other homes because Joseph was unable to take care of them. Is there any possible way to find out this information?? Joseph and Sarah also had a son James Addison Duncan and another daughter Sarah. James Addison is my husband's line in the Duncan Tree. If anyone would be able to help me locate the information I'm searching for, I would greatly appreciate it!
Jack, I have Sampson as the possible brother of Ann Lavinia Wolf who was married to Henry Casner. Would this be the same person you are talking about? Do you have a birth/death date for your Lavinia? Are you saying that Wendel and Lawrence are the same person?
