    1. Death Certificates -- A question about Nancy Pearson (or Pierson) and an offer
    2. First, the question.. do local Washington County death records exist for latter partof 1800s? I'm looking for a Nancy Pierson (or Pearson) who died sometime between 1880 and 1900. Now.. the offer... If anyone out there has access to VA death records and can help me with securing genealogical copies I can offer to do same for that person in NC (I live in Raleigh) ... I have not found any easy access to VA death records and was hoping this might be a way. Let me know!

    2. This is outstanding info ... I actually have two Rogers connections here. 1) Rachel who was either married to or had child with Charles Rogers -- son of James and Rebecca Rogers in WC VA and 2) Noah Barlow who married Mary Jane Shaver. Mary Jane was daughter of Martin Shaver and Eliza Rogers. Eliza and James were siblings and children of Ansel Rogers. Anyone specifically related to these lines ? Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/GBC.2ACE/692.3 Message Board Post: This one was an interesting one to try to sort out. The Chaffin BARLOW and Thomas BARLOW below, who married in Smyth Co., VA are probably brothers. Chaffin?s wife was named Artelia and Thomas named one of his daughters, Artelia J. [also Arletta]. Thomas named one of his sons Chaffin. Leah in the 1850, 1860 & 1870 census is Lettie in the 1880 census and when Arletta Jane got married in 1880. Thomas? son is named Chaffin (age 23) in the 1800 census and James C. (age 2) in the 1860 census and James C. (age 13) in the 1870 census (assuming James middle name is Chaffin). David N. (age 9) in the 1870 census and Noah (age 18) in the 1880 census seems to be the same person. Permelia (age 3) in the 1850 census and Amelia M. (age 13) in the 1860 census are the same person. Sarah M. (age 5) in the 1860 census is also Sarah M. (age 16) in the 1870 census. Rachel (age 10/12) in the 1850 census, Rachel E. (age 11) 1860 census and Rachel (age 30) in the 1880 census. Eliza F. (age 2/12) in the 1870 census and Eliza (age 10) in the 1880 census. As Thomas BARLOW and Joseph BARLOW were neighbors in the 1850 census, odds are that they are related. A Joseph BARLOW was in -- the 1810 census of Washington Co., VA: 10010 - 10101 (page 708). Jacob BARLOW was on a line next to Joseph. the 1820 census of WC: 210010 - 20111 (page 195). the 1830 census of WC: 312100001 - 000210100 (page 230). the 1840 census of WC: 001200010 - 010000010 (page 202). A Joseph BARLOW married Rachel THOMAS in WC VA on 04 Feb 1808 (by Wm. WILSON), D.E. BROWN?s Marriages of WC VA, page 5. On the same page one line above Joseph?s marriage is a marriage for John BARLOW and Susanna LUESS (also by Wm. WILSON). The only date in the record is the day (the 12th of ?). The 1810 census of WC is an important census in that it is enumerated in the order that the census taker made his rounds (neighbor to neighbor in most cases). Therefore page 708 of that census can explain a lot: Line 07 - Palser ROUSE (see below), Line 15 - Sarah THOMAS, Line 16 - Sarah EAKIN (widow of Samuel EAKIN who owned land on Mill Creek, a south branch of the South Fork of the Holston River near the current Smyth Co., VA line). Line 17 - John GROSS (owned land probably spanning what is now the WC - Smyth Co. line and on Gross Creek. John GROSS?s 200 acre tract was east of and adjoined Sarah EAKIN?s 132 acre tract. Note that Thomas BARLOW & Leah GROSS were married 09 Nov 1847. Line 18 - John THOMAS Note that Joseph BARLOW married Rachel THOMAS in WC VA on 04 Feb 1808. Line 19 - Jacob BARLOW. 10100 - 00100 Line 20 - Joseph BARLOW. 10010 - 10101 An earlier Thomas BARLOW, an assignee of Palser ROUSE, was granted a VA Land Grant dated 20 July 1802 in Washington County, VA, for 95 acres on waters of the South Fork of the Holstein River (by a survey dated 22 Oct 1799 [see WC Survey Book 2:163] ), adjoining James SNODGRASS and John ROSENBURN [also ROSENBALM]. Source: Land Office Grants No. 50, pages 222 & 223. The above 95 acres would be located in Widener Valley which is a valley on the south side of the South Fork of the Holston River and includes the area from about Mill Creek near the Smyth/WC border to near Damascus. WC Deed Book 3:33-34 -- Indenture, 14 Mar 1803: Thomas BARLOW (to) John BARLOW, both of WC VA, for 25 pounds -- land on the south side of the South Fork of the Holston River. Adjoining James SNODGRASS and John ROSENBUM [also ROSENBALM]. Recorded 15 Mar 1803. WC Deed Book 3:532-533 -- Indenture, 25 Nov 1806: George MILES & Margaret his wife (to) Thomas BARLOW, 102 acres on Logans Cane branches of Smiths Creek, a south branch of the North Fork of the Holston River. Recorded 16 Dec 1806. WC Deed Book 4:366-- Indenture, 16 Oct 1810: John BARLOW & Susanna his wife (to) Henry WAYMIRES, all of WC VA, for $100 -- land in WC VA on the south side of the South Fork of the Holston River. Witnesses: Jacob (his X mark) ROUSE, Levi LESTER. Recorded 05 Oct 1808. - - - - - - - - - - In the "Families of Washington County and Bristol, Virginia, 1776-1996," page 330 is a family history (# 905) of the THOMAS Family. Part of the article reads: "... Across the border in Smyth County is the James Cemetery. It was a favored burial ground for the BARLOW and GROSS families. There are 72 unmarked graves and eight illegible tombstone here ..." "James THOMAS born circa 1810 in Virginia was a farmer and a shoemaker. We believe his death took place in July 1863 at age 54 years. He is buried in Friendship Cemetery. He married before 1837, but we have not found a marriage record in Washington County. His wife was Sarah "Sally" BARLOW born circa 1814 in Virginia. We believe her to be the daughter of Joseph BARLOW and Rachel THOMAS who were married 4 February 1808 in Washington County. Joseph was listed in 1797 Washington County tithables. We think Jonathan BARLOW born circa 1820 was a sibling of Sally?s. He was listed in the 1850 Washington County census and was a next door neighbor to Sally and James. His wife was Nancy born circa 1825. Their two children were Mima born circa 1844 and Rachel born circa 1846. All of them were Virginia born.." James and Sarah THOMAS had nine children: Joseph, Moses E., Virginia, Rachel, Andrew, Jane, Mary, Sarah and James ... - - - - - - - - - - Bob Ford ==== VAWASHIN Mailing List ==== Visit the Washington County Webpage! http://www.rootsweb.com/~vawashin/

    1. Re: [VAWASHIN] Re: Barlow Family 1880 Census
    2. I'm no Barlow expert for sure.. but Rachel Barlow who was sister to Noah Barlow (and gleaning census info appears to also be sister to Chaffin and Eliza) was either married to Charles Rogers or at least had a son by him -- Leander or "Land". I don't know if this is the same Chaffin you're referring to. Somewhere (I think Sull Co or Johnson Co, TN marriage records) I have that he married Mary J. Shaver. Is this the same family. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: 3 Feb 2006 02:54:16 -0700 Subject: [VAWASHIN] Re: Barlow Family 1880 Census This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
