My grandmother was the daughter of John Lewis and Sarah Counts Taylor; according to her, they moved from Shady Valley TN to Denton's VAlley VA to the Saltville/Tumbling Creek area where they took time out to mingle with another nest of Smiths before most of them went back to Denton's. John Lewis's mother was Sarah Taylor Smith, and his father was Robert Smith who seems to have been made from moonbeams and fairy fluff. I haven't really looked into the whole tangle, but given their famous "peculiar turn" and their dedication to sibling sniping, it promises to be fun. I do not intend to belittle these folk; they were intelligent, kind, and courageous to a fault. But that didn't make them any easier to get along with... I'm new to this genealogy thing, b! ut it seems to be like fox hunting--the chase gets to be more fun than the catch. However, I find I've droned on quite a bit without saying much, so I'll scat. This is a list of first generation family Parents: James Smith (1752-18 Nov 1833 Elizabeth Children: (1) Nancy Smith (13 Oct 1775-) (2) Alexander Smith (1787-20 Jun 1857) (3) Benjamin Smith (1793-Dec) (4) Nathan Smith (-) (5) Sary (Brown) Smith (-) (6) Rebecka (Bledsole) Smith (-) (7) Thomas Smith (-) (8) Grissy Smith (-) (9) Peggy (Gardener) Smith (-) The migration It is believe that my Smith family came to America from England, by way of Scotland in early 1700. Records indicate they were in King & Queen Counties of Virginia. They traveled westward by way of North Carolina, followed the wilderness road through the mountains to what is now Washington County, Virginia. First Generation James Smith The family of James Smith began on the Holston River in the year 1780. This was before Scott County was formed from Washington County. James' will indicated the identity of his children as heirs to the property which was located on Blue Springs creek on the north fork of the Holston, near Maces Springs in what is now Scott County. It is thought that James parents were William Smith and Elizabeth since a deed reference is mentioned as such. James's spouse was Elizabeth Pitts also mentioned in a deed on adjacent land transactions which may be the property that is mentioned in James's will dated 1830. The will identify the location and description of property where this family lived. The family was farming and active in agriculture as this was the main source of food necessary to be sustained through the long winters. James Smith died on 18 Nov 1833. His annual allowance from the government pension amounted to $33.33 and he collected a total of $90.21 in his lifetime. (District of Columbia Pension Roll of 1835, Vol. 3, page 196). George Rouse and Nancy Smith, were listed in marriage register for year 1792 , in Washington County Virginia, marriage register for 1782-1820, volume 34, page 62. Will of Nancy (Smith) Rouse Nancy (Smith) Rouse, I make a will to my son, John Rouse, Tract of land, my tract of land lying south of Clinch Mountain in Little Poor Valley; also on the left of Cave Creek. to my daughters Mary (Rouse) Smith, Elizabeth (Rouse) Percell and Nancy (Rouse) Hart, my household and kitchen furniture. horses, cattle, hogs and all other plantation property to be equally divided between all children. Witness James Campbell and Silas Campbell. Located in Will Book 1 and 2 page 425-426 dated 13 June 1842, Hawkins County, Tennessee. The above Nancy Smith (Rouse) is the daughter of James Smith and Elizabeth who were located in, Scott County Virginia, and mentioned in James Smith Will of 1833 in book 2, page 148, Scott County, Virginia Wills It appears that the H. Coy Allen and Valira (Still) Allen obtained this land from the Rouse family. This property is located by going North west from Rogersville Tn. toward Kyles Ford on route # 70 abt five miles, turn right at sign Cave Spring Baptist Church, Then go two miles to Cave Spring road and take a left at Church sign, Go past Church about ½ mile to a two story house on left, on Cave Springs Road. Nancy (Gardener) Smith, the spouse of Benjamin Smith is buried in the Blue Springs Cemetery on the North Fork of the Holston River, South East of Hiltons, Virginia. Notes and Family History for Alexander Smith, and Elizabeth Alexander Smith was Listed in 1820 Census for Scott County, Virginia. male 1, 0-10, male 1, 26-45 Female 3, 1-16, Fem 1, 10-16, Fem 1, 16-26 Alexander Smith, was listed as 60 years of age in 1850 Scott County Va. US. Census, entry # 169. This would make his date of birth at 1790. Also listed was his spouse Elizabeth, age 55-dob 1795, from N.C., son Harrison, age 28-dob 1822, daughter Mary, age 26-dob 1824, son John, age 24- dob 1826, and daughter Nancy A., age 17- dob 1833. This data collected by Arthur Clark, dtd 4-7-97. Scott County record of death book, 1853-1870, Page 11. Alexander Smith died at age of 70, dated 20 June 1857, Cause of death comsuption (T.B.). Death records list his parents as James and Elizabeth Smith. Listing his spouse as Elizabeth. This death was reported by his brother, Benjamin Smith. This would make Alexander birth date 1787. This also indicates that his brother Benjamin Smith had not died by drowning under the ice in the Holston River as of this time. Or this Benjamin who died under the ice may be Alexander's son who was Benjamin A. Smith. This information was passed down by the older Smith Family. This data entry by Arthur Clark 4-7-97. Scott County Cemetery records indicate Alexander Smith death, and burial as being buried on the north fork of the Holston River, which cemetery is not known. (Note) On 28 August 1834, Alexander sold his interest in the land he inherited from his father for the sum of $200.00 to his brother, Benjamin. The tract consisted of 128 acres and was situated on the north bank of the Holston River, deed bearing the date 27 Nov. 1798. (Scott Co. Va. That may just be an old family tale, though.
