Linda was a great resource -- I visited Warren Heritage Society coming from Connecticut to do so -- when I arrived, they could only be open a short time for me. The folks tried to be helpful but what can a researcher do in an hour or so. I looked around and saw an overwhelming collection of stuff that needed organization -- I really want to do some real research there but am confused by the collection and hours. Mary and VAWarren gang, Mary, thanks for the kind words. Did my heart good :) I have good news. The Warren Heritage Society has seen the error of their ways. The Board of Directors has approved the hiring of a part time archivist for their Hale Archives. I was offered the opportunity for this new position. However, I had to decline the offer. I was seeking full time work (and have, just today, accepted another job which starts Thursday). I've been assured they will seek another person for the job (Mary, your phone is going to ring tomorrow). I hope Warren County researchers will take advantage of the wonderful collections archived at the society. There are some true jewels in the collections. Again, Mary, thank you! When I left, the many letters and phone calls to board members is what brought them to decide to hire someone. I appreciate all the efforts everyone has made on my behalf and most importantly, for the future of the archives! Nineveh is in Warren County. Prior to the creation of Warren (March 1836), it was in Frederick County. There were many Quakers in the early days of Nineveh. Just in case... Newtown is now Stephens City, VA in Frederick County. It was also known as Stephensburg. In the book "Hopewell Friends History, 1734-1934, Frederick County, Virginia" on page 497, in a list of "Disownments at Hopewell" is " 6[day] 9[month] 1762 Elenor Brownfield (formerly Archer)[person disowned] Married contrary to discipline [reason for disownment]" Perhaps this is a daughter of your Jeremiah ARCHER????? Hello, I've been working on putting together an updated version of the book STEER GENEALOGY (Some Genealogy of a Steer Family) by Isaac S. Russell since about 1988. I've recently discovered these Listserves for genealogy in various counties so I thought I'd take a shot at this in order to collect more data for my Steer Genealogy records. Here's a brief account of the beginnings of the family: Isaac Steer married Ruth Mercer. They came from Ireland to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with their daughter Katherine. Three sons: Nicholas, John & Joseph preceeded them to this country. The family was affiliated with The Society of Friends (Quakers) where many continued for generations to be members. The family eventually migrated down into Virginia settling primarily in Frederick & Loudoun Counties from which descendants spread to other areas in this country. Isaac Russell's book was printed back in 1891 so as you can see much has happened since then. His book primarily dealt with the descendants of Joseph (Isaac & Ruth's son). I am trying to gather info. on ALL of the descendants of Isaac and Ruth Steer, or at least as much as I am able to collect. Being that the family is predominantly Quaker finding accurate info. hasn't been too difficult. I have access to the books written by William Wade Hinshaw which I am using now to further add to the Steer Family records but again much has happened since Hinshaw published his Quaker records. This family has branched out into many different surnames as well, all which can be traced back to Isaac and Ruth Steer. Some of the more common surnames found in this family are: JACKSON, ROBINSON, BROWN, SEXTON, HOLLINGSWORTH, FENTON, DEAN, KIRK, CLEVENGER, WHITACRE, WALKER, PARKINS, MAHANEY, MARKER, SWAYNE, POPE, HOUGH, GRIFFITH, LYTLE (or LITLER), RICHIE, WICKERSHAM, WOOD, RUSSELL, NEVITT. If you believe you are a descendant of Isaac and Ruth Steer I would like to hear from you. Could you please send me whatever complete info. you can give me on your branch of the family up to today's times plus what you know on collateral branches in your line. I need full names of individuals, birth & death dates, places of birth & death, marriage dates and places, spouses full names with birth, death dates and places as well and also the names of the spouses' parents with the mother's maiden name and the same for each child descending from the couple. If you don't have the complete info. I requested, that's ok, just give me what you can. If you wish you can include some biography about some of the individuals. Whatever information you can give me will be greatly appreciated as I try to put together the most up to date version of this genealogy as possible. You can either send this to me by either e-mail at this address steer_family@hotmail.com or you can mail it to me at this address if you don't have an e-mail provider: Michael L. McKay 115 Morgan St. Winchester, VA 22601-3829 Thank you for your attention to this. I'll reprint this letter at various intervals in order for new listserve subscribers to read. Hello all, We have just joined your mailing lists and have obtained a copy of a reconstructed Census for 1720. We will look up your names for free. The granny's are a group of ladies, and some gentlemen now, that do research at the National Archives for people. They also go to the Denver Library which is rated the 5th best Genealogy library in the country. It has a section for every State in the Union and lots of National Publications. If your needing things looked up, give me an E-mail. Most things cost less than $4.00. With permission from our requestors, the information obtained for people will be shared with anyone interested in the surname to the mailing lists. Sincerely, Jim (for the Granny's)
