    3. April 15, 1921 The Tazewell Timber Corporation, operating the large boundary of timber near Gratton, which has been closed down for several months, has advertised for men for various kinds of work, and are planning to begin work in earnest as soon as a competent force can be assembled. The company will employ a large force of men. The starting on the brick plant at Tip Top, which has been idle so long, is good news to the people of that vicinity, and to the county, as is also the opening again of the lumber plant at Gratton. The Tip Top plant will be under the management again of Captain George SHAFER, who operated the plant successfully for a number of years, when he resigned, and was succeeded by Rev. Mr. SHUFF. Captain SHAFER has been living in Pennsylvania and Philadelphia for a number of years, and the county is glad to welcome this genial gentleman home again. A wedding of interest was solemnized at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Howard SUMMERS on Wednesday, April 13th, when their daughter, Lula, became the bride of David William SARGENT. Rev. HODGE, pastor of the bride officiating. The house was beautifully decorated with evergreen and cut flowers and lighted with pink candles. Mr. Charles E. SUMMERS, brother of the bride, was best man, and Mr. W.E. TICKLE acted as groomsman. The bride wore a dress of ivory satin and lace. After a short visit to the grooms home, Mr. and Mrs. SARGENT will be at home at Big Four, West Virginia, where Mr. SARGENT holds a responsible position. On Tuesday, April 12th a linen shower was given in honor of the bride by her mother and sister. A very enjoyable occasion was had after which a salad course was served. Liberty Hill Honor Roll - Seventh grade: Nell HUMPHREY, Elsie LAWSON. Fifth grade: Nancie HUMPHREY, Ellen OSBORNE, Alta STEVENSON, Hubert LAWSON, Gracie BOWLING, Hubert PEERY. Third grade: Lula CRABTREE, Kate CRABTREE, Melvin ANGLES. First grade: Ella BOWLING, Edith BOWLING, Sam ANGLES. Pupils having the most head marks: Firth grade: Ellen OSBORNE. Third grade: Nannie CRABTREE. Second grade: Clara JOHNSTON; Pupils receiving prizes for most improvement in writing; Ella Mae BOWLING, Nannie HUMPHREY, Arthur JOHNSON. The highest grades for the school term was made by Hubert PEERY. A gold medal and chain lost out of trunk between Liberty Hill and Clinchburg, initials D.H.S. on front and L.B. SUMMERS on other side. Mr. L.T. WYNN (better known as Fred) died suddenly in Burke's Garden on April 8th. He had gone to the farm of MR. R.M. LAWSON for seed oats, had loaded his wagon, and while talking to Mr. LAWSON suddenly collapsed, living only a few minutes. He had, it is said, high blood pressure for some time. Besides a wife, who was a Miss HUDDLE, he leaves two children - Mrs. A.S. BOWLING and I.T. WYNN. The funeral and burial took place on Sunday 10th, conducted by Rev. A.S. ULM, pastor of the Methodist Church. Deceased was 61 years old. Mrs. Robert MEEK is reported critically ill from pneumonia at her home in Burke's Garden. For several days her illness greatly alarmed her family and friends. As this paper goes to press her condition is reported as some what improved and strong hopes are entertained of her recovery. Her brother, J. Kelly GROSECLOSE, Blacksburg, and other relatives, are at her bedside. Several business changes have taken place in the Shawver Mill neighborhood recently, and others negotiating. Pruett Brothers at Shawver Mill have sold their mercantile business and 10 acres of land, to Crockett STOWERS and sons. Consideration not stated. John SHUFFLEBARGER has advertised for sale his blacksmith shop and other personal property. Other sales and changes are rumored. It is to be hoped that these good Clear Fork people will not be lost to the county in this shuffle. Looking on from the outside one cannot always tell. Men have reason for changing that are unknown to the public, but it seems to outsiders that Clear Fork is a mighty good place in which to live and rear the children. BURKES GARDEN ------------------------------------- Mrs. Robert MEEK has been desperately ill with pneumonia for the past several days. To her bedside have been called her two daughters, Mesdames FUGUA and POOLE; also her brothers, Messrs. KELLY and Frank GROSECLOSE. The whole community was shocked Friday afternoon when the news was flashed around, "Mr. Fred WYNN dropped dead." He had gone to the home of Mr. LAWSON to procure some grain when the end came. While he and Mr. LAWSON were in conversation, Mr. WYNN suddenly staggered and fell breathing only a few moments. The deceased had been suffering from what is commonly known as high blood pressure for several years. The funeral was held from Central Church Sunday afternoon in the presence of one of the largest crowds that ever gathered for a similar occasion. Rev. A.S. ULM officiating. Mr. WYNN was a member of the Methodist church, which church he joined as a young man. Messrs. George MOSS, Mike CASSELL, Ewing LAWSON attended the sale of Pure bred cattle at Wytheville last week. Miss Chance teacher of Home Economics in Burke's Garden Junior High School, was called home last week by the death of her sister in law. Mr. Alex MEEK is suffering from an ugly wound just about the right knee, which wound was secured when Mr. MEEK, "de'tailing" some lambs, let the knife slip. Mr and Mrs. Leland EDWARDS are the happy parents of a fine baby boy, Arnold STANFORD. Mrs. John THOMPSON is suffering from a severe attack of rheumatism, being confined to her bed much of the time. TIP TOP ------------------------------ Cecil HARMAN, colored, age 60, a citizen of Tip Top was operated on at a Bluefield hospital on Saturday and died on Sunday night. He was buried yesterday. He leaves a wife and 8 children, several grand children. Floyd CATRON, 3 year old child of Creed and Sally CATRON, died here last week. Mr. David YATES, who was seriously ill last week with hemorrhages of the stomach, has improved very much, and is now able to be out. He has sold out his mercantile business to Mr. John HARMAN, of McDowell County, who will conduct the store. Dr. Isaac PIERCE, of Tazewell, was here yesterday to see George HARMAN, colored, who has rheumatism. ------------------------ In the Clerk's Office of the Circuit Court of the County of Tazewell, on the 14th day of April, 1921. 2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Pearl SNAPP which was taken at the VA Photo Co. in Tazewell, Virginia. The photograph appears to have been taken in the late 1890's or early 1900's with Pearl noted as 16 years of age at the time. I'm hoping to locate someone from Pearl's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    3. Esther, September 9, 1860, Sarah D. Noel, 24 yrs. 5 months, 22 days, born Taz. Co., Va. daughter of Fielding and Sophia Noel married George W. Burgess, 21 years, 6 months, 14 days, born in Taz. Co, Va., son of James and Frances Burgess. They were married by James Calfee. This was in Taz. Co., Virginia, Marriage Book 3, 1854-1866 written by Pauline Haga. She was the only one I could find in the book. What was Fielding's middle initial. There is a George W. S. Noel, I was thinking the W may stand for Washington? They have his dad listed as F. S. Noel. I know it is a long shot, but it could be your Washington Noel?????? Janet Peters harlessj@citlink.net

    3. Esther, I don't find any of the marriages for the Noel family in the time frame mentioned. I do find marriages in 1860 --George W. S. Noel marries Mary A. Fox. George is listed as the son of F. S. and Sophrani Noel. He is listed as being born in Pulaski County. You might check there for the other marriages. Hope this is helpful. Hope this is of some help to you and your Dillion research! glenn belcher Cathy Brubaker wrote: >Does anyone know the parents of these Dillions? 3. February 16, 1912 ROCKY GAP Several from this place attended quarterly meeting at Round Bottom Saturday and Sunday. The school at Sunny Point closed Friday and the teacher, Miss Lena GOLLEHON will leave on the morning train Monday for Bluefield, where she will spend sometime with her sister, Mrs. FERRELL, before returning to her home at Ceres. The train on the New River, Holston and Western wrecked Friday afternoon on its way to Narrows and the train that should have reached this place Saturday morning at ten, did not arrive until 5 PM. Mr. and Mrs. Mason STOWERS and little daughter, of Bluefield, have been visiting relatives on Clear Fork. The sick on Wolf Creek are all reported better. Mr. Newt WILEY and family spent Sunday with his father, Mr. Jim WILEY. Winton STOWERS, who works in Bluefield, came over and spent Saturday night and Sunday with his homefolks. THAT APPLE BUTTER STIRRER ONCE MORE AND FINALLY The apology offered for mentioning this lost stirrer, if apology is necessary, is, that considerable interest is being taken in the matter by anxious friends of this paper, and several clues have developed. A friend from Indiana ventures the guess with some degree of confidence that the stirrer will probably be found in Burkes Garden. Another says Clear Fork, and another, still, thinks it has left the state, and so it goes, and it seems will continue to keep on going - we mean the stirrer. As to the Burke's Garden clue, the only Burke's Garden people who have been about the Editor's premises within the last year or two were John P. GOSE and some of his men, and perhaps Hiram STOWERS. But there men are aft too well known to suffer from any such suspicion, besides none of them are fond of pulling an apple butter stirrer, and so, the clue runs out - nothing to it. Crockett STOWERS was here from Cove Creek and the delicate matter was mentioned to him in as gentle manner as possi! ble, and he replied promptly, and with some warmth, that any man or set of men, in Tazewell or any other county, who said that he got the blamed old stirrer was a liar. CROCKETT used to live neighbor to the Editor, and this fact may have caused some suspicion, but after talking with him it appeared clear that he knew nothing of the lost article. As to the location in other States, the clues will not be followed. In case or any attempt to bring it back to Virginia, if found, a requisition from the Grovernor of Virginia might be necessary, and this would stir up strife. So the Editor has concluded to let the doggoned old stirer go. It was a little loose in the shank, anyway. CEDAR BLUFF Mrs. J.F. BROWN was a pleasant caller at Mrs. H.P. The Board met in the Court House, the Clerk's office not being large enough to accommodate the number of citizens who thus expressed their interest in the big move. Bids were received on the construction of 41.22 miles in Clear Fork, 31.32 in Jeffersonville and 33.32 miles in Maiden Spring district. These roads were laid off in sections, and bids made secordingly. In Clear Fork District there were eight sections, Maiden Spring six, and in Jeffersonville, six, aggregating 106.34 miles of road. The aggregate amounts of the bids was, $607,844. 80, as follows: Jeffersonville district, $176,596.69; Clear Fork, $218, 491.58; and Maiden Spring, $212, 756.53, a little over $5716 per mile, on an average. Some sections cost much more than others. One section in the Clear Fork district running as high as ! ten thousand and over, per mile, and one as low as about three thousand dollars per mile. After careful consideration of all the bids the Board decided to reject the entire number of bids, and virtually decided to build the roads by force account. The bids appeared to the Board to be higher than the roads can be built for Supervisor C.A. WAGNER has just completed a mile and over of about an average road, and the entire cost, not counting wear and tear of machinery, was about $3580 and said to be fine work. It is understood that the Board will buy the necessary machinery, and break dirt as soon as the weather will permit. However, bids for constructing certain sections in Maiden Spring district are thought to be quite as cheap as can be done by force contract, and these bids may be accepted and it is said that certain other bids are being gone over again, and may finally be accepted by the Board. That the main bulk of the work will be done by force account seems assured at t! his time. Among the large crowd present on Tuesday there was a noticeable spirit of good feeling and hopefulness. For nearly a year the road question has been somewhat unsettled, and now that the work is likely to be pushed forward at once everybody is happy. The continued bad weather has put a stop to almost all kinds of business, and when the sun shines again and work opens there will be a rush. The dirt will fly on the roads on all the districts. One noticeable feature of the bids was the absence of any kind of a bid on the road running from the corporate limits of this town to the Clear Fork district line, and on the road from North Tazewell to Wittens Mills, along Clinch River. It was thought that these sections would be the easiest constructed of any. The section of road that will be the costliest built in the county is located near Graham - about five miles, half of which will have to be built through solid rock. It is stated that contractors are reconsidering their bids on thi! s section of road and that contracts may be let for same within a short time. RAVEN Misses Ida HORTON, Margie HAMILTON, Trula GRADY and Martha BOYD, attended services in Cacles Chapel Saturday night. Rose Brown PEERY did a lot of genealogy way before computers. She was the mother of my brother-in-law, Martin PEERY. Rose died about 3 years ago and Martin died 2 years ago. My sister-in-law (who was a CONLEY) wanted someone who did genealogy to have them so I have them for now. NOW, one on of the papers Rose Brown PEERY wrote... (looks like) Yantes- Archives page 238. (not sure, I couldn't make out her writing) Lathram d 5 Dec 1725? or 35. (There, again, the writing was not readable.) Now, did I add to the confusion? LOL Neda in VA
