    3. Sheila, I noticed your posting about the Harmans from the Tazewell Co., Heritage book. I also am searching the Harmans. Does your book list a father for Solomon Wesley Day b-abt 1820. He married Jane Billips dau of James Richard Billips and Nancy Wright. One of Solomon daughters married my great grandfather. Have some information on Janes ancestors thanks to the Taxewell Co., web sight, but have none on Solomons ancestors. Sharon __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. Am trying to forward this to Shawna Whitt. Anyone else on the list have any ideas for me to connect?? Betty Crabtree ----- Original Message ----- From: Steinetz/Crabtree To: wd.farm2001@yahoo.com Sent: Sunday, May 15, 2005 4:06 PM Subject: Rose Family Shawna Whitt, I am trying to locate the ties to my Rose family. Saw your database on rootsweb.com/worldconnect. Seems your Rose's and my Rose's were in and about the same place. McDowell Co., and Tazewell Co., Since you seem to have some info of Rose families in that vicinity, I am wondering if you might have any information that might help me connect my Grandparents to the correct family. I am one of those that have attached my Rose family to the wrong bush. At least to the wrong family. I am pretty sure that there is a connection. Would you know of any connection to the Beavers family? My Grandfather was supposed to be Stonewall Jackson Rose / Jackson Lee Rose / Jack Rose. Born abt. 1889 in Russell Co., Va. He died in West Virginia in the middle to late 1950's, about Winding Gulf, West Virginia. He married: In 1901 to Elvira Beavers, born abt., 1880 and died abt., 1918. Areas that they were in are: Virginia: Tazewell Co., Tazewell, Horsepen and Bishop. West Virginia: McDowell Co., Yukon, Caretta, and War. Elvira's mother and father is supposed to be, Alexander R. Beavers and Mary Jane Barnett. From Tazewell Co and Big Creek, McDowell Co., Children of Jack Rose and Elvira Beavers; 1. Rufus, born in Bishop, Va., died in Caretta 1965, married Dorothy Doris Mae Lowe of Iaegar, W.Va. 2. Flora (Florrie), born abt. 1899, married to ? Clevenger. Children: Goldie and Elmer. 3. Cora (Corrie), (twin to Dora), born abt. 1907, married to ? Shrewsbury. 4. Dora (Dorrie), (twin to Cora), born abt. 1907. marries to ? Hyder. 5. Martha, born abt. 1909, married to Charlie Rose and Glen Rose. 6. Della (Deallie), born ??, married to Shrewsbury. 7. Lona, Loma, (Lommie), born ??, married ?? Jones. 8. Scioto Savanna (Otie) Rose, born Nov., 12, 1912 in Horsepen, Va., This is my mother. She married Arleigh Clelle Crabtree. After the death of Elvira the children were all seperated to different homes and lost contact with one another. Mother saw her father only once after they were "given out", "fostered". That was in the late 1940's or early 1950's. Thank you for any consideration and information you may share. Please contact me at: circlekb@citlink.net Betty Crabtree

    3. Anyone wishing a DAR or SAR worksheet for membership in either organization please email me with your name and mailing address. Start with yourself......birth certificate, your marriage license if you're married. Your parents birth and marriage records. Death certificates have a lot of information on them......date of death, birthday, places, spouse name, parents names and places. Use census records, Bible records if old (copy the inside cover that gives date of publication). If you're from Tazewell County, Harman's Annals and Archives of the Pioneers of Tazewell County are simply wonderful! The Tazewell County Historical Society has both of these for sale. The library may also have them in the Virginia Room. You may have a common Revolutionary War soldier with members of the DAR. Check and see or I can for you. Just keep going back, one generation at a time and prove it, until you reach your Revolutionary War soldier. Let me know if I can help or guide you. 3. 1911 February 3 POUNDING MILL ------------------ Jan 31 - Mr. Cosbie ROBINETT came down from Tip Top this morning to visit relatives and friends. Mr. M.B. CROCKETT, Tazewell, was here yesterday to see Miss Bertha HARRIS who has been very ill with appendicitis since Thursday of last week. Relatives and friends are apprehensive of her recovery. Dr. Rees GILLESPIE was down from Tazewell Saturday and Sunday to see his niece, Mrs. J.B. HURT, who has been prostrate with grief. Mrs. HURT is better. Miss Margaret WILLIAMS was here Saturday from Richlands. Miss Effie WILLIAMS spent the last of the week with homefolks here. Misses Pearl MCGUIRE and Grace SAYERS spent from Friday to Sunday at Cedar Bluff and Steelsburg respectively. R.K. GILLESPIE made a business trip to Russell County returning Friday. W.B. STEELE made a business trip to Laurel today. Dr. J.H. SMITH made a professional visit here yesterday. Miss Lettie RINGSTAFF and Mrs. Bird BREWSTER are reported better. Mrs. R.M. SPARKS and little son Norman are spending a week with her sister, Mrs. Raymond ELLIS at Norton. G.C. SHAMBLIN and family have gone to Saltville where they will probably reside. Mrs. Mary O'KEEFFE, Tazewell, spent Thursday night with her daughter, Mrs. R.K. GILLESPIE. The entire community was greatly shocked and much grieved over the sudden death of Mr. John B. HURT on the 26th. He was 49 years of age, a man of sterling qualities, honest, kind, generous and accommodating. A merchant of this town for the past 13 years, also a farmer and grazier. He will be greatly missed in the church, Sunday School, everywhere. His popularity was unbounded, his friends could not be counted. He leaves a wife and eight children, three boys and five girls, the youngest being six years of age. The four oldest were away at school and the death came like a thunder bolt to their young and loving hearts. Miss Margaret was at Bethany College, Bethany, west Virginia; Miss Barbara at Tazewell High School, Tazewell; and Messrs George and Jim Bob at the V.P.I. Blacksburg. We understand that the two oldest George and Miss Margaret will not return to their schools, although the former is of the class of 1911 graduates. Messrs. Fred and Harvey George GILLESPIE who were called here on account of the death of their uncle, Mr. J.B. HURT, have returned to the V.P.I. at Blacksburg. Some beautiful floral tributes from V.P.I. cadets, friends of the Hurt boys, arrived on Saturday p.m., too late for the funeral and burial of Mr. HURT. The following are some from this place who attended the funeral and burial of Mr. John B. HURT at Tazewell on Saturday: Mr. and Mrs. R.K. GILLESPIE, Mr. and Mrs. W.B. STEELE, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. ALTIZER, Messrs. John, Fred and Harvey George GILLESPIE. Miss Cora CHRISTIAN spent Sunday at home with her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. H.W. CHRISTIAN. Mr. J.P. WILSON, the accommodating agent at this place returned today from a trip east, and is loathe to tell much about it, but his friends say however, "he has been away on a courting expedition." --------------- The burial of the remains of the late John B. HURT, whose tragic death was reported in last week's paper, took place here last Saturday morning, in Jeffersonville Cemetery, at 12 PM. The body, accompanied by members of his family, relatives and a number of sorrowing friends, reached Tazewell on Saturday mornings train, and were met at the depot by a number of Tazewell people. The funeral services, conducted by Rev. Mr. WILEY, of the Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. Mr. HALL, of the Presbyterian church, were held at the residence of George W. GILLESPIE, father in law of the deceased, in the presence of a very large crowd of friends from different sections of the county. He was widely and most favorably known all over the county, and many of them wept as they looked for the last time, upon his face. He was a member of the Methodist church, and would have been 50 years of age had he lived until next May. He leaves a widow and eight children. Two children are dead. All of his ! children were present at the burial services. --------------- At Stowersville, Va., on Wednesday evening January 18, a very quite but pretty wedding took place in the home of Mr. and Mrs. R.B. ROBINETT, when their pretty young daughter, Bessie Lee, became the bride of Howard C. STOWERS, a young farmer, of Bethany, Mo., formerly of Bland County, Va. and son of Sheriff George W. STOWERS. Rev. W.A. GOSE officiated. After the ceremony a sumptuous supper was served. The bride received many nice presents. The young couple will leave Saturday for Missouri where they will make their future home. We regret very much to give up Bessie, as she was one of the most worthy young girls of our neighborhood. I will offer for sale to the highest bidder, on Saturday, 18th of February, the following: 6 horses; 2 two year old horses and five yearlings; 2 milk cows; 4 two year old shorthorn heifers; 4 Jersy yearling heifers, and one thoroughbred Jersy bull; half interest in Shorthorn bull. 46 ewes and two bucks, ewes will bring lambs within next few weeks; 7 hogs. It is said that suit will be instituted at he next term of the Circuit Court to have the property sold, if possible, and it remains to be seen whether such a decree will be entered and if so the property will be sold at public auction. We are asked to state that Mr. Robert R. WITTEN, who lives just west of town, will be baptized by Rev. Mr. WAYTS, the 3rd., Sunday in this month, at 3:30 o'clock, near his home. The foundation is being built by Ike GEORGE and the carpenters work will be done by W.P. BARNETT.

    3. Guys and ladies, I'm simply amazed that not one of you lucky people have neither joined the SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) nor the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) with Hezekiah Whitt as your patriot ancestor that I'm aware of. I know none of the ladies have joined. Hezekiah Whitt would be the first Whitt on the rolls of Tazewell County as a patriot in the DAR yearbook. In fact, he is not even listed in the 3 volume set of the National Patriot Index as even being in the Revolutionary War and he won't unless one of you join and bring his name to light. If he were my ancestor, he would already have been listed as a supplemental. I would be proud to claim him as mine, and as a matter of fact, Charles Dahnmon Whitt (in Kentucky) said he would share him with me. Jimmy Steele has also been a hard worker for your cause. I reckon he must like you Whitts awful well. I say, I do challenge any of you to submit an application for the DAR or SAR. I will sign this as a Whitt fan, Susie Shrader, Regent of Fort Maiden Spring DAR and President of the Tazewell County Historical Society.(And I smile:) ) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Darrell Lowe" <bigd4vt@adelphia.net> To: <VATAZEWE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 17, 2005 9:26 AM Subject: Re: [VA-TAZEWELL] Whitt-Lowe Cemetery update > I know it sounds a little hard to believe, but it's actually an age old > technique that our ancestors used to locate graves. > > I don't think I'm supposed to post links here, but if you will do a web > search for "Grave Dowsing by Brenda Marble" you can read the article that I > learned the technique from.
