November 17, 1911 POUNDING MILL ------------------------------------------------- Rev. and Mrs. G.W. DOYLE and baby went to Richlands Sunday to held a week's meeting. Mrs. W.B. STEELE, Mrs. George BREWSTER, Misses Cora BREWSTER and Mary Belle ALTIZER, and others, attended church at Maxwell Sunday night. Rev. Anderson BROWN closed the meeting and left today for Saltville where he will hold a ten day's meeting. Mr. George HANKINS died at the home of his son, Sidney, near here on Sunday night of tuberculosis, and was buried today at the Altizer graveyard near Thomas HANKINS. Mr. R.M. SPARKS was called to Gap Store last week on account of the death of his father, Mr. Jonas SPARKS, which occurred on Wednesday at 2 pm. Interment took place on Thursday afternoon near his home. He was 78 years of age and died of dropsy. Mrs. M.J. STURGILL, Mrs. W.B. STEELE and Mrs. A.J. NEWEY, visited Mrs. Blair YOUNG at her home one mile east of Maxwell on Monday. Mrs. YOUNG has been very ill for some time is now unable to sit up. Rev. PANGLE, of the M.E. Church, South preached his first sermon here for the conference year, on Sunday, to a large congregation. Mr. and Mrs. Tom ENGLAND have moved to Jackson Ky. Rev. Robert M. PRUETT was here the latter part of the week, attending the meeting and visiting home folks. ---------------------------- Miss Sallie WAGONER, gave a candy stew Saturday evening, November 11 in honor of her teacher, Miss May Wilda AKERS, it being her birthday. Those present were Misses Mamie and Nettie WAGONER, ora and Delphia MARSH, May TABOR, Dora and Ella May HARRY, Falls Mills, and Miss Mary TILLER, Graham. Messrs BERKELEY and Roscoe TABOR, Arthur, Oscar and Green WAGONER, Samuel TAYLOR, Arthur Marsh, Felix HILL, and Messrs. PERDUE and DAUGHERTY of Gary, West Virginia. They made quite a lot of candy and spent the evening in playing interesting games which all seemed to enjoy and a late hour, candies and cakes were served and after thanking their hostess for giving them such a delightful time, all left for their homes wishing Miss AKERS many bright and happy birthdays. ------------------- Tazewell's water supply is giving trouble constantly. The system must be defective somewhere. It was remarked the other day that "this town has the sorriest water system in the State." Perhaps so, and perhaps not. Anyway, it is always giving trouble. The water, much of the time is unfit for drinking and cooking purposes, and scarcely fit for stock. One day this week a citizen on Tazewell Avenue drew and threw away at least a thousand gallons of water before he could get a good, clear drink, and there are others. The town council seems unable to handle the trouble. For years and years the troubles have come up, and likely to contineu, until a council can be gotten that will take hold of the matter in a business way. For years, the town has been fooling with a lot of seeps and mud holes at the foot of the mountain called "springs" some of which are mere drinking places for stock and all of them combined inadequate, even if they were normally strong, to furnish a supply for the town. Enough money has been wasted "monkeying" with the present system to build a good one, and like some of the roads of the county, has cost enough to build twice what we now have. This is a serious question, and calls for heroic measures. The health of the town is at stake, and the "City Fathers" who voluntarily assumed the responsibility of running this town and managing its affairs should do something. This paper suggested years ago, and has repeated frequently since, that eventually the town must get its water supply from Clinch River. It must come to this, sooner of later. If necessary issue bonds for $10,000 or more if needed, and build a good pump house at the river to supply the town, and be done with it. As long as the town trusts to a few intermittent springs for our water supply there will be endless trouble and expense and half the time no water, and the other half none fit to use.

She died on December 16th at her home in Burke's Garden, in the 76th year of her age. Besides her husband, James R. MCMEANS, she leaves four children, Iredell, Hugh, and Lee and Mrs. Eli BANE. She was a member of the Baptist Church and a woman whom everybody respected and loved. The residence of George TAYLOR, who lives on W.F. HARMAN'S place east of town, was destroyed by fire on last Monday night. Mr. TAYLOR has a wife and ten children, who were made homeless by the fire. The origin of the fire is unknown, but it is stated that the family had a narrow escape from being burned or suffocated by the smoke and gasses, which was not discovered until the home was almost destroyed. John DILLS, a well known citizen of the county was arrested this week by deputy U.S. Marshall George HARRISSON, and will have to face a jury in the United States Court. DILLS was caught red handed at plying his trade in this town; and is charged with having sold liquor openly in different parts of the county. A report reached here yesterday of a very disastrous fire at Welch, in which the business portion of the town was destroyed. Our information is that the loss by fire is over two hundred thousand dollars, that two banks, the Hatfield hotel, and several other modern buildings were destroyed. The origin of the fire is unknown. Coeburn, Va., Jan. 12 - On last Thursday evening, Miss Maude JONES, of Graham, and Mr. Allen J. The bride is prominently connected at Graham and visiting her cousin here, Mrs. JOHNSON. After the couple returned to Tom's Creek they were given a royal reception with a ten pound shower of rice and later in the evening were given a "shiverse" with tin pans and brass horns. The couple were the recipients of a number of handsome presents from their friends in this community. Freeling, Va, Jan 9 - The little five year old son of John BAKER had his leg broken yesterday. The boy was handicapped by a crippled leg and in attempting to step from the door onto the ground he fell with above results. A meeting of the citizens of Clear Fork district will he held at Tip Top on January 28th, at 11 am, for the purpose of giving the people more information in regard to the bond issue and correcting some of the locations agreed upon at our last meeting. H.S. BOWEN, J. Walter GRAYBEAL, William PRUETT, Committee. Mrs. Margaret WHITE, for many years resident of Five Oaks, died at the home of her sister in law, George HOWARD, at Welch on Wednesday night, from pneumonia. It is stated that she had only been ill a short time. Mrs. WHITE was past sixty, and is survived by two daughters, and two sons, viz: Mrs. George HOWARD, of Welch; Mrs. J.S. MCMILLAN, of Ford Valley, Georgia; Will WHITE, of California and Austin WHITE, of Bluefield. The burial occurred yesterday afternoon near Austin WHITE'S on Bluestone. ------ In Memoriam - Louisa G., wife of Thurston D. HURT, and daughter of the late Cornelius and Theresa Gose MCGUIRE, was born, reared and married in Tazewell County, Virginia and departed this life August 26, 1910, aged 58 years. She is survived by seven children, viz: Durwind, George, John, David, Charlie, Sallie, and Willie, the youngest being 14 years of age. One boy preceded her to the Throne above. Two brothers, A.J. MCGUIRE, Pounding Mill, two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth CECIL, Indian, and Mrs. W.W. YOST, of Gap Store, all of Virginia are also left to mourn their loss. She was converted when 20 years of age, joined the Methodist church, and lived a consistent Christian life until she was called from Time into Eternity. Her many relatives and friends in Tazewell County will remember Lou's jovial and happy disposition which she retained to the last. She had not been well for the last eleven years and was confined to her bed two weeks prior to her death. May God comfort the bereaved ones, and meet her in Heaven. A Friend.

Hello Nancy, I have a 1800 US Census Index CD from FamilyQuest. On the back it says, "Although they were populated, the states of Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Jersey, Tennessee, VIRGINIA, and the territories of Indiana and Northwest do not have census schedules available [for 1800]." Listers, you are welcome to attend this event. Please feel free to forward this message to anyone who may be interested, especially local media in Bluefield, Richlands, and Bristol. My mother is John Whitaker's great niece and has worked hard to get his recognition after all these years. She especially wants any of John Whitaker and Nancy Nuckles descedants to attend. Please call the number listed in the message below for more information. Cheryl Tate Duke After one hundred and forty years, John Whitaker of Tazewell County, is receiving recognition for his service in the Civil War. He is buried in an unmarked grave in the Whitaker Family cemetery at 2526 Indian Creek Road, Cedar Bluff, VA. His great-niece, Nancy Whitaker Tate, remembers marking his gravesite with rocks as a child. With the assistance of Scott Cole, noted Civil War author, they have arranged for John to receive his veteran's tombstone in a ceremony on August 13, 2005 at 3 PM. The public is invited to attend, as well as any descendants of John Whitaker and his wife Nancy Nuckles. John served for 5 years with the 34th Virginia Calvary under Col. W. A. Witcher. In his 1923 application for his Civil War pension, he said, "I was in the battle of Gettysburg three days and nights, and if I never performed any other military service for the state of Virginia, this baptism of fire and shell should certainly be sufficient credit for my eligibility rolls, at least it seems so to me after 57 years have passed by. I am old and worn out and tired. Have perhaps lived beyond the allotted time already, and if the pension does not come pretty soon. I will not need it." John died September 20, 1928 and for almost 77 years his grave has had no marker to acknowledge his life and service as military veteran. Tazewell County Sons of Confederate Veterans, commanded by Bob McGraw, will perform the ceremony at the gravesite. For more information contact Nancy Whitaker Tate or Frances Whitaker McGlothin at 276-964-2029. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Additionally, you may want to try some other nearby WV counties like Mercer, and perhaps even some Eastern KY counties since Buchanan County borders Kentucky. Just a few more ideas that may or may not pan out for you. I am having a heck of a time locating the death record for a James B. Lewis who was born in 1881 in Russell Co., VA and is rumored to have died in Bluefield, VA or Bluefield W VA. Does anyone have access to death record lists for Tazewell County? I have already searched Ancestry.com and no luck. Does anyone know which cemetery would be the most likely place for someone to have been buried in if they lived in Bluefield? He was last known alive in 1914, but could have died as late as 1991 I suppose. Thanks for any assistance! Phyllis
Who was your John Burks father? Was it James Edward? Ron
I am researching John Edward Burk and the data I have found states he was born in 1756, Tazewell City, VA. If I have figured this out correctly, there was not a Tazewell Co. VA until 1800 and he was most likely born in Augusta Co. VA. If he never moved in his life I would need to check each of the following counties. Is this correct? Tazewell was formed in 1800 from Russell and Wythe Co.s Russell was formed in 1786 from Washington Co. Wythe was formed in 1790 from Montgomery Co. Washington and Montgomery Co.s were formed in 1777 from Fincastle which is an abolished county that was formed from Botetourt. Botetourt was formed in 1770 from Augusta Co. and it's county seat is Fincastle. No wonder genealogy is a giant jig-saw puzzle. Any help greatly appreciated. Diane Miller Georgetown, TX
