    3. Hello all, I just sent off an e-mail to SK Publications asking for a rate quote for the 1880 and 1900 census cds. If I understood correctly, we would need about 13 participants to purchase the 1880 census, and about 23 to get the 1900, and each of us would get a copy and one additional copy would be donated to the GenWeb archives for posting on the web. It looks like we have 8 or 9 volunteers right now, so it is looking good for at least getting the 1880. I will let everyone know when I hear back from them. Any comments or suggestions will be welcome. Linda

    3. If any of you are interested... A group of us ordered the 1920 Pike County census. The index (which I'm still working on) is posted on my web page. I am also currently awaiting Johnson County 1900 & 1920. We have had excellent service with John from S K Publications. The only downside is that it takes 2-3 months to get the microfilm from the National Archives. Once that is done, it takes S K Publications only a week or so to scan and mail. They mail each CD directly to each participant (a very nice feature). Let me know which year you plan on ordering... 3. There seem to be 2 times when large groups of SW VA, WVa, and Pike Co. KY ended up in Lewis County....First of all Lewis County is on the west side of the State and Spokane is on the east side (about 8 hours apart) Western Washington is wet, wet, wet, and green year around. Eastern Wash is dry, very hot and very cold in the winter(lots of snow)with much more barren land that for the most part today is irrigated farmland. The Northeast section (Spokane) is dry but also had good timber stands. The Cascade Mountain Range separates the two climates. The only large towns in Lewis Co. are Chehalis and Centralia, combined are less than 50,000. The other areas are all small logging towns.(populations of 200 - 1000) The 2 groups of settlers fell into this scenerio, (Please this is a generalization) the first came in the late 1800's and many families had left VA during the War between the States and ended up in Minnesota promised free land by the Ohio Land Company. Towards the end of the century they moved on to Washington. Washington on the west side was an incredible old growth timber land. During the early 1900's big companies were actually paying loggers to move to Western Washington. (Spokane also had alot of timber). Many of those enticed to leave Ky, Va, and WVa were promised jobs and better pay, which indeed the majority were able to do. Eastern Lewis County is very very hilly and mountainous, sits at the bottom of Mt St.Helens and Mt. Rainer and I think that the people from back there loved it because it probably reminded them of their own homes, game was plentiful, and there's still much hunting that goes on today. Common names of Eastern Lewis Co. are Goble, Coleman, England, Phillips, Mullins, Stiltner, Clevenger, McClanahan, and many many others. Hope this helps alittle bit. John Blair/listowner Lewis Co.
