Sheila, Your post is very interesting. My GGGrandfather's (James S. Asbury 1809-1880) first wife was Margaret Claypoole 1806-1836, daughter of Jeremiah and Mary, of Claypoole Hill. My GGGGrandfather (Henry Asbury 1760-1825) was married to Martha (Patty) Moore and his will was witnessed by Henry Cecil. Henry Asbury had a farm at the foot of Paint Lick Mountain which is near Claypoole Hill. James Asbury was born on that farm and was one of the children who inherited the farm. These children subsequently sold the farm to William Elswick. Does any of this sound familiar? Do you have any additional info on Jeremiah Claypoole such as other children? I have been trying to pinpoint the location of Henry Asbury's farm for the past three years. I spent two weeks in Tazewell County this year searching court house records and tromping around the foot of Paint Lick mountain trying to find where the farm was. Henry Asbury must of had a lot of respect for Henry Cecil. Where did Henry Cecil live? One of James Asbury's sons was named Henry Cecil Asbury . Henry Cecil Asbury 1837-1916 was my GGrandfather. He was married to Cynthia Angeline Bowling. My Grandmother was Barbara Belcher whose family was also related to the Beavers. It sounds like we have some common ancestors. I have my family back to the middle 1600s. I like to find physical evidence , graves, farms, etc. concerning my ancestors. I am in Tazewell County at least once every 2 years to attend the Asbury reunion in Tannersville. I have been researching in Tazewell County for 20 years and think I have been on every road and in most of the cemeteries. You might have info that I would be interested in. -- Ed Asbury, W3AEU - Bokeelia, FL - Caressed by the blue waters of Charlotte Harbor

Arthur, Not sure if this helps, but I have a Henry W. Cecil who married Rebecca Claypool(e) circa 1821. Rebecca's Parents were Jeremiah Claypool and Mary Brown. At least one of their children had Brown as a middle name: Mary Brown Cecil who married William P. Linkous. Since the Charles has the middle name of Brown - this might be a clue. Don't know if he is one of Henry & Rebecca's children - but could possibly be related to this family. You might check with the Tazewell Court House. I was able to get birth records for my great grandparents who were born in 1855 and marriage records as far back as 1806. They did keep very good records. Hope this helps! Dear Listers, I was checking out maps at http://www.topozone.com/default.asp in the Wrights Valley, Bluestone River area, on the Stoney Ridge of Tazewell County, trying to locate the area where my 3 great grandfather (Isaac Brown) had owned property ca 1800. I found a marking for a Brown Church. Does anyone know of such a church? Below is the location of the Church. Also interested to find out if it has a cemetery. Thank you, Ann http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?s=25&size=s&lat=37.1871&lon=-81.5394 http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=37.1911&lon=-81.5244&size=s&s=50
In Reference to and in part: <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Dear Kim, Monte Vista is in Mercer county, WV half way between Bluefield and Princeton, at the community of Green Valley. It has about 6500 graves, was founded in the mid 1920's, and has been thought of by many as the premier cemetery for Bluefield families.>>>>>>>>>>>>>> You can find Green Valley mentioned here on this WEB Site: http://www.topozone.com/default.asp Use this site to find any community, ridge, hollow, creek regardless of the size. Once there a click on the map or edge of the map will navigate you at about a mile or two any direction. You can also right click on the screen and get a menu that has the zoom selection. This will take you in real close. But you will notice that these maps are put together in squares and you will have to follow this zoom procedure on each square until you get all the squares to size. Type in Bluefield (do not put in the state). A menu will pop up and select Bluefield, WV and your map will pop up. Read and follow the directions. If you like this site you may want to receive their Newsletter once every two weeks. It explains in the latest issue how to get around a problem of printing the map. I like using the 1 to 25,000 size, which will take you in so that you can actually see the homes. I found the home where I was born in Boissevain and those I lived in since in Abbs Valley and Richlands. These maps download to your computer very fast but if you copy them to clip board as they suggest for putting them in your image reader or photo program for printing they can exceed 1 Mb or more of space. I use this site extensively for locating land grants and etc. A wonderful and interesting site that is free and is getting better all the time. Robert Crabtree (formerly of Tazewell County, VA)

Dear List, We now have three volunteers to collect tombstone data for Monte Vista cemetery. This encourages me that we probably can get at least ten volunteers, the minimum figure I believe would be necessary to do the job. More would be great. If you are available and able, please respond to me, or to the list. This would be done in good weather, of course. And could be done on your own time schedule. I forsee each volunteer being responsible for a specific section of the cemetery.... and persuing that goal independantly. These are the three who have volunteered so far: Ron Dawson <[email protected]> Barbara Duncan <[email protected]> Robert Perry III <[email protected]> Thanks so much, Robert Perry
Robert, Sure wish I were in that area; I would be a willing helper. Good luck in finding volunteers and throughout the project. Am I correct in assuming that the results will be make available on the Web? I'm sure I'm not alone in waiting with excited anticipation. Pam Kerschner Pawleys Island, SC
Dear List members: We now have two volunteers to work on collecting tombstone data for Monte Vista Cemetery,..... myself and Barbara Duncan (see below) Is anyone else interested and able? Monte Vista is located halfway between Bluefield and Princeton, and is a very significant cemetery for those with family in Bluefield after the mid 1920's. Today, there are about 6500 graves. I believe it would take a minimum of ten volunteers to make this a viable project. Volunteers would work as they had the time, with no pressing time schedule. I'll be glad to be the chairman or coordinator. I think each volunteer would take responsibility for a certain section of the cemetery. Essentially, it would involve walking from grave to grave in that section, writing down the data from each tombstone, and typing it after returning home. Please contact me, or respond to the list, if you are interested and able. Thanks, Robert L. Lula Hankins Hunter, Hawaii, has recently completed a new transcript of the Archibald Thompson Diary, which is posted at Doug Moore's web site http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/archibald/ Found by Barbara Thompson Saltou in the early 1980s when she and her father visited Monroe County, Ky., the diary documents the life and times of many families in Virginia and Kentucky in the 1700-1800s. Lula's ancestral homeland is Tazewell Co., Va., and she has spent many years researching her and allied families in the New River Valley, including Montgomery Co., Va. She has deciphered many new names, dates, and events, as well as military, trade and travel entries from a new photocopy of the diary. Archibald wrote "Farewell to Sweet Ireland Wherein I Was Bred." However, we've been unable to find when the family emigrated or where they disembarked in America. The files are in text format and can be easily downloaded. Thanks, Jemima Gee Morse
