    2. My father, William Dodd, was born in Tazewell in 1888. Several years ago I was able to successfully trace his ancestors back to a William Dodd who resided in Botetourt County during the Revolutionary War. At that time, from somewhere came the following inormation: "Service during Revolutionary War; -- Capt. Harris Co., Militia, 56th Dist. Reference:-- VA DAR Muster Roll Rev War , Botetourt Co, VA (GRC, 1948) p.7" Can some experienced genealgist out there tell me what this means, and maybe where I could find the original information? I have tried without success to find a listing of VA veterans of the Revolution. I am also unable to find a Botetourt Co. List or Digest to place an inqury. Any suggestions? Virginia in California

Thanks for the website and info. > Doug, Thank you very much for the correction for Abijah Whitt, Jr. and Sr. I had a message from Dr. Thompson, a descendant of Israel Lorton, and he confirms that Polly Lorton who m. Abijah Whitt is the d/o of Israel and Sarah Unknown Lorton. Polly Lorton and Rebecca Elswick, who m. Abijah Whitt, Sr., are granddaughters of Lydia Unknown Elswick Lorton. I'll follow-up with a message about Israel's line, compiled by Dr. Thompson. Because we're dealing with likely half the inhabitants of early Montgomery Co., and New River Valley area, I'll pull out some of the individual family lines that I do have some proof of and post them in following messages. There are two important documents that corroborate these early lines: Archibald Thompson Diary, transcript by Lula Hankins Hunter, at http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/archibald and an abstract of the Moses Skaggs Estate Suit #3871, Green Co., Ky., posted by the late Sally Heller at the Skaggs Rootsweb list archives, http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/S/SK AGGS+1998+242385348+F There's also a file at http://www.ancestry.com file #7863 (type in "John Elswick" at the World Tree to find it) that has a GEDCOM which can be downloaded. There are some excellent documentation and extensive notes that you may want to check out. I've been unable to get the person who posted this file to reply to any of the messages I've written, so I don't know who he/she is. Three researchers have good sites that include many of these early families are: Earl B Akers at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/3406/contents.html Lula Hankins Hunter at http://www.mccserv.com/genealogy/hankinsl/hankinsl.htm And, of course, as I wrote you yesterday, Cal Ingram, who has given many primary source references that tie many of our families. http://www.inficad.com/~cingram/warren/fowndx.htm#Thompson I will really appreciate any information you have for Nancy Compton, as well as further information on just anybody. I hope you can give me clues to help me in my quest to find my grandparents, John and Mary Unknown Thompson, and the maiden surname of my grandmother, Lydia Unknown Elswick Lorton. Thanks, Jemima

References for this information are the Archibald Thompson Diary, transcript by Lula Hankins Hunter, posted at http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/archibald which has Betty, b. 1771, as d/o John Elswick, and Cal Ingram's gendex posted at http://www.inficad.com/~cingram/warren/fowndx.htm#Thompson Because this family connects to so many of my Thompson-Skagg-Lorton lines, I am interested in your references, not only to Abijah, but also to Polly Lorton and Nancy Compton. Does your Abijah tie to the Richard Whitt who was a witness in the 1836 Moses Skaggs Estate Suit in Green Co., Ky.? Here's an excerpt, from a transcript posted at the Skagg list in 1997. "From Green County, KY, File #387l Deposition of William Ratliff: I was acquainted with Moses Skaggs of Green County Kentucky. He had four sisters to wit: Susannah who married one Richard Whit, Betsy or Elizabeth, who md. John Hankins. Lydia who married Mathias Harman and Nancy who md. William Meridy. . . ." 1. [VATAZEWE] Mathews
    2. Hi, I am new to the list. I am researching John Edward Mathews and his son John Warren <Jack> Mathews. I recently found my Great-Great Grandmother's diary and she mentions that John Edward lived in Bluefield, VA around the late 1920's. I'd like to find out if he is buried there. My mom remembers that he owned a tombstone business....he carved tombstones. I have seen a picture of it and believe it was called Wright and Mathews or Mathews and Wright, I'm not totally sure. Is anyone familiar with this??? It has never been clear that he lived in Bluefield, VA or Bluefield WVA. Can anyone help me? Also, my Gram mentions in her diary that 'Jack and Sharon' came to visit........we don't know who Sharon is! We are wondering if my grandfather was married once before he married my grandmother but never told her or my mom. The marriage would have taken place prior to 1926 or 1927. Has anyone ever seen anything pertaining to a John/Jack and Sharon Mathews??? This is a true mystery! If anyone can help, I would be VERY glad!!! Thank you, Jennifer Harness Chattanooga, TN

    3. Joseph Vandike does not appear on the 1830 census. However, Joseph and Abigale may be living with part of the Vandike family as there is a male and female of their age living with John Vandike Jr. and I have no other explanation for this male and female. Joseph does appear on the Tazewell property lists starting in 1832 and remains on the list for the next years. On February 24, 1845 Joseph sold his land to Israel Vandike. I wonder if he did not sell his land and move away from Tazewell with some of my line of the Vandike family and then may have died and Abigale came back to Tazewell and lived. My reason for thinking this is the deed to Israel. Instead of being witnessed by Joseph and Abigale, as was normal on the old deeds, this deed of sale was proven by the oath of David Christian, Alexander Prewett, and Anthony Christian. I assume that Joseph and Abigale were not present to wistness the sale. I believe that William Matney, who married Nancy Vandike and moved to Missouri and then on to Kansas is the brother of Abigale. 2. Dan, I don't remember if I have thrown this out before; if so let's go for a second time. I have Abigale Mattenlee who married Joseph Vandike 21 July 1829. Joseph is not listed in the 1830 Census. Abigale is listed in the 1840 Tazewell Co. Census. She is subsequently found in Tazewell and Buchanan Counties, VA. She is enumerated in the census near Walter Matney, Sr in the 1850 Tazewell Census; I suspect he is her father. This Walter Mattingly/Matney is 78 in 1850 Tazewell Census (b @ 1770s). Have you been able to make a connection between the Tazewell Matney/Mattingly families to the Mattingly families of Maryland? Have you established migration patterns for older members of the family which might have passed through Tazewell County; or definitely did not pass through this area. I have been hitting this wall from the Abigale/Walter side for a long time. Any thoughts on who might be on the other side? I wish I had something important to contribute but questions seem to be the only thing I have. Lomane

    3. Thanks, Bob, I have been wondering if you and I might be distantly related? Do you have any Steeles in your background? One of my gr gr aunts married was married to James Harvey Pruitt. What I have on the family is on my Families of Steele website under Shade and Christina (Deskins) Steele. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ridge/6203/lastwill.htm I didn't research the Pruitt family- just what I found in the cemetery and on census records for Eleanor Steele's family.
