My mother was born in Pounding Mill. I have been there many times. It is between Tazewell and Claypool Hill! Diana
Not true. It is more like 30 miles and is between Tazewell and Claypool Hill. Can someone give me the name and email address of someone who is connected with the Tazewell County Historical Society. I have the officers names but I can't find any email addresses for any of them. I joined the Society in June of 1999 but have not heard anything from them. They are only open for a short time on Wednesdays and I never remember to call at the correct time. I know there is a newsletter but I have never received one. HELP!! -- Ed Asbury, W3AEU - Bokeelia, FL - Caressed by the blue waters of Charlotte Harbor
Tina, Are you looking for James Nelson b. ~1875, son of Israel Nelson? I have Israel Nelson, widower aged 37 yrs, 4 mon 1 day m. Susan Paton, widow age 36 yr 0 mo 6 days. Performed by PJ Lockhart 6 Jun 1865. Place of birth given for both as Tazewell. Israel, a farmer, is the son of Isaac and S. Nelson. Susan is the daughter of Jacob and L. Henkil. Now the exciting part for me is that Susan Henkil Paton (also known as Susannah Henkle/ Hinkle Payton/Peyton/Paton) is my ancestress by her first marriage to John Payton. She had 5-7 children with John Payton, and at least 4 with Israel Nelson (based on 1870 census data): Susan Nelson b. 1869 m. Richard Lippford Virginia Nelson b. 1871 m. Mr. Hagerman Julia Nelson b. 1872 m. Mr. Dula James Nelson b. 1875 I would love to exchange more information with you. I am descendant of Susannah's daughter Elizabeth Letitia Payton. I was named for her, and I've never come across anyone else who is a descendent of Susannah's. Please email me at [email protected] -Payton James-Amberg

I posted an earlier email today on using Topo Zone to view maps of the creeks, towns and hollers in which you may be interested. They have an on line newsletter that is informative reading if you wish to look into this site. The newsletters pretty well explain this site's objective and how you can best use it. You can easily navigate to the past issues to get it all. Here is the address for the newsletter: http://www.topozone.com/TopoTimes/vol01num03.asp I consider this an important tool in genealogy research and use it all the time and it's free. Robert Crabtree
It is located on RT 460 as you leave Bluefield Virginia. It is within a mile or two of the city limits. It may even be in the city limits.
If you go to topozone.com , type in Pounding Mill only no state a menu will drop down with all the Pounding Mill locations listed. Click on the one for Virginia and you will immediately see a topo map with the exact geographical locations listed. That is a good way of looking at any location in the United States you may be interested in. I just patched this address to my Internet Explorer and it took me directly to Topo Zone. I typed Pounding Mill in the blank. The drop down had only one location for that name. On the same line it gave this info: Elev. 2200 ft, Lat 37.075 deg N and Lon 81.709 deg W. It took less than 16 seconds. I clicked on the highlighted Pounding Mill and it opened up a beautiful map of that area in less than 30 seconds. This is a wonderful program that is free and you can find even the smallest of locations. Try it. It's fun and informative. Hope this helps. Robert Crabtree.
I sent it Paul. Maybe Authur Davidson or someone else can help me. On page 24 of the 1850 census of Johnson County Tennessee in the town of Taylorville is listed "Snider, Jacob 45 and Keren H. 30". Jacob (my ggggrandfather) was born in Burkes Garden, Tazewell County. Keren (Karen?) was his second wife. I believe her maiden name was Davidson.
