Just a little bit of information you may use as a hint. My family all lived in Boissevain and Pocahontas, Tazewell County, VA. All within 10 miles of Bluefield. They all got their marriage license in Princeton, Mercer County, WV because it was closer than Tazewell. Transportation was not all that great in those days past and the men folks all had to work. Most did not have automobiles until after WWII. Even today, those that die their death certificate may be issued in Princeton because the closest hospital is in Bluefield. My fathers address on the Social Security Death Index is Bluefield, WV. He died at the VA Hospital in Salem, VA and lived in Boissevain, VA. Why its that way? I don't know. For those that don't know the area, Princeton is the Mercer County Seat and Bluefield is nearby. The clerks at the Mercer County Court House are some of the nicest you will run into and the best I can remember, they have the lowest cost for copies I have seen. Something like $1.50 each. When I research the SW VA area I touch all bases because of county and state boundary changes and the transportation issue. My bet would be that many records for Bluefield, VA would be at the Mercer County Courthouse in Princeton. Robert Crabtree
The state archives have marriage indexes. Perhaps someone else can be more specific. I was asked how to recognize the houses. Here is a little more information on navigating the Topo Map. The homes are the little black squares. You can also zoom in even closer by using the zoom tab. Go to a known area and you will be able to more understand what you are looking at. Some times a mine will appear as a crossed pick and shovel emblem. Also, over the right screen you will see small, medium and large. Click on large and this will give you a full screen image. You will then have to use your vertical and horizontal scroll bars to navigate the entire screen. Click on the little arrows at the edges and corners and you can navigate in that direction to the adjoining area. Click anywhere on the screen and where your cursor is pointing and that location will go center screen. You can actually drive all the way by Highway 50 from California to New Jersey in this manner but you will need several lunches on the way. Robert
Robert, Thanks so much for the tidbit of information. How very interesting to learn this. You might want to be more specific. If the marriage occured on the Virginia side of Bluefield (Tazewell Co), the records would be in Tazewell. If it was West virginia (Mercer Co), then the records are at Princeton. Great! Thanks for the info! I know very very little about that area! Thanks! Jenn
Hello, I live at Pounding Mill, Va just off Route 460. At one time there was a school house by the post office at Pounding Mill. The school house is still there, but they use it to park school buses now. I continue to see people looking for locations. If you can navigate the WEB try the following as I mention below. Its free. I went to this Web Site: http://www.topozone.com/ Typed in the query box the following one at a time: Crabtree Crabtree Creek Crabtree Cemetery and others. I got locations for each of these. I clicked on these locations and got a topographical map of the area. I could then adjust the area covered i.e.. 1/25,000. This gave me a map that zooms in to the equivalent of 1 mile to 4 inches on the screen. It shows all homes, some cemeteries etc in the area requested. I use this map to look up locations I find in family histories, land grants and etc. I am always seeing people wanting lookups and information on locations. Here is what you want in just a matter of seconds and it's free. And the information is accurate and without a lot of helpful folks on these lists responding where they may think it is. My Crabtree family was located on Holston River in SW Virginia. I clicked on North Fork Holston and navigated the map to where I was born in Boissevain, VA. By following the river and through the gaps, I noticed locations along the way that I was familiar with on old home places. I even passed through Crabtree Gap. I also followed the Holston South West and became familiar with the route the rafters took while shipping their pelts, lead, powder, iron ore and etc. down to New Orleans. You folks that migrated from TN and KY can see the close proximity of these locals with that of SWVA, KY and the Cumberland Pass. Elevations and contours are well defined and you can get a real good mental impression of why they traveled the way they did and better understand the hardships they must have endured. I will not say that all locations can be found on this map but I found some that has never been on any other map I have viewed. Topo maps are designed to show geographical and population information. They have as I mentioned contours, elevations and they also show mining, creeks, hollows, communities, cemeteries and etc. If you are interested in a travel map to view highways, go to http://www.mapquest.com. I clicked on both of these links and they will work. Robert Crabtree
Thanks for your help!
Hello all, Seeking info on Henry W Hager, born cir 1837 to Jeremiah and Rhoda Hager in Tazewell Co. Henry married on 12 June 1860 in Tazewell Co - M C (Caroline) Moore, born cir 1838 to Martin and Mary Moore in Smyth Co. Probable children of Henry and Caroline are John b 1861, Joseph b 1861, Mary Serlida b 1863, and Charles b 1866. Henry was desceased by 1870 (maybe Civil War?) because Caroline is found on the 1870 Smyth Co census living with Stephen Lambert, who she married in 1871. Henry served in the War in 29th Va Inf, enlisting in Tazewell Co in 1862. Any and all help will be appreciated. My direct line links to Mary Serilda born 1863. Thanks. ~Linda

Hi Scott:::::::::::Your software must be superb. Will you give it one more test, for me? I have been trying to find the historic location of MANNERING, WV. This is supposed to be located 2-1/2 miles NW of Godfrey, WV. The road runs basically NW to McComas. Mannering may have been the name of the Post Office, which encompassed a large geographical land mass. Some people say that McComas was Mannering. However, McComas was a thriving community around the turn of the century, and, probably had a P.O. The birth and death records, of many of my family members have Mannering as the address. There were only a few doctors in that whole area of the state at that time. Usually only one, at a time, in this particular locale. These few doctors listed Mannering, for my family members, between the years of 1907-1919. Even the relatives whose names appear on these records, do not remember the name, let alone, the location. I was born and raised within four miles, of this vaporized Mannering. And, we may find that Mannering was the P.O. name at McComas. Will you give it a try? Thank you. May I please weigh in on this issue, too. I have the 1995 second edition of the Delorme "Virginia Atlas & Gazetteer." Also, I know the area. It is 2 1/2 miles between Pounding Mill and Claypool Hill. Claypool Hill is about 13 miles from the town of Tazewell. And Tazewell is 18 miles from Bluefield. Incidentally, the above mentioned Atlas is an invaluable resource... especially in the car. It shows every little road, and also shows topographical markings. Wonderful for exploring those very, very remote valleys and coves. Robert Perry Bluefield Ron and/or Kathy Dawson wrote: > Not true. Robert, Thanks for the map site. I finally know where Heninger Gap is/was located. It's called Hutchinson Rock now, but the site gave me that information. Fern
This is just a "for-what's-it-worth," since I don't think I have any ancestral connection to the place (that I have yet discovered), but Santa did bring me some pretty nifty topographical mapping software for Christmas. By inserting the correct CD and typing "Pounding Mill, VA," I can zoom in to as close as 1"=250'. Not only that, but it gives latitute, longitude and elevation. Pounding Mill appears to be located astride U.S. 19/460 about 3 miles ENE of Claypool Hill. It's located at 37 deg, 4.69N latitude, 81 deg, 42.47W longitude. The elevation is about 2,200 feet. Another database I have that came with my genealogy program gives the location of the historic Pounding Mill School as 37 deg, 4' 39"N latitude, 81 deg, 42' 39"W longitude. No other "Pounding Mill" was returned in a search of that database. Hope this helps. Scott Chafin Houston, Texas Ron and/or Kathy Dawson wrote: > Not true. Would anyone in the Bluefield area be willing to check and see if they could find evidence of a marriage between John Warren Mathews and a Sharon? The marriage would have occured around 1925-28. I would sincerely appreciate it! Jennifer Harness Chattanooga, TN
