I understand the annual Elswick reunion is held on one of the ancestral homelands, and I hope to get there someday. My gggg-grandmother, Mary Elswick, was born 1741, two hundred years to the year before I, in 1941. Could you ask around and see if you can learn anything about the fiddle tune "Elsick's Farewell"? Seasoned Elswick researchers have traced the family to its seat in England, and I know they would like to know about the music. 3. Scott, I didn't know if I would ever hear from Henry again, and was so thrilled to get a note from him last night. I'm pretty intrepid anymore when it comes to looking for my Elswicks. I've spent three years trying to get that line together and can't. So I've decided to get everything out there while we still have the use of RootWeb and GenWeb, and then maybe we can all find each other. Needless to say, I'm delighted that you and Henry connected. A bit of history: I didn't know I was an Elswick, despite the fact that my ggg-grandfather, and my mother's uncle, among others, have Elswick as a Christian name. About three or so years ago, my mother's cousin from Athens, WV, wrote my mother about an Elswick reunion which was being held in her area. So she sends me some news clippings and I go to the Shenandoah Co. library to check up on Hampshire Co., WV. A woman from the historical society works there and when I asked her where I could find info, she looked over my paper and saw that I was looking for Elswick, and it turned out she is a sister-in-law (sort of) of Gary Elswick who lives here in the Shenandoah. Very strange how that happened. So Gary and his cousin, Rev. Al Elswick, shared their research with me, but there's still too much to learn. Both these long-time researchers are now inactive -- Gary because of his health, and Rev. Al retired and moved to Upstate New York. I am so glad to hear from you, and will send you anything I have about the Elswicks that I have learned. I'm also glad that you and Lula Hankins Hunter are in touch. I had planned to go to Tazewell last summer, but couldn't make it. I hope to do so this year. I also connect to the Wittens, Greenups, McIntosh and Moores who have roots there. 3. I don't know about your Elswicks, but there is a Big Rock in Buchanan County, VA, near the WV border. It's near Big Stone Gap. My late husband was from Big Rock. The nearest big city is Bluefield, WV. It's coal mining country. Karen Belcher

My John was born > 1729, but was deceased 1749. He had married a Lydia ?? > I have another John who married Susannah ?? Most of the early John's and Johnathan's are in Archibald's Diary. The John Elswick who died bef 1749 was the father of four children by his marriage to Lydia Unknown: Mary, b. 1741, m. Archibald Thompson Lidia, b. 1743 "Rev. War" John Elswick, b 1745, m. Susana Unknown Johnathan, b. 1747, m. Millie Unknown Finch (By the way, Johnathan was also in the Rev. War, but Elswick researchers who gave me the data stuck on the "Rev. War" for this John III to help keep them all straight. It looks as if even the father of the John who died and left a will in old Hampshire Co., WV in 1756, may have also been named John.) > > I have NEVER found anything to connect these folks until your > post about the will, and the URL you posted about the > transcription of the Journal. > > What I have been able to document is that my Joseph Elswick > had brothers Bradley, John, William, Johnathan and sisters > Mary and Betty (possibly Elizabeth). It is believed, based on > the will of a John Elswick (this will I haven't seen either) that > Joseph's parents were a John Elswick and Susannah ??. I have no information that "Rev. War" John Elswick left a will; I hope he did. According to the diary, John and Susana Unknown had the following children (pages 19, 99): Mary Elswick, b. 1769 Betty Elswick, b. 1771 Johnathan, b. 1773 A Joseph Elswick is list on page 19 in the register of children born, following the record of the three above births: "Joseph Elswick Son of Mary was Born the 4th day of May 1788 Sunday noon." As Archibald set down this record of Joseph's birth in 1788, it seems odd that he didn't list more children for Rev. War John and Susana in the diary. Other Elswick researchers have traced their lines to children of Rev. War John and Susana, but I can't get them all straightened out. > If this is true, then this lineage becomes John I m. 3. Jemima, I don't know if the original of the message below was posted to the Tazewell list or not; I think I would have recognized it. It appears to originally have been posted to Green Co, KY. In any event, because of your reply, I've found a "new" third cousin! Perintha Elswick's parents were John William Elswick (1827-1864) and Nancy Jelima Oney (1826-1913). John William Elswick died during the Civil War about the same time as Louisa (Christian) Gates (1827-1864), wife of John Hile Gates (1825-1874). In 1865, in Lawrence Co, KY, John Hile Gates and Nancy Jelima Oney Elswick married. I'm a descendant of that marriage; Henry's a descendant of the first. Henry apparently knew nothing about Nancy because he didn't know her maiden name. Being a "double-Oney" myself, I'm able to give him more info than he probably wants. And I get to find out at least a little about Nancy's first marriage. When I wrote Henry with all the details, his response was "WOW!" However it came about, thanks very much for your posting. 3. Ginny::::::::::Arthur Davidson, here. I do not conect, at least that I know of, into your lineage. My HILL people came out of NC, ?I think??, into the "hills" of WV, in the 1850-1870 era. My branch remained there, and, are buried there, in Mercer County, Rock District, in the area of Montcalm, out of Bluefield and Princeton, about five to eight miles, located on the Bluestone River, about five miles, in a straight line, to its origin. I was born (1931) and raised in this area. Now, let's leave geography, and, go to genealogy. I have, also, lost my paddle, hit a brick wall, got stuck on a stump, something has stopped my trek into history. My elusive, shadow-like relatives exist pretty close to home. Just back at my g-gparents!! HEY, I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM AT LEAST A BAKERS' DOZEN OF YOU FOLKS. Back on track, my paternal DAVIDSON and HILL, and, g-gm HILL, do not seem to have come from any where, except, walk right out of the morning foggy mist. They, as of now, do not, in my file, have parents, siblings, or large feet. A little info.:::::::: James DAVIDSON, b abt 1833, VA +Margaret W.(Ann) FRENCH, b 1836, VA David HILL, b abt 1825, NC? +Louissa ?(Hill, Mahen, ???), NC Take care, everybody.
