    2. I am just starting to research my family. My grandfather: Ellis John Bailey, born 3/23/1902, died 7/1975. My grandmother: Ruby Bailey (I think her maiden name was Workman), born 10/04/1907, died 7/23/1998. 24613 Falls Mills, Va., Tazewell County. They are the parents of John, James, David, Mary (Howard), Colleen (?). Is there any information on their families? I would appreciate the help. Thanks, Linda. 1. [VATAZEWE] Greenhills Memory Gardens, Cedar Bluff
    2. Hi List, I have a problem! My grandparents are buried in Greenhills Memory Gardens, and I know where their graves are. My mother and several other relatives say that my great grandmother is buried in an older cemetery adjacent to Greenhills. They say my uncle and aunt were also buried in this older cemetery in 1944, but the stones are missing. I have my uncle and aunt's death certificates, and they both say "Burial, Cedar Bluff, Va. Funeral Director, Farmer Funeral Home." My mother went to the cemetery last year, but could only find a vacant area with an old house where the old cemetery once was. Does anyone have any information regarding this older cemetery? My great grandmother died in 1906/1908. Her name was Maggie/Margaret Ellen Crusenberry Williams, wife of Rufus Aaron Williams. Is there a place in Tazewell that would have records of who owns the land the old cemetery is on? Someone must be paying taxes on it. There must be a zoning record or something to lead me to the owner and perhaps some answers. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Maggie is my 25 year old brick wall! Diana

    1. [VATAZEWE] Elizabeth "Betty" Toliver
    2. I believe my great-grandmother, Elizabeth "Bette" (Burchett) Toliver, may have died in Tazewell county and be buried near Pocahantes. Believe she died bet 1890-1893. My great-grandfather, Clark Nuckols Toliver, died 1900-1907 in Powhatan, McDowell Co, WV and family story says he was buried in a cemetery half way down Peel Chestnut Mountain. My father remembers going there with the family when he was really young. I can't think of any reason why they would haul his remains across the mountain from Powhatan unless it was to bury him beside Elizabeth. On a recent trip from California we were going to see if we could find the cemetery but was told the cemeteries on the mountain are too grown over to see anything. Can someone help me with this problem? Kathy Tolliver

    2. Don and Sheila
    3. Sandra, I remember the explosion. My Dad had quit the mines (at my mother's insistence - she told him she would live in a one room shack and live off bread and water - anything if he would get out of the mines). Thank God he listened! So we were in Memphis - Dad had returned to the Navy during the Korean War and stayed. However, we had so many family members that worked there - it was still a scary time for us. I am also researching the Brown and Whitt lines. Could we be cousins? I have two Mary Browns - one the daughter of John Brown of Wilkes County NC. She married Jonas Sparks The other Mary Brown - daughter of James Brown and Esther Goff (?) married Jeremiah Claypoole. I also have Frank Brown married Martha Sparks, d/o Robert Sparks and Susan (?) in Wilkes County NC. All these Browns or their children ended up in Tazewell. My Whitt connection goes back to Richard Whitt who married Susannah Skaggs. If you see a connection, please contact me and we can share info. Sheila [email protected] Sheila's SURNAMES: Barrett, Beavers, Boling (Bowling), Brown, Claypool, Conley, Crickmer, Godbey, Hankins, Linkous, Skaggs, Sparks, Whitt Don's SURNAMES: Allen, Dawson, Goodwin, Hein

    2. Thank you for this posting. I was 5 years old at the time and by the grace of God, my father survived this disaster. I do remember my mother washing the jacket he wore to work because he had used it to pillow someone's head. His name was Harry Brown and he passed away Jan, 1972. Though he survived the many accidents in the mine, he did contract Black Lung disease. I am researching BROWN, WHITT, ARWOOD, KEEN, HOOPS. Sandra Brown Neahusan

    3. For those of you looking for information on this mine disaster, don't forget to look into the West Virginia records just acrossed the state line from Tazewell. According to THEY DIED IN THE DARKNESS by Lacy Dillon, the West Virginia Department of Mines headed the investigation because the mine came under their jurisdication. The coal processing plant, the company store and the mine offices were on the WV side. Most of the miners lived on the Virginia side and entered the mine by that side. The town straddled the state line. Cathy

    3. My, My, My! It sure is a small world!! Thank you so much for your response. I have a fairly complete line back on the Deskins; the catch is I don't have all of their children's names. I will gladly send you what I have if you will tell me where I can beg, borrow, or steal the Fransico book! My grandfather was James Jefferson Shortt, son of Amos T. Shortt, married to Lydia Margaret Deskins, daughter of Samuel Muncy Deskins, son of Richard Daniel Deskins and Margaret 'Peggy' Francisco. My Dad was John Vince Shortt. Seriously, I will send you the Deskins that I have. What's the mailing address? I truly would like to see the Francisco book; where can I get it? This family history stuff has turned out to be a great deal of time and oddly, very satisfying. Keep in touch, new found cousin. You are the fourth new one that I have found. 3. Dear Frieda: I am researching my roots too - aren't we all?- and I have come across the surname of Francisco. A cousin of mine living in Buchanan County has told me that a large group of Italians came to Tazewell County to work at the Pocahontas Mine. I would like to confirm that info and if possible obtain a roster of those Italian miners. My Gr-Gr-Gr-Grandmother's name was Margaret 'Peggy' Francisco and she married Richard Daniel Deskins about 1800. I am trying to trace Peggy back a little further. Can you or someone else help me with the Italian connection? Any help will be greatly appreciated and I will be willing to share info that I have on the Shorts.
