If anyone has access to the 1900 Tazewell Co. census, I would really appreciate a lookup. I am trying to find my husband's great uncle, Moses Alfred Lawson, born 16 May 1894. He would have been about 6 at the time of the census. His parents are Burk Lawson and Rose Puckett, but they might not have been living together by the time of this census. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Melissa Lawson ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Hello all, Seeking info on the family of E. B. Harris who is listed on the 1900 Tazewell Co census in HH# 12, pg 210B. I would like to confirm that this is the same person as Blair Harris born 1854 to James and Charlotte Bowman Harris. Listed on the 1900 census with E. B. Harris is wife Alice age 24 (but could be off a few years, judging by childrens ages), born June 1875, married 3 years. Children are Ely/Eli Harris, son, age 1, and the following Sargent step-children: John age 14, Cora 10, Etta 6, McKinley 5, and Amy 3. I assume that Alice was a widow and that her Sargent/Sergent husband died about 1897. A William Sargent, age 34, lived in HH# 10 and a Robert Sargent, age 28, lived in HH# 11, and probably are related to the deseased husband. Or, it is possible that the children were his step-children from a previous marriage. Can anyone help? Thanks. ~Linda
I met a wonderful woman names Beavers in 1980 in Liberty, Tazewell County. My husband and I were driving through Liberty trying to find the grave of my great grandfather, Newton Richardson. A woman was walking beside the old dirt road that ran through the town, and we stopped to ask directions. Not only did she know where he was buried, but she had known him for years. She told me wonderful stories about him, and I am forever grateful to her for her kindness. I never got her first name, but she was an older woman, and her address was Box 12 in Liberty. She had a friend named Crews who lived in the same town in Florida that my mother lives in. Anyone know this Mrs. Beavers? I'd love to know her first name so I can keep it in my records. Diana Mason
I also have Witten, Skaggs and Cecil in my lines. Thomas Witten, Henry Skaggs, and John Cecil

David, Those names are certainly familiar to me. I am descended from Jeremiah Claypool and his first wife, Mary Brown. Their daughter, Rebecca married Henry Cecil. Their daughter, Mary Brown Cecil married William P. Linkous. My Beavers line goes back to Robert "Robin" Beavers who married Catherine Harmon. Their son, Alexander married Elizabeth Hankins. Their son, William married Rebecca Harrison. Their daughter, Rachel, married Charles Godbey. I am also related to Rachel through Robin and Catherine's son William who married Nancy Harrison. Their daughter, Catherine Beavers, married John Thomas Barrett. And so it goes. Eventually, my Crickmer Mom married my Conley Dad and here I am! My entire family was born in Tazewell or surrounding counties. Doubt there are very many there that I am not related to! I was born in Squire in McDowell Co. WV. I now live in CA and have recently started trying to put the family tree together. I find that I am related to three Skaggs sisters --one married Richard Whitt, another married Mathias Harman and the third married John Hankins, SR. Think that takes me pretty far back --perhaps to the beginnings of Tazewell Co. My Conley line goes back to James Conley who married Rachel Stobough in 1806 in Tazewell Co. They lived in Burkes Garden. So, David, guess that makes us cousins! Always great to find another family member! :-) Sheila Sheila's SURNAMES: Barrett, Beavers, Boling (Bowling), Brown, Claypool, Conley, Crickmer, Godbey, Hankins, Linkous, Skaggs, Sparks, Whitt Don's SURNAMES: Allen, Dawson, Goodwin, Hein
I am looking for info on a family named "Crawford" that moved to the Jewel Ridge vicinity in the 1860's. This family would have consisted of a mother and several children, including a teenager named John Preston Crawford, who would later marry a Mary Jane Fox. Thanks, Jim Meadows [email protected]
Howdy, You list quite a number of old families of Tazewell co. Va. My maternal grandmother was Nancy Jane Beavers, daughter of Thomas Jackson and Susan (Lambert) Beavers. Nannie married George Harvey Brewster. On my paternal side, a Charity Miller VanDike was the second wife of Jeremiah B. Claypool. In the VanDike family was my paternal/maternal great grandmother, Elizabeth (Betsy) (Vandike) Mitchell. My paternal great-great-aunt, Christina Burk married Elihu Joseph Hankins. Any of these names familiar to you? David. M. Burke [email protected]
The Boissevain Mine explosion, early Saturday morning, February 27, 1932. The following were lost in the explosion. Names spelled as shown here: White miners: Sid Thomas Warren Harless Clayton Hodge J. L. Phipps Dave Wire Walker Thomas Robert Hardy Orbie Hardy O. R. Jones L. O. Brown Mason Shupe Burton Brooks Tom Yeates Charles Yeates Garnet McCormick James Hardy John Heck Sam Abrams C. R. Brown Sam White Claude Baldwin Garnet (Mike) Shupe Mont Miller John Baker Homer Baldwin Black miners: Dallas Fitzgerald Edd Pegram Sam Robinson Lewis Moten Lee Baker Will Johnson William Saunders Ben Saunders Edd Saunders Brady Adams W. S. White Howard Petty Mexican miner: Victor Auguieleo You have by this time noticed that many of those killed are of the same family. I do not have any family stories but it would be interesting to see them posted here if any of you folks know any. I think it is important to know what our families went through. It is hard to imagine the emotions of a community of probably 300 suffering a loss such as this at one time. I know my mom was emotional when speaking of this intil her death. She and dad lived three houses from the Company Store which was just across the creek from the Boissevain Mine Tipple. Robert Crabtree
In reference of the Cecil Witten Lawson name. I have very little on his ancestors. His daughter told me that Witten was from the famous Doctor Witten of Tazewell County. No family connection to that name is known. It seemed that Witten was a well used given name for a period of time. For that same reason, several kids I grew up with was given the name of Porter, named after Doctor Herbert H. Porter, a long time doctor for the Pocahontas Fuel Company in Boissevain and later in private practice in Pocahontas. He assisted in the birth and treated the sickness and hurts of most of us kids in the 30s, 40s and 50s. Not only did he slap my butt for the first time but saved it on two other occasions while growing up. Doctor Porter had taken care of many coal miners' injuries and sickness as well as having seen their last breath. When there was an accident in the Boissevain Coal Mine a steam whistle would be blown repeatedly to alert the doctor of the accident. The school on the hill would let some kids go down to the fence adjoining the doctors office to wait the news as to whose father or fathers had been hurt or killed. This was always an emotional time of waiting for all of us. Unlike schools of today, coal mining communities like Boissevain were small and we knew every kid in the entire school, families as well as most of their secrets. When one suffered, we all suffered. That's the way it was. Robert Crabtree

Heard from Margaret that it is possible to contribute to have the Tazewell Co. census scanned and posted . I would think there are a lot of us out there who would be interested: Hi, Taze. (with contributions from individuals) ordered the 1880 and it will take 2 months for it to be scanned and entered into Taz Archives. Not sure if enough people would be willing to cough up another $20 for 1900, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask. Each CD varies in cost $100 and up. Need to see if S K Publications has any pledges and what the cost of 1900 now is.
I'm just checking to see if my e-mail from the list is getting through. I haven't seen any lately. Diana
