I might have lead you astray in saying it is in YOUR dictionary. I just looked in a small one I have and it is not there, but It is in my Btitanica World Dictionary. I will scan it into my system and send it to you later today. Lowell Mullins
I think you are balking about bundling boards. In old New England, courting couples would go to bed in the winter time. A board was placed between them for propriety's sake. Look it up in your dictionary. It is definitely there. Lowell Mullins
Listers, Can anyone tell me about the use/history of "bundling bags"? Thanks, Ann

RE: LAWRENCE BOOK REF FOR ANDREW THOMSPON AS S/0 ELSWICK AND PATTY AKERS Cary Lynne Hall checked her database sources for Andrew Thompson and Harrietta Simpkins and writes the primary reference for the Simpkins (Cary is a Simpkins-Thompson descendant) line is Ora Belle McColman's "Descendants of Elder John Lawrence." However, McColman's book is not the source for the parents of Andrew Thompson: The source that shows Andrew as s/o Elswick Thompson and Patty Akers is from an unpublished Akers-Blackburn paper made available to Clan Thompson researchers last year. To be resolved is the identity of the Andrew Thompsons/Harriett Simpkins in Montgomery Co., Va., records. It looks like one Andrew was dead by 1858, but yet an Andrew signed the death records for his teen-age daughters who died in 1864-1865. 1858 Chancery Court Case #225 March 1858. Suit brought by Charelton family against Andrew Thompson heirs. Heirs noted to be Samuel A. Stone, Ellen Thompson, John Francis and Sarah his wife, formerly Sarah Thompson, John ?Ssurface and Nancy his wife, late Nancy Thompson, Charles Thompson, Mary Thompson, John Thompson, Harriett E. Thompson the last four infants under 21 years of age and Hariett Thompson. Two names I cannot read. Andrew Thompson qualified as administrator of the estate of Joseph Thompson who died c. 1855 in Kentucky. Lists heirs of Joseph Thompson. Case filed March 1870. Case filed against Stephen Childress as Adm of Andrews estate. I think Stephen Childress was also involved with William Thompson's estate. Andrew may have been brother to Joseph.

Does anyone have any information about a Mrs. Myrtle Mong that lived in Tazewell County, possibly West Graham in 1934. I believe she was the daughter of Lucy and Alex Carter Patti [email protected] The shortest distance between a problem and a solution is the distance between your knees and the floor.
More records Dr. Thompson found on Andrew and Harriet Thompson at the Montgomery Co., Va., courthouse last winter. I'm still trying to reconcile the suit brought against Andrew's heirs in 1858 with the fact that one Andrew was alive in 1863-1864 to report these deaths. >From the Bureau of Vital Statistics, Montgomery Co. Death Register: Mary Thompson d. Oct 1863 Typhoid fever, age 19 B. MontCo, parents Andrew and Harriett Thompson Emaline Thompson d. Oct 1864, Typhoid fever, age 17, B. Follows are records Tom Thompson found at the Montgomery Co., Va., courthouse. I can't reconcile the death of Nancy Thompson in 1863, d/o Andrew and Hariett Thompson, with the Andrew Thompson whose heirs were sued in 1858. In the suit there is a Nancy wife of John Surface, "late" Nancy Thompson. So the Nancy who died in 1863 wasn't even dead then. I would also very much like to get in touch with someone who may have information about the Joseph Thompson who died in 1855 in Kentucky. George Thompson, b. 1742, and Elisabeth Unknown, had a son, Joseph, b. 1778. It could be Joseph went to Kentucky with his uncle, Archibald Thompson, or other relatives, and died there. <[email protected]> wrote June 30, 2000 Subject: Re: [VAMONTGO] ANDREW THOMPSON, S/O ELSWICK THOMPSON AND PATTY AKERS - HARRIET SIMPKINS > Andrew is not the son of Elswick Thompson. He is the son of the Archibald Thompson who married Nancy Langdon. This Archibald is the son of George Thompson. George is the brother of Archibald Thompson who left a diary. First, because I don't want to get in trouble with Cary, please note that she states she has not tried to prove or disprove the Andrew Thompson - Harriett Simpkins line that is in the Elder John Lawrence book by Ora Belle McCollom. This record has Andrew b. 1801. I did not catch the error, so will try and get the facts Vicki and others have collected and post in an effort to correct this mistake. > No one seems to believe me on this. Would someone please check out > Montgomery Co. VA Deed Book K, page 565 for the deed between Andrew Thompson and Harriet, his wife and William Akers. This deed clearly states that > Andrew is a rightful legatee in lands belonging to the estate of his father, > Archibald Thompson, decd. The transcript of the deed Vicki references is as follows: "I found a Montgomery Co. VA Deed stating "This indenture made this 4th day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty, between Andrew Thompson and Harriet his wife of Montgomery County and state of Virginia of the one part and William Akers of said county and state of the other part, witnessed, that whereas the said Andrew Thompson having become the rightful owner of these ??????? claims to the lands heretofore belonging to the estate of his father Archabald Thompson, dec'd ........... ." The land he was selling was on Mill Creek, a fork of Meadow Creek, waters of Little River. Neighbors were Michael Peterman, Daniel Peterman, James Akers and others. Apparently, Andrew is the son of Archibald who married Nancy Langdon 22 Sept.1795 in Montgomery Co. VA. Archabald died before Nov. 1809 when his estate was appraised. I also have a Cynthia Thompson listed as his daughter. She married Allen Crandall 11 Oct. 1824. Cynthia was listed as the dau. of Archibald Thompson, decd. on the marriage record." Based on a research paper by Akers-Thompson researchers in Southwest Virginia, Elswick Thompson, b. 1764, and Patty Akers, b. 1766, had twelve children. The Clan Thompson spent many months attempting to document the children not recorded in the Archibald Thompson Diary (Lewis, Blackburn, Henry and Harmon's births are recorded in the diary); Elizabeth, Mary, Archibald, Claiborne and Joshua were proved by marriage records and deeds. Three children listed, William, Elisha and Andrew, were problematic but subsequent research has linked William as a son, and if there were an Andrew, he isn't the one who married Harriett Simpkins. To my knowledge, there has been no tie for Elisha to Elswick and Patty. I don't know what documentation McCollom has to tie Andrew Thompson to Elswick Thompson and Patty Akers. If anyone has the book, I would appreciate a check to see if there's a source cited. > In a message dated 6/29/00 11:06:50 AM, [email protected] writes: Cary Lynn Hall, a Thompson-Simpkins researcher has sent the following in response to Suzie's post of June 20: (Note: Elswick Thompson, b. 1764, was s/o Archibald Thompson and Mary Elswick; Patty Akers was d/o Blackburn Akers and Unknown Blackburn. Doug Thompson wrote June 25, 2000 In Reply to: JOSEPH W. HOWE IN JOHN ELSWICK 1756 WILL by Jemima Gee Morse of 1828 "Joseph Howe was a neighbor to John Elswick and is mentioned on several records as early as 1749 in what is today Hardy co. WV. A good history of this relationship is published in "Listen to the Mockingbird" by Daniel Dunbar Howe. Joseph Howe moved to Pulaski co. VA in 1769 and is buried there. The book is available through library loan in several places." Doug, Thanks! I did an archive search of WVHARDY and VAPULASKI, found nothing; however, I did find the Mary Anne Murphy Stone <[email protected]> post at WorldConnect <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GE T&db=zadock&id=I2135> and she has an extensive annotated history of Joseph Howe. I also learned from Sharon Barzhoff that George Washington's papers are now on line at the Library of Congress site <http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gwhtml/gwhome.html> George Washington surveyed the John Elswick land in Hampshire Co., VA, in 1748, evidently as an apprentice to the Lord Fairfax surveyors. I have the copy of his Elswick survey and Joseph How (Howe)'s name is on it. Thanks, Jemima Gee Morse
I recently ordered a copy of the 1776 will of John Elswick, my 6th g-grandfather, from Hampshire Co., WV, Romney, WV. I had also asked for a copy of any estate settlements, and the clerk wrote that these had been sent to Charleston for filming and would be available to order after July 1, 2000 from: WV Division of Culture and History, Archives & History Section, The Cultural Center, 1900 Kanawha Blvd, East, Charleston, WV 25305-0300. She enclosed a partial list of documents pre-1800 that would be available. I am pasting the list below. The land willed by John I, who died bef 1759, was surveyed by George Washington, and was one of the first fifteen deeds in the area of Hampshire Co., which I've been told is now Hardy Co., WV. My 5th g-grandfather, John Elswick II, died abt 1748, and his estate settlement was in Augusta Co., VA, in 1749. His widow, Lydia Unknown Elswick (m. second Jacob Lorton) was in Montgomery Co., VA.abt 1749. I am interested in reaching anyone who may have ancestors who lived in these areas of Virginia and West Virginia pre 1800. I would especially like to learn the maiden surnmes of my grandmothers, Rachel and Lydia. Wish I could connect to Mary Ferrell, but the time frame is too recent. Thanks for the link! I'll enjoy looking. You never know what you might find! Diana
The photo of Patton Martin's Children can be found on USGENWEB Tazewell page at this address: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vatazewe/ Scroll down toward the bottom of the page and find on the left side of the page Photographs of Places, click on Photos on Line at The Library of Virginia. Type Patton Martin on the search line and go. Click on the thumbnail photo for the photo. Click on the number on to view the description of the photo. There are some related photos. This is a wonderful source of photos of the area. Be creative on your search subject and type in any word or name you can think of to increase your chance of good finds. Amy Armstrong has done a wonderful job and deserves to be applauded in the management of this site. It is loaded with information and extremely simple to navigate. It is definitely one of the best on the Internet. The photo description does not include the date taken. The photos I have of Sarah Jane were taken about 1926 and they appear to be close to the same age. I am assuming that the Mary Ferrell pictured was Patton Martin's daughter and was married to a Ferrell. I have not done any research on the Ferrell name yet. I did see her name listed on one of the Cemetery lists on this page. There are a couple of photos of Patton Martin's old cabin also included. To be able to see the homes of our ancestors is a most rewarding experience. It places exactly where they lived at a particular time and a peep into what their life may have been like. The LVA I hope that this information helps and please let me know how you do and if this proves to be your line.

Hi Robert and List, What is the time frame for this picture? I have a Mary Ferrell in my family who was married in Russell County. I'd love to have the link to the picture. Diana
The photo of Patton MARTIN's Children found on the Tazewell Library of Virginia Collection linked on the Tazewell Web Page has Jane DRIVER pictured. I have two other photos of my great grandmother Sarah Jane Martin Driver that is proof that this is in fact one and the same person. This is really a break through for me and I would appreciate any information on this family. The photo also had a Mary FERRELLL and I would also like to have some info on her. The caption on the photo is not as descriptive as I would have like it to have been. I guess they all lived in the Paint Lick area of the County and near Sinking Waters. This is also the same area for my CRABTREE and HARRIS families. What little information I have in the way of a Russell County Marriage Register listing Sarah Jane and Phillip DRIVER marriage in 1876 and a 1860 Russell County Census listing and a couple of births for Patton MARTIN and family. The information as listed is somewhat confusing and conflicting and I really need to get it in order. I live in California but have a cousin that is doing hands on research in Tazewell and the local areas. Boundary changes during the 1850's/60's add to the confusion. And it is not known how much they moved about in those days. Robert Crabtree (formerly of Boissevain and Richlands)
