Dear Surry Listers, I would like to make a suggestion to members of the Surry list. When you respond to a post to the list, it is hardly ever necessary to repeat the entire post that you are responding to. All those repetitions are stored at the RootsWeb archives and makes it difficult and very time consuming for researchers who later go back and scan through the list archive for particular information or issues. Sufficient repetitions of the same e-mail is sometimes enough to make even a diligent researcher throw up his or her hands and quit. Some Internet Service Providers have default settings that automatically repeats the e-mail or post to which you are responding. These settings can be easily changed. If you do not know how, look at the Help section on your providers main page, or call the help desk on the telephone or just grab a teenager to help you. After resetting you can just cut and paste anything that is essential from the post to which you are replying. Often the caption or title of your post is sufficient to inform everyone of the topic you want to address. Other times a short segment of the original post will be necessary. Sometimes more than one segment separated by ". . ." may be appropriate. In any case keeping quotations to the minimum necessary for understanding your response is helpful to everyone and makes it more likely that your idea will get across. This will also be helpful to those who subscribe to several lists for their original reading of the posts to the Surry list, not just archive researchers. If there are long repetitioins, sometimes folks are tempted to just not read beyond the first post when they are in the digest mode -- defeating the purpose of any person replying or posting an original query whose post happens to be second, third or fourth. The issue is just compounded when one is searching through the archives. Thanks, Cleve
