VAGenWeb web site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~vasurry/ The How To Find Your Family page has some specific references. Particularly useful is the Index to Virginia Wills and Administrations online at the Library of Virginia. It can help you locate a will or administration for your subject. Also the online land patents and grants can be useful, even after the seventeenth century, in tracing the wanderings of your ancestors. Good hunting! -- Eve S. Hi, listers, I just joined and am hoping someone can help me with a major brick wall. I found a Hamilton JONES listed in Index book 10, Surry Co. Deeds, 1769-1778. He purchased property from Thomas Griffis. On the 1782 census for Surry Co., Heads of Household, the estate of Hamilton Jones is listed, so I'm assuming he died during the previous year. The estate is listed with 5 Whites and 18 Blacks. Does anyone have any information on this man? I'm grasping at straws here, because in 1834, Shelby Co., KY, a Peter JONES (b. VA) married Anna W. CINNAMOND. They had several sons, one of whom was my g-grandfather, Daniel W. JONES. They also had one named Jesse H. JONES. Daniel W. JONES married Mollie JENKINS in 1866 in Jefferson Co., KY. They named their first son Jesse Hamilton JONES (my grandfather). I'm figuring the Hamilton had to be a family name. Does anyone have any information on this JONES family? All help greatly appreciated. Patricia Jones Settle __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com
Anybody looking for a missing child of Elizabeth Fleming of Edgecombe county, NC, that child born about 1783? If so, I have information in addition to the fact that the child's father was Drury Drake, Sr. (1767-184?). Also, I have some wonderful handwritten letters to share with descendants, those written to Dr. William Kitchen Drake by Thomas B. Worrell who lived in Southampton county from his birth in about 1802 until his death no long after 1873. Paul

Hello All, I came across a couple of most interesting will abstracts from Surry Co, VA Abstracts from Surry Co, Virginia, Wills, Estate Accounts and Inventories 1730-1800 by Lyndon H. Hart III will book 10 page 323 Benjamin Cocke of Southwark Parish, Surry. Will Date 13 Mar 1763. Rec: 17 May 1763. Mr. Hartwell Cocke and Mr. William ACRIL, Executors. Do these Cocke's or Acrill fit into anyone out there's family lines? If so, do you know anything about William Acrill? Thanks so much, Audrey Fetterhoff

Murphys & other in "Wills and Administrations of Surry County, Virginia, 1671-1750" by Eliza Timberlake Davis, 1980 For you Simon enthusiasts/descendents, one entry here is listed as Lemon Murfrey. I've seen Simon's name several time and initially mistook it for Lemon due to the funny "S" written by the clerk. Anyway, this places Simon in Surry Co. in 1720, the earliest date I have for him yet. What are the chances that a 20 year old (if he was born 1700 like many say) would have charge of a plantation at that age? When did he come to Surry and where did he come from? Questions I ponder daily in my quest. -- Mark A. Murphy
